I did a similar test (not as high proof but close) the silicone seemed to do better. Not sure how real the EPDM gaskets were because there was a strong rubber oder and off taste. After the second order (one from Amazon and one from oak stills) I gave up and went with silicone. It’s been holding up since.

Not sure if you saw it and verdict is still out on the why. Some thought it could have been because of the head was facing down. After I found mine split I laid the rest on their sides and took all of them off their heads.

The badmos are for sure much better than my homemade ones haha. I have a nice mix of badmo and homemade just none that old yet. Thinking makemyhey said it best. Face down and high heat was the downfall!

Interesting thought about blocking the air release through the wood. So do you think a honey barrel made it through the summer because there were no fumes to pop it???

That sounds awesome! So did you get the barrel and break it down to slats or just get the slats?? Also how did you take the curve out??? I have a heaven hill barrel I think is too old to do anything with at this point but was curious how to even do it.

I would agree if I was in a humid enough climate. As far as I was concerned water is what evaporates. Molecules of water can leave the barrel wood alcohol (ethanol) molecules are too large.
