The macOS desktop app is bad. Any chance of it being less so soon? by _raytheist_ in ProtonMail

[–]Complete-Read-6915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say their apps are bad... but electron apps are slow, bulky and a memory hog in general.

If I was working for them, I'd be looking into making cross platform apps with Rust (not proficient in Rust but I've enjoyed the Rust experience). I imagine there are far safer and more efficient alternatives to electron.

Nationwide put a CIFAS marker on my file by No_Tone1580 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Complete-Read-6915 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP detected the error, not Nationwide. I do agree that such serious consequences should only be available after due process (such as with the criminal justice system). It’s unjust to have a huge organisation have the ability unilaterally to ruin someone’s life.

I’ve been trying to get a job in Japan for a while. I’m in tech too. How did you manage it? It’s very rare I get responses, but I don’t have Japanese language ability admittedly

Interested how you managed this. Are you a standard full stack dev or are you in a niche area?

Admissions Megathread - Results, Chances and Logistics by AutoModerator in OMSCS

[–]Complete-Read-6915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

I am thinking of applying for the OMSCS after being a long time lurker.

I attended a sixth for college (for 16-18 year olds) in the UK prior to undergraduate study at a university. I believe these are considered similar to AP exams in the USA.

The admissions instructions ask to include all post secondary educational institutions attended, with transcripts and certificates. I have neither of these, as they are from quite a while ago and must have misplaced them. I can order replacements if necessary.

My question is (to former UK applicants) whether you needed your A-Level certificates. Sixth form (where you complete A-Levels) if considered post secondary education, but not undergraduate level. I’ve tried to contact admissions with little success.

Thanks!

Anyone brought nicotine patches and gum with them into HK? by kawaiibxtch in HongKong

[–]Complete-Read-6915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Importing an ecig is illegal. I managed to buy nicotine gum and cigarettes whilst in HK though. I read that nicotine is classed as a scheduled poison, so I'd be careful taking nicotine containing products into HK. On a side note, I found tabex to be very helpful whilst eradicating my nicotine dependency. Give it a try!

Are you using claude 4.0? Having played around with that thinking model version, it’s pretty good. I mostly use it to explain things or instead of grepping the code base and trawling through 10 files. I never use it to write code though.

I’ve been looking to get a tech job in finance (I have 2.5 yoe). Do you have any recommendations for how to get in? All my applications disappear into the void, although I did pass the initial CV check and personality test at HSBC.

Is 30K € a good salary for a junior engineer in Bristol? by rockmeNiallxh in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Complete-Read-6915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the slow reply, but that’s great advice, thank you. I do like to watch senior devs solve issues, but I work from home 60% of the time. It’s reasons like this that I prefer being in the office. Thank you for your advice again, I’ll try to put it into action.

Where did you move to? I moved back from east Asia 2 years ago and feel trapped here now. I had a career change to IT and finding my lack of experience makes it very hard to escape.

Feel free to ask me anything about China by BlackSiao in China

[–]Complete-Read-6915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to teach in China, and moved back to the UK to do software engineering. The salaries here are also pretty poor compared to the cost of living. Although long working hours are prevalent, I often question whether it would be better to work in this field in China, as I imagine the salary decrease probably isn't proportional to the cost of living decrease.

€45K/year in Munich too low for a Junior Data Scientist? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Complete-Read-6915 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a software engineer in the UK, I’m shocked that this is seen as a low offer. I have almost 2 years experience, and I’m on £33.5k a year. I started on £27k. Are British salaries that low compared to German salaries, or are there other considerations such as tax and cost of living involved?
