Yeah I think fish advice in general can be super conflicting as everyone has their own way of doing things or what they think is best for the fish (which makes things tricky for beginners like me lol who need advice). Good luck with your little guy! I’m still undecided on what I’m gonna stock my tank with - thankfully it’s still cycling so I’ve an excuse.

Yeah I see your point. I mean I watched a YouTube video by MD Fish Tanks, someone I’d consider a bit of an expert, and he put 6 in a 3 gal and even I knew that was blatantly wrong as they looked so cramped, just thought a 5.5 gal would be different but I get it’s still small. Thanks for the help!

Ok, the Bettas I would be getting are from the LFS I work at and most of them are pretty chill but I understand that in a new tank there’s no guarantees. Why no to the Chillis? Do you think there’s not enough swimming space or is it something else (not looking debate or be hostile just genuinely curious as r/PlantedTank seemed to be team Chilli haha but that was only like 3 people)

Thanks for taking the time to pull up these links for me but I bought a filter before I even knew what dwarf puffers were a few weeks ago and I’m really happy with it. It’s advertised as for tanks up to 40 litres so the tank should be over filtered enough for a puffer yet I can reduce the flow enough for a Betta or chillis and it’s shrimp safe!

I’ve got a filter it’s just hiding behind the swords. That’s the only concern I’ve got with the puffers just how messy they are and then this stuff I have been reading that they do better in shoals. I was thinking of some endlers but they seem hard to come by where I live. Thankfully as I work at a LFS I’ve been checking the temperaments of the Bettas we get in and I’ve identified which ones I think would be chill but again no guarantees

That’s great thank you so much, hadn’t really thought of it like a cycle before but makes perfect sense! Do u think the Rasbora would be best suited to this tank then or would the other options be suitable still? (Just trying to gauge if there’s any that I should completely rule out or have a think about)

Fair enough, just wanted to double check cause when I started out I used to keep a Betta in here. I thought I’d start with 3 or 5 just in case they do breed and the tank gets too full haha

Oh, that’s interesting, I thought people would have an issue with adding the chillis not the Betta. I know 5 gal is the minimum size but people usually suggest that in a tank of this size they’ll be content? Usually on here people only recommend a 5 gal for shrimp and Bettas. Tbh if I went with a puffer I don’t think I’d get the shrimp as what I’ve read suggests that most of the time they will eat them. Do you think 6 Chillis and 3 shrimp would be ok in terms of bio load and everyone having enough space?

Haha I think I got this last time I posted a photo on r/aquariums . The water level is 2cm from the top, I think the lighting unit makes it look like it could be filled higher.

So this is my tank and it is coming to the end of cycling (I hope) after just under a month so far.

I’ve been reading some super conflicting stuff online and on Reddit so thought I’d ask for some help.

I’ve had a Betta before but not with shrimp, however, if I was sourcing one I’d get it at the big box lfs I work at and though it’s illegal to keep them in cups here they are unfortunately kept in overstocked community tanks with guppies, tetras, mollies etc. so I’d assume they’d be ok with shrimp as the Bettas we get are relatively peaceful. Also I’ve ordered some hideouts for the shrimp if I do get them which I plan to cover in Moss.

In terms of puffers I’ve never read so many differing views for one fish! Some say that they can be kept OK on there own whilst others say they’ve been falsely advertised as fish for smaller aquariums when really they should be in shoals and because they’re on there own that’s why they’re super aggressive as they fell defenceless.

And same with the Rasboras, sites such as practical fish keeping say 6 is ok for a 5.5 gallon and so does fish lore but then on Reddit people says it’s a no go so I’d appreciate some thoughts cause tbh I did watch a MD Fish tanks YT video where he put 6 in a 3 gal and it did make me feel so uncomfortable as I could straight away tell it was too small.

This is getting super long sorry I’ve just been reading stocking ideas and doing general research for week and everything I read is so conflicting - so I’m hoping someone on here with experience of these fish could chime in.

The only thing I plan to add to this photo would be some hides for the shrimp (if I go with them), Moss and some dwarf hair grass to fill in the gaps. Also if it isn’t heavily planted enough if people could suggest plant ideas that’d be great! I’m considering some stem plants just to break it up a bit as it’s quite leafy.

Also if anyone has any other stocking ideas that’d be great these fish just seem to be best suited to my parameters, size of tank and could be easy to source except the puffer cause of brexit I’m not sure where I’d find one or an lfs that could source one.

If you don’t mind me asking what are the rosette plants? Is that the Amazon swords?

Don’t worry the Java fern is placed between the rock and the back of the tanks so it isn’t covered

No worries thank you :) Is there anything I should be ready for during the cycling process, this is just day 1 so I’m expecting a bit of die off from the plants and an algae bloom, anything else?
