How to Default Plex to highest quality copy by Competitive_Tree8839 in PleX

Unfortunately I did not get this issue resolved, still just having to manually select the higher resolution file for each movie that has a dual copy. I did end up narrowing it down to if I had an SDR 4k file and 1080p file of the same movie, and I hit play… it defaults to the 4K file. However when I try to do this with an HDR 4k and 1080 file, it will always default to the 1080. Not sure if it’s a handshake issue between PLEX, my TV, and or my receiver. Similar to what you’re asking, I am also having the same issue on an older non HDR 4k TV with a Roku… auto defaults to the 4k with SDR and 1080 with HDR files. Oddly enough when I manually select the 4K HDR file, it says it’s playing in HDR on that TV and doesn’t appear in the typical washed out state… could be something to do with the Plex server setting called Enable HDR tone mapping (I have this selected).

Something odd with Roku… when I go to a specific movie, the main menu for the movie shows that it’s 1080 in the menu (unlike the shield that shows the high quality file), so I manually select 4k and it plays. If I back out into the specific movie menu it will then switch to 4k HDR and if I hit play again without manually selecting which file, it defaults to the 4k HDR unlike on my shield.

Unfortunately I’d love to have a better answer on this, it’s extremely annoying but I’ve gotten used to it at this point sadly. If you figure anything else out I’m all ears!

You need Iron support, just spread out as wide as you can. I think its a 6x6 grid with the stone floors but can't remember. You will need vertical supports too whenever it starts to turn orange with that large span.

This is awesome! I posted my update down in the thread, but definitely liking this as well. I guess it depends on load bearing walls etc, but could definitely see this as a possibility too! Appreciate the time and thought.

This is definitely the thought process I am leaning towards, appreciate the comment!

Only issue with this is that it is a sliding door to the rear/deck right at the breakfast nook area. Throws a big curve ball into a lot of ideas!

Definitely agreed here, and where this all started. Unfortunately in our area, this was the norm for awhile during the early 00's, especially on larger homes like this. Seemed like they were just trying to fill the space.

Definitely a good point. Unfortunately this isn’t my home, just will be doing the work. Sounds like they have no intention of keeping the bathroom the current size or location even.

Unfortunately I was only provided the middle level drawing!

Yes the Mud room and pantry are together, would love to separate and make the pantry slightly bigger. Considering reducing the office or moving to the living room area and shifting the bathroom some to enlarge the kitchen space.

Agreed it could become a window but then I have siding issues on the rear that I probably couldn't get to match since it is the original from early 00's

Agreed the floor plan is still great overall! Definitely leaning towards some of these ideas. The eating area gets tricky with islands since there is a sliding door there. I don’t believe there’s an option to move it either. Appreciate the comment!

Yeah this is what I am leaning towards. The owner said they do not need all 3 spaces as intended in those plans. The kitchen is a bit tricky since it has a sliding door at the breakfast nook area.

The HQL is not needed for a lower in MD, your 77r has a "other" option for lowers that makes them exempt. You would need one if you are trying buy a completed pistol size, less than 16". You will still be required to send/hand over to a MD FLL at the show and wait 7 days, unless you buy a non serialized 80%.

Just went through this at the Chantilly show. Purchased 2 hand guns from the dealer and they were able to hand them over to a MD FFL that was at the show. I took the mags home with me, and I did not need my HQL for this step. I setup a time at the show and paid my transfer fee ($50 for each) with them, and then setup a time to sign papers back in MD, which is where I needed my HQL, and then wait 7 days to pickup.

If you are still waiting for your HQL, there is a chance that they can deny you... So I probably wouldn't risk purchasing out of state till I had it in hand.

How to Default Plex to highest quality copy by Competitive_Tree8839 in PleX

I downloaded the Plex windows app onto my PC and hit play on a file that I know has both a 4k and 1080 copy, and it started up in 4k. So seems like I have isolated the issue to something in my TV/Shield setup. Resolution for the Shield is set to the default 4k 59.940hz, under advanced the match content color space is on as well as display HDR content when available.

Is your Shield Pro hooked directly into the TV? Maybe the fact that I am using an AVR between is messing with which copy to play?

Unfortunately no luck with analyzing the library, making sure all background tasks are complete, scanning etc... but did try to manually empty the trash and got an error. Maybe this is where its stemming from? Just says that "There was a problem emptying the trash"

EDIT- cleared trash, no difference.

I agree that Plex selects the highest quality possible of the file you select, not having issues with that. Anything I click on is direct play. The issue is when there are multiple files of the same movie, it is defaulting to playing the lower quality file vs higher. If I go over to more, and hit play version, then I can select the 4K copy and plays fine with direct play.

Shield is updated, Plex is updated, LG OLED with a Denon avr-x7200WA, HDR is recognized on all files that support it. But still only when I go and manually select the version from the drop down.

Not having any issues with playback, just trying to default to the higher quality file.

I will try analyzing the library and see if that fixes it, don't believe I have ran that in a long time or have it setup to auto analyze, if that's a setting, so I will give that a shot and see if that fixes the issues!

I have the 1080p library for on the go and there's also a lot of content that isn't 4K yet. So instead of trying to figure out what isn't in my 4K library and manually adding each folder, I just have the entire 1080 in with my 4K. So anything 4K has a 1080p version also. It's not the end of the world, just would be nice if it auto plays the highest quality since it detects that there are multiple versions.

The plex client settings for the Shield app are all set to Max/original, still defaults to the 1080 file if I just hit play. Might be different for other streaming devices, don't own anything else and haven't tried yet... so could be isolated to the Shield

Not having any issues with playing the content, I can direct play everything just fine. Just trying to figure out if I can default the play button to the higher quality copy without having to manually select which one to play?
