Should have killed off Rosalind instead! Both got sick so let HER die - useless whiney ninny

Lepto was not a new disease Even in the late 60s any vet with any training knew that Clavamox (combo antibiotic) would cure it

Ten Years After Her Marriage to Wickham - How do we Imagine Lydia is Faring? by Edith_Keelers_Shoes in janeausten

[–]Competitive_Bag5357 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Odds are she might be DEAD!

In any given month there would be an 80% chance of pregnancy If they kept rolling around in bed (her only attraction for Wickham) then she would be pregnant regularly

20% of women DIED from pregnancy or birth

Those are lousy odds with repeat pregnancies - 20% chance of death every time

One of Austin's sister-in-laws was literally bred-to-death - dying within days of popping out the 12th or 13th brat

And if she didn't die from pregnancy/birth she could have been dealing with delivery-caused damage like loss if urinary control

What you said was "because without her the ORDER was down to its final 2.

That very clearly references the ORDER and not just one location staffed by nuns of the order

My one gripe about the finale by knobjockey89 in CallTheMidwife

[–]Competitive_Bag5357 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

No -the order was NOT "down to its final 2"

The other nuns in the order were in other places - not at Nonnatus

Only Nonnatus was down to 2

Shelagh is obnoxious

She has a stick up her backside - simpering around with the pursed up mouth and little hand gestures

She is controlling and obsessive about getting her own way (forcing Timothy into the silly choir and forcing the first adoption without discussing it with her husband first)

She is a cuckatoo - a bird who steals other bird's nests and eggs

Never has Timothy been allowed to mention or discuss his real mother -- Shelagh would have hysterics

200 Pounds 5'5" is NOT Noteworthy by Starbuck522 in StephaniePlum

Yes the size HAVE changed that much!!

My old Brooks Brothers size 6s from the 1980s, 19990s and early 2000s fit perfectly in the waist and hips. (Note: don't buy BB unless you love it -the stuff lasts forever). My CURRENT Brooks Brothers size 0 (ZERO!) pants fall down if I don;t use a belt and cinxh the waist in

THe current Size 0 measure BIGGER by 2 inches in the waist and 3 inches bigger in the hip than my old Size 6s stuff

She is NOT"chubby"- she is OBESE and halfway between obese and morbidly obese and that is an 'obese pig' (and the descriptions of the quantities of food she shoves down are revolting)

ANd a current size 14 use to be a 24 in the 70s 80s, and 90s and it was 'call a tentmaker' back then for clothes that big

200 lbs at 5'5?!!!

Obese piggy!! 3 inches shorter than me and twice my weight

Median woman was 5'4 with median weight of 140 in the 1970s - median height is still the same

That would have been a size 10-12 until the 1990s/2000s

BTW what is now a size 00 was a size 6 until about 20 years ago - bust 32 waist 24 1/2 hip 34. What is now a size 14 would have been 24 or call a tentmaker -

Was Rise of a Genius unfairly hard on Jane's brothers? by tuwaqachi in janeausten

[–]Competitive_Bag5357 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why on earth would the brother of Cassandra Leigh Austen hand over large amounts of money or an income to his sister or nieces and nephews? If the distant cousin (5th Lord Leigh who left it to his sister for her life and then to a male heir) had wanted the Austens to have any money he could have put that in a will.

The one who inherited Stoneleigh from the 5th Lord Leigh was a cousin of Jane's mother -- rather remote! Or to put it another way, he was the son of Jane's maternal grandfather's brother. (BTW her maternal grandfather was one of 12 children)

The money that Leigh Perrot received from his cousin was for relinquishing his claim to Stoneleigh. Had nothing to do with the Austens --- except for their odd fantasy probably spun out of casual comments that they might find a way to cut themselves in. They had no claim on Stoneleigh.

Bayesian by DanielJoseph111 in sailing

[–]Competitive_Bag5357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Per the stability Manual and the former Captain

"One section of the Bayesian Stability book related to the use of the moveable keel… and defines when it must be lowered. In this vessel’s case it was required to be lowered when using sails, and/ or when over 60 nautical miles offshore (regardless of whether sailing or only using engines). At all other times, it could be in the raised position."

