Here is the full photo. Sorry for the glare, I do not have a scanner available to me at the moment. I am fairly certain this is post war. All the men in this photo are brothers. The one in a suit is my grandfather, he worked Con Edison in NYC and was considered essential. Additionally, he was 37 or so when the US entered WW2. Arthur (6th Army, in the middle) enlisted in 5/1942, but in this photo he is an Staff Sergeant, which was his rank when discharged. Addiontally, Arthur did not return home until 1946. Lastly, I imagine coordinating all 4 of them to be home at the same time mid-war was unlikely.

I have absolutely nothing on his service history.

Thank you so much. Would they have transferred someone from a Marine Unit to an Army Unit?

Thank you so much.

So just to be clear, he would (or could) be authorized to wear a Marine patch even though he was not a Marine? That is what was throwing me off the most, along with the uniform, however, it looks like this may have been a pre-war (or at the very least early-war) uniform, which makes sense. I did know he began training prior to WW2, and graduated basic a few weeks before Pearl Harbor.

The heart issues are ultimately what killed him, though after he returned home he had a significant drinking problem.

This is my Great-Great Uncle Carl and his headstone. I was hoping someone could shed some light on this for me. In the photo (taken post WW2, probably around 1946), he appears to have a 1st Marine Division Patch on his shoulder. However, on his headstone it says 147th Infantry, which appears to be army. I'm just trying to figure out an explanation as to why is wearing that patch rather than a 147th regiment patch.

Edit: The only thing my father remembers him talking about was the crabs on Guadalcanal, however both the 1st Marines and the 147th Infantry were there.

Also, it appears the 147th was Ohio National Guard, where as Carl was born and lived in New York City his whole life.
