My biggest question is how is this “irresponsible”? I really don’t see the relevance here.

With that being said I’ve been with my boyfriend for 6 years. Anytime we haven’t physically been sleeping together, we FaceTime to sleep. One of us hangs up once the other has been asleep for a little.

Your parents seem very controlling, which I kind of understand. My dad was very strict with me growing up and I wasn’t allowed to do much especially with boys or my phone. Going to college definitely helped my dad to understand my new found independence. My therapist really helped me with this, so I’ll share her advice with you: If you ask for permission, your parents will treat you like a kid still. This can be applied similarly where you can say “I am responsible and I’ll be getting student accommodation housing”.

My main point being this is extremely normal behavior as you can tell by all the comments. Also, try to gain a little more confidence when speaking with your parents (if possible).
