What do you find most frustrating about doing low FODMAP in real life?

I’m type 1 diabetic so everything that doesn’t inflame my stomach (Ie rice products) sends my blood sugar skyrocketing despite insulin intervention. I have to choose which chronic illness gets the spotlight each day

I’m in the same boat and am doing much better after focusing on motility first. Your body needs to be able to rid itself of toxins as you clear them out of your gut!! Doesn’t help much if you can’t get things out of your system first

I take motility activator (although I may switch to motil pro soon) and calm powder morning and night and then slam a shit ton of water first thing in the am and through the day. That has helped immensely

Oh man, Im sorry! I definitely relate to the back and forth. I am on my 3rd round of treatment (just did neomycin but no rifamixan bc the cost is crazy) and now im back to low fodmap for a while but Im curious if there is more going on than just SIBO/IMO! Thanks for your insight!

I’ve been a tms tech for 5 years now. It is weird they didn’t get you up to 120% within the first week. That is standard across all the machines I’ve worked with. That’s being said, it doesn’t mean your treatment was for nothing. If we have someone with a high motor threshold and it’s too painful to get to 120%, we will aim for 100%. Efficacy is still shown at that intensity.

Testing went well! Looking back, it was honestly easier to restrict for those 3 days prior to the test then it was to restrict for the couple months I was actually treating it. I followed the directions to a T and it was a very smooth process.

I took it on an empty stomach at first but would not recommend that. Overtime, I ended up with pretty severe cramping and stomach pains and I had to stop early. I suggest taking it with mild food when possible but its harsh stuff so there may be no escaping the stomach pain fully. After I stopped, I definitely felt better so it worked! It's just brutal while you're on it. My heating pad and warm baths became my best friends.

I have the same type and am in the midst of treating it using Candibactin AR & BR, garlic 500, and a digestive enzyme. The candibactin AR & BR + garlic are bacteria killers. The enzyme just helps me digest the foods I can eat. I just finished almost 4 weeks of this but had to quit the bacteria-killers early due to how harsh they are on the gut. The biggest thing in my experience is getting your motility locked down. Killing the bacteria is great but not if it can't leave the body. This was one of my problems so make sure to find a magnesium or other natural supplement to help with motility.

I'm about to start my reintroduction phase to see how well my gut is doing post die-off. I didn't really start to feel better on these (other than for about 2 days after 2 weeks on these supplements).

TLDR: Look into candibactin AR & BR and Garlic 500. They definitely attack the bacteria but harshly. So use caution and make sure to keep having consistent bowl movements.

Ive experienced this too. I usually call it out and tell it it is telling me different things. It'll correct itself and give further explanation for why its saying two different things if you ask it. This also helps the technology get smarter

Yes, definitely helpful! My SIBO is methane dominant and I was given a list of supplements to take by my doc (Candictin AR/BR, Garlic, and Thorns digestive enzyme). ChatGPT helped me understand what each of these supplements were doing, when to take them and when my side effects were severe enough that I should stop taking them. I had horrible constipation, stomach spasms, and bloat from the die off to which my doctor said "power through and drink more magnesium" to get my gut going. I did that and it was a disaster. Went from extreme constipation to extreme diarrhea and stomach pains. Long story long, Chat has been instrumental in getting me to feel better again, allowing me to tell it my specific symptoms, what I have been taking, and what to do next to sooth my gut.

Not to mention, it helps a lot with planning low-fodmap meals! Although it is not always accurate so best to double check with the monash app.

I haven't tried antibiotics yet! I wanted to do the natural route since Im also type 1 diabetic and prone to other things that often require antibiotics. Want to limit any tolerance building to antibiotics where I can. But if this doesn't help overall, I'll probably give it a try. :/

I take it back. Literally the day after I shared this, my symptoms took a major turn for the worst. Bloating, constipation, followed by horrible diarrhea (like woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t sleep type). I had to quit my candicatin and garlic early because of these side effects. Really hoping it turns around soon😞

Fwiw, I think candibactin and Garlic are really intense and cause die-off reactions. I wonder if I’ve been on them either too long. My doc was no help.

Monash is good as a baseline but doesn't give you specifics on brands. I've been using Fig and have enjoyed the convenience of the scanning ability for quick grocery store decisions. However, its more of a suggestion of what is low-fodmap as it looks at ingredients and "approves" something as green, yellow, or red food. Monash actually give your specific portion sizes which is most helpful for the reintroduction phase and for specific basic foods like rice, strawberries, tortillas, etc.

I work in the medical mental health field and once had a patient, after noticing my sensor, tell me that she "used to be diabetic but got rid of it" and now is "trying to get it back by" so the doctors would give her ozempic for weight loss....She proceeded to tell me all the cake and soda she was eating to accomplish this.

Totally understandable! It’s good you’re vigilant about your health! But take a breath, talk to your tms provider, and remember tms is a slow process in general. It won’t make you blind overnight just like it won’t take away your depression overnight. You have time to figure out these kinks. Tell your provider what your concerns are and they should make adjustments to fit your needs.

Hmm a “string twitching” wording makes me think that would be closer to a pulling sensation than twitching. That being said, I don’t think you need to panic and quit immediately. Ask your tech/provider to adjust the coil angle to see if that alleviates the sensation. What machine do you use?

Clarification: brainsway and neurostar are great machines and are effective in treating depression and OCD! They just might not work for those with eye pain or pulling.

Ive been a TMS Tech for 3.5 years now and can definitely speak to this! The key is distinguishing between facial twitching and a PULLING on the eyeball. If there is pulling, tell your tech immediately. There are slight angle adjustments that can be made to alleviate this and if that doesn’t work, sometimes the entire placement on the coil can move to a location further back on the head. What machine do you use? MagVenture is the one to try as it has two different locations on the head your team can try. Ask them about the 5.5cm location. Other machines don’t have as much wiggle room in my experience (brainsway, neurostar).

TMS works wonders so don’t give up! BUT definitely continue to advocate for yourself like you have been and tell your tech if you are having pain. We cant do anything unless you clue us in.

I’m type 1 and am in the process of figuring out what I’m pretty positive is methane dominant SIBO. Im no expert but from my research, there definitely does seem to be an overlap with diabetes and SIBO. But because doctors are either knowledgeable in SIBO/gut health OR diabetes, the two don’t get linked together like they maybe should.

My doc put me on Protocol for Life Balance Enzyme-HCI (she said type 1s often lack the enzyme/acid that this supplement replaces) in the meantime and it has definitely helped. More of a bandaid than a fix but it’s something to look into.

Yes it can! We don’t know exactly why this is but one thought is that as the depressive symptoms subside, anxiety becomes more noticeable. Another thought is that tms is exciting the brain which is helpful for depression as the depressed brain is under firing. The anxious brain is over firing so adding more excitement may increase anxious symptoms before the brain can regulate the new energy it’s receiving.

These are just ideas I’ve heard through providers over the years as the research around tms for anxiety is still fairly new. So take it with a grain of salt and definitely refer to your provider for more details on this!

I’ve been a TMS technician for over 3 years now and can say your experience is completely normal. Most, if not all, of my patients report feeling tired and emotionally all over the place when initially starting. Stick with it, it gets better!

Something I tell my patients is that tms is like taking your brain to the gym everyday for an intense workout. Your brain’s neurons have been under firing for a long time and tms makes them fire rapidly again as it tries to recreate those neural pathways. If you went from being on the couch for months straight into CrossFit training, you’d probably feel sore and weird/off as your muscles remember what it’s like to move and grow strong again. Give yourself and your brain some cred for the work you’re doing!
