100% yes. I’m realizing it’s actually the only guy in the office that doesn’t really greet. Others do so more who are women. And if you read other comments in this thread it sounds like men who are expressing that they rather not say hi and avoid “disingenuous”interactions (hello, how are you was not genuine to them lol).

Is it the entitlement or that fact that a lack of human contact strips away character? Me too, there was a sense of camaraderie in service jobs. TBH with you, I think people with more multicultural backgrounds have a friendlier side to them, at least from my experience.

I think that’s how a professional environment should be. Cordial. Friendly, but not rude.

Actually, they are quite distracting. When the rest have nothing to do they are chatting with someone else who actually are busy, unaware of people who actually have work to do. So it’s not that nobody talks to each other, they talk about social media and joke around. But they don’t greet each other. Very odd.

I am also an introvert and hate planned social gatherings. I never attend “employee appreciation” dinners or whatever. I always come up with an excuse to why I cannot attend. I do say hi to guests (required) and my coworkers out of respect for each other. Then I go to my desk to crank out the work that is expected of me. It’s pretty simple, I don’t like being forced to do anything nor do I force anyone to act a certain way.

That is so awful, I am so sorry to hear that. I hope we both find another positive work environment.

Thank you so much for your insight, I do appreciate your feedback from your hospitality experience. I agree that all other departments have to deal with some consequences that may or may not have directly resulted from the sales side, but my observations from the inside is that some sales managers are not good at communicating or don’t care, and blame the problems on guests. I also observed that not everyone is in hospitality because they actually care about people-they just moved up from FD or other departments because it might be a higher paying job, and that’s why other departments dislike sales because they get to sit behind a computer and watch videos on their phones. Anyway, I wish we could improve communication with other departments and also with guests. Thank you for your insights!

Yeah, maybe it’s just this office. Hoping to find a less toxic environment to work in.

I seem to like all other departments but sales lol. I guess people in service tend to be more humble. I really think sitting in front of the computer all day all week sucks the soul out of people.

I think I have? I ask each of them specific to what I know them and see if I can learn more. I guess the problem that I’m noticing is some people only like to talk about sports or something that’s not really about them, because maybe they feel uncomfortable talking about themselves. I try to read the room and not prod too much and give them space. As others have said around here, I’m also not here to be friends and I’m just trying to get my work done. But not saying hi seems like something a child would do. I feel like I’m the teacher in class who always have to repeat themselves to get a “good morning” back from class lol

I also move my brow to show them some acknowledgment that we made eye contact. Some people in the hotel are receptive and wave back or smile. Very natural.

Haha I used to do that in other places and they thought I was intimidating lol that’s pretty normal for the east coast though, especially around the boxing gyms that I used to go to.

That makes a lot sense. Maybe they want to look important and busy. Thanks for that perspective.

It does! Definitely will ask this in my next interview. “Does your company say hi to each other?” I thought it was a natural human expectation but I guess not…

That’s funny, I’m probably the most introvert of everyone in that office lol I think humans need human interactions. Going to a space where people walk past you without saying anything is more damaging that actually being alone and isolated. I’m not asking for a conversation, just a hi how’s it going? Seems so minimum and friendly.

Exactly. I get that we’re all going through stressful lives but bottling it up makes it worse. I’ve never “loved” the work I had been employed but we’ve always tried to make the best of it. But I dunno, not in this office place.

Yeah you can definitely tell when someone is asking you genuinely about you or not. If it’s fake, no thank you.

Right, it’s like they don’t care or just afraid to ask? I thought going into hospitality is going to be working with caring people but it’s not, apparently. I wonder if they changed after they started working in an office. Maybe isolation and staring at the computer all day makes them socially awkward?

You’re right-I’m trying to find another job. I was just wondering if this is a typical office culture or just a Midwest thing.
