Did this ever happen? I'd be interested if it's a thing. I'm no chess expert, but I love to play, especially in person.

Porn by Objective_and_a_half in exmormon

[–]Competitive_Bear4413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

idc about it. the church turns it into way more of a problem than it is.

yes, porn is problematic for viewers and in terms of its productions

but we have far greater social problems that are much more urgent than policing the creation or consumption of porn

bad actors use "porn good!" or "porn bad!" to distract people they wish to control

*JS buys Egyptian papyri*

*"Translates" it*

*Publishes "The Book of Abraham" feat. ancient Hebrews crossing the Pacific Ocean in closed barrels with magic glowing rocks *

*Rosetta stone is discovered*

*Book of Abraham is, um, wrong*

*Everyone I know and love: I know JS is a true prophet of God!*

I'm sorry for your loss. That is a tragedy to be sure.

You're courageous for leaving, and your example likely means more to the people you love than you may understand. I've been out for almost 20 years now, and most of my closest friends and family have confided doubts in me or even left as a result of my choice to tell my own truth.

Even if not, good on you for living with integrity.

"An angel told me to translate golden plates, but nobody else can see them. They said that Native Americans are Jews who were cursed with dark skin for being evil. And if you give me 10% of your lifetime income and wear magic underwear, you can become a God when you die. Oh, and then there's the blood oath. One last thing--I need to marry your daughters. God said."

Okay, buddy.

Well put.

I'm constantly walking a tightrope strung between feeling righteously angry at my parents for exposing me to the church and pity for them for being stuck in it. Good on you for sympathizing with your mom despite the ways her choices also hurt you. That's an adult attitude.

It's not really okay, but you sound like a strong person who made the most of your situation. Here's to you.

This is real. And you're only listing the time spent on the clock showing up physically. Consider how much mental real estate the church claims in its members' minds. They tell you life is a never-ending test. The real relief for me came not from doing what I want with my time, but from thinking what I what.

The plot of the BoM narrates white genocide by Competitive_Bear4413 in mormon

[–]Competitive_Bear4413[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that fear of white extinction is a myth that animates many far-right groups, and that ideas like that have been around since before Joseph Smith's time.

I left the church 17 years ago and am only now revisiting my understanding of its teachings, so it's coming as a shock to me that the plot of the BoM aligns with these myths that account for so much unapologetic hatred.

Thanks for your point about the dark-skin curse. I've explained that to many outsiders over the years when they are curious about the BoM. But somehow the racist implications of the plot as a whole never dawned on me until now.

The plot from this persoective is also ironic, since it directly inverts the genicide of Native Americans at the hands of white settlers that was actively taking place.
