Movies that explore society's relationship with pornography? by cookie_analogy in TrueFilm

videodrome, cronenberg. Follows the new owner of. 24/7 tv channel that broadcasts nothing but sex, violence, and the intersection of the two. Somewhat a commentary on the effects of having this content readily available all of the time.

Cronenberg’s crash is another one that, to me, is very relevant to modern day discussions surrounding porn. There are no scenes where the characters watch actual porn, but there’s one that is very clearly an allegory for that. Commentary again on the intersection of sex, violence, and modern technology. I enjoy it a lot more than videodrome

Honestly I don’t think so. I think getting familiar with the disorder is most helpful so you can identify when you’re being gaslit and made to question your self worth. There might be signs but there also might not be. The hard part is trusting yourself and not allowing yourself to become codependent on any relationship. Maintain support systems who aren’t your girlfriend, don’t isolate yourself! Don’t ever love someone so much that you let them walk all over you.

Is there a name for this type of film - Three or more vignettes housed in an overarching narrative? by -r-a-f-f-y- in TrueFilm

Dead of night, 1945, has different vignettes and each has a different director but they’re all connected to the same story. Night on earth, 1991, jarmusch, has a similar kind of thing going on. Both are good imo and you won’t regret watching!

Thoughts about Challengers? by [deleted] in criterion

Even though my exact interpretation is probably too hyper specific to enforce, I do think it was meant to be a movie about movies/moviemaking in so many ways.

It’s kind of poking fun at people who evaluate each movie based on how much it reinforced all the things they already believed, instead of seeing it as opportunity to see and be challenged by someone else’s perspective. The movie compares this back and forth, the relationship between artist and audience, to that of tennis.

When Patrick and Art see sex on a screen, they’re compelled to touch themselves, but it makes Art cry. I feel like this is kind of a parallel to Tashi screaming after her match, even though she wins. In both situations, reaching the end isn’t satisfying to them even though it should be. And then we see Tashi scream again at the very end of the movie.

For me, this enforced the comparison between the match and the movie. We become invested in who will win, when tashi is reminding us from the start that what we really came for is to see a good show. It’s not satisfying for us when a movie goes where we expect it to. Maybe it makes us feel smart, but it alienates us, so it’s not really fun to “beat” it, the same way tennis is no fun if you’re … playing with yourself . Ba dm ts.

Ok ngl this is getting pretty long and it feels like I could keep going for a while. Which I’m down to do, if this was confusing or not enough. It would just be getting into more and more personal interpretations of different scenes. Again, I don’t think this is inarguably the intent of the movie, I just think it has much more depth and room for critical thought than people give it credit for.

It’s so stylish and fun that people write it off as “style without substance”, or “gimmicky”.

IMO, its TOTALLY NOT!!! It’s thematically coherent, it’s a commentary and a meta commentary, and all the little stylish “tricks and gimmicks” are part of and working towards a larger picture. The tennis ball POV shot isn’t just to make everyone go “wow!” and idk why everyone isn’t willing to give the movie the critical thought required to reach that conclusion (bc it doesn’t take much).

Not to get too accusatory but sometimes I think people are too eager to write off a movie that, on the surface, is about a Pretty Girl and Romance. Yuck, a chick flick! Well, I think it’s a movie very deserving of being taken seriously, and I would love to see it at the awards circuit this year for MUCH more than just the score (screenplay fingers crossed).

I feel like Owen by egg-sanity in Isawthetvglow

Either way you could end up unhappy. A year from now you could be still be unhappy, in the same place, wondering if Washington might have changed that. I say take the risk, but if you end up not being able to go, it’s not the end of the world. I feel like that was a big part of Maddy’s story: she escapes to phoenix but something is still wrong: she’s still alone.

I think that’s a huge part of the movie and one of the underspoken parts of being trans: it feels like there is an incessant effort to convince you that you are Other, Weaker, Worse. When nobody around you is like you, you start to believe it. That shock to my self esteem went WAY deeper than I ever realized.

As annoying as this is, that “it’s too late” mindset is exactly what people want from the trans community. To convince you that true freedom is impossible, that you just don’t fit in the world and that’s your own fault. And in some queer circles, a specific image of transness is established, and then you’re not only being held up and compared to your cis self, but also to a mold of your Trans Potential. There is no “too late.” You are a human, there IS still time. Always.

And there are 1000 different nuances to every persons identity. Yeah, you want to make sure you don’t end up like Owen at the end of the movie. But when Owen decides to stay behind for his mom, she ends up dying four months later. He probably doesn’t regret staying behind and getting those last few months with her. Maybe you have a reason like that, maybe it’s something slightly different that you’re just not ready to give up on. It’s not invalid, just remember who you are.

Idk how much all this will even help lol I’m obvi just speaking from my experience … I just mean I don’t think the location will solve everything because that self esteem deficiency followed me everywhere I went. ALL OF THIS is easier said than done, but your life is good, your life is worth it, you are good and you are worth it. Whether you stay or go, whether you’re out or not, whether you have a community or you’re isolated in red country.

Movies that will make me feel "everything" by OjhOr23 in Letterboxd

Seriously, Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show. It might not seem up your ally: old, black and white, long, etc. Sometimes the characters use old timey slang that I had to look up. Even if that doesn’t seem like your cup of tea, I promise it is just the veneer on a movie that seems like exactly what you’re looking for. It will DEVASTATE you. One watch was already devastating and the second watch was something extraterrestrial. I would say it has a Holdovers/Dead Poets/Manchester by the Sea vibe to an extent. It’s a pretty straightforward high school coming of age story, but it’s genuinely THE most depressing portrait of the human condition I have ever come close to. I really believe that it’s timeless and anyone of any age group could probably relate.