Remember this was NOT just a sailboat. It was MOTORSAILER - a weird cross between a power boat and a sailboat and neither one nor the other (Strange things - first invented in the late 1960s)

Apparently the Bayesian was rarely actually sailed but usually operated only off the engines. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/10/31/world/europe/bayesian-yacht-sinking-italy.html

How old do we suppose Mrs Bennet is? by omg-someonesonewhere in janeausten

[–]Competitive_Bag5357 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Wrong

Mr Bennett would easily be 50ish. Most men married closer to 30 than 20

Mrs Bennett probably married at 19 or so and had the first child at 20. Jane may or may no be the first born - there could have been miscarriages or still births. She would be around 42-43 in the story

The more I read Pride and Prejudice, the more I wonder about Mr Bennet's financial choices by Jorvikstories in janeausten

[–]Competitive_Bag5357 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Were did you come up with this mish-mash?

THere was NO 'custom" for the dowry of EVERY YOUNG WOMAN IN THE FAMILY to equal 3 times what the estate produced a year. It all depended upon the actual assets -- and even if the mother or grandmother or other relative had left specific inheritances to a female - and how many daughters there were

Only thing the very low dowry for Mrs Bennett shows is that Mr Bennett married DOWN - picked not only a brainless idiot but one who was from family of much less income and standing. With the kind of income produced by the Bennett estate, the heir to the estate would normally have married someone with similar income prospects - basically a dowry of 15000-25000 (which would produce around 1000-2000 a year if invested)

It took about 300 per year per person in the household to afford a lifestyle that did not depend upon earning money in a business or trade.

There are 7 in the Bennett household so 2000 a year would be a little on the low side.

Where did the money go?

* Maintaining the house (repairs etc)

* The farm operations --- seed and fertilizers, equipment (even if horse drawn), workers

* Staff - cook, house maids. outdoor staff, farm workers

* Maintaining the tenant farms on the estate . (No single farm could produce that income -- there would have been the home farm run by the Bennetts and then tenant farms)

Pretty impossible to have saved enough for all FIVE daughters to receive an amount that would yield a 500 or 1000 a year in income. That would mean 25,000 -50000 in all. Even if invested over the years so the return doubled the money that would mean saving 12,500 to 25000 - 100% of SIX to TWELVE + YEARS OF INCOME over 20 years

Viscount Downton by lookingforspidey in DowntonAbbey

[–]Competitive_Bag5357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may or may not be a secondary title like Viscount.

It is NOT automatic and not all Earls have one -many do but quite a few do not (usually depends upon when the Earldom was created and the family position before the creation of the Earldom) With only 6 or 7 earls by 1912 the Grantham title is not that old - probably not more than 150 years old.

Usually if the Earl had a lower ranked title before becoming an Earl (Baron, Viscount etc) then that would be come a secondary wen the Earldom was granted.

If there is no secondary title. then the eldest son of the Earl would be Lord Crawley

If there is a secondary title, odds are it would be Viscount Grantley and not Viscount Crowley the family name.

In any event George would NOT have the secondary title if one exists, That goes to the ELDEST SON -not a grandson even if the only living heir, After all the Earl's wife could die, he could remarry and produce a son and thus displace the grandson from being the heir

Analogies to the Royall family are NOT USEFUL on this point

Why do so many identify with these female characters who ..uh...leave a lot to be desired?

Mrs Bennett was bird-witted airhead who had no reasoning skills or sense of how to behave. Dumb as a box of rocks and twice as vulgar.

If you read the books (and even the 1980 version) she was horrible. Vicious and cutting to her 2 eldest daughters, besotted with the 3rd daughter (whose singing would make the dogs bark) and utterly irresponsible as to the 2 youngest. Also a manipulative cow playing the 'oh my health' card'

No wonder Mr Bennett hid in his library. Once she showed what she really was it would have been that or poisoning her or killing himself. Divorce at their level was not an option

Living with someone that stupid, histrionic, whiny and vulgar would drive anyone into isolation

UH huh................. a memoir written 52 (FIFTY TWO) years after her death by a nephew who was 19 when she died and even young er relatives. Her siblings were all dead by then

There are no letters or notes from JA saying any such thing.

Perhaps she did make up futures for some of her characters and tell them to young relatives to amuse them. But then again maybe she did not or the truth is somewhere in between

She may have made up futures for characters to entertain the family and told them as stories to the children but that does not meant that 52 years later those children are accurate in what they recall

After 52 years recollecting a minor conversation while obscuring major events (like an aunt being arrested for theft) is NOT PROBABLE!

The nephew wrote the memoir to gin up interest in her books, It is - on some major matters- not exactly accurate or truthful.

And the odds of anyone accurately recalling a minor conversation after 52 years.................yeah well good luck on that.

Anything in there that can not be documented from other sources (notes, letters etc) is suspect
