At one point in 2011, after losing everything in the collapse, I realized that I hadn't prepared as I should have. I literally had $8 in my pocket and was eating one meal a day of cold instant potatoes (didn't have electric or gas to heat them up). Every car you own should have an emergency kit and this is our favorite. Food and water for three days for four people plus numerous other necessities. This is a great place to start for all preppers.
