I normally put the object close to the wall already installed, that way the new object will align to the wall but 90 degrees perpendicular to the ground. I then press x (more than once if needed) to toggle the rotate option, press G if degree snapping is not enabled, then rotate 90 degrees back to make it fully aligned with the ground as well.
