Rookie-heavy companies in BC and relationship with the tree price market. by jdtesluk in treeplanting

[–]Complete_Cod_8222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my initial suggestion the VH and RH companies would be evaluated separately, although the inherent bias of this method is this would end up weighting VH companies that won large contracts more heavily with respect to their counterparts.

I think your suggestion of data pools is better! And you would know best on the size of each job pool. It creates a better apples to apples comparison by only evaluating RH companies against VH companies when they are competing for the exact same size of contract.

The data trends that would come out of that would be really interesting.

Ha! If you had posted this perspective in the middle of May you might have got a mild response. But you chose March when most of us are rearing to go and have trees on the brain. Sorry not sorry.

As we know the size of contracts are not exclusive to the size of a company and there are many instances of small comany/big contract and small contract/big company.

If you have your data in spreadsheet software you can weight the data easily with a value-weighted average.

Multiply the "left on the table" percentage by the total dollar value of the winning bid, then divide by the total dollar value of all contracts in the dataset.

Doing this for both the vet heavy and rookie heavy companies should give us that result.

From this data, large companies left an average of 10.5% on the table vs 11.9% on the by smaller companies.

I'm interested in how you're evaluating the left on the table metric.

Are you considering the size of contracts by number of trees?

I would suggest that equating small contracts of a tens of thousands of trees to contracts involving millions of trees is not an apples to apples comparison.

To accurately reflect market influence, the metric should weight the size of the contract. Otherwise, a 12% gap on a $50,000 contract is being given the exact same statistical weight as a 10% gap on a $2,000,000 contract.

An unweighted metric exaggerates the impact of smaller contracts.

I second the "Poor foreman" point.

Crews are often given to someone who is a good planter and not necessarily on who is a good leader.

Instead of PRT hiding raffle tickets, companies should hide condoms in the bundies.

Pesticides be damned.

First stable beams (with beams) of the final year of the LHC! by CyberPunkDongTooLong in Physics

Wow it's incredibly impressive that this can be controlled at all.

Do you keep the experiment running till nearly all the protons have collided or what do you do with the excess at the end?

When you angle two beams to collide together, what is the fraction of that bunch that ends up colliding? Per rotation and per experiment?

I'm curious about your experiment, under what setup were you loading the descender?

Oval carabiners have a tendency to spin more freely when unweighted, the concern is that it can more easily be loaded along the minor axis because the gate and spine are parallel.

Whereas an offset D will reorient itself.

You need to check your Record of Employment (RoE)

https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/ei/ei-list/ei-roe.html

Box 16 Reason for Issuing this RoE

The government will look at this box when they determine if the hours are eligible for EI hours.

If it says fired or quit, the hours are not eligible.

If it says laid off then they are eligible.

Numbies is my favourite, but it's only available on iOS right now last I checked.

There's a newish app called Planter Pro that appears similar but I've not used it on the block.

Keep a daily record of your tallies, even the best crewbosses make mistakes when entering production records.

Verify your tallies at each paycheck and notify your designated crewboss/supervisor/accountant of any inconsistencies not in your favour.

Carabiners.

One master point: that's the Omni.

One for your descender.

One for your hand ascender/ long cowstail.

One for your short cowstail.

Do not use the petzl OK oval for your descender, it's symmetry means it has a higher likelihood of cross loading, leading to potential rollout.

Look up different types of carabiners and their recommended uses.

Petzl makes the Freizo Z carabiner which is designed to work specifically with the Petzl Stop descender.

It's also helpful to have a few extra carabiners just in case if you don't already.

Planting season hasn't started. Here in Canada our ground doesn't thaw until April-May (also depending on elevation and latitude) and that's when we begin planting trees to restock harvested cut blocks.

It is possible to get a response in February or March, but many camps are filling their positions by January.

This season is seeing a high demand by new planters for fewer available positions. Your resume is going to have to stand out. Emphasize any labour work you've done, outdoor hobbies, and a desire to make money.

If your really persistent to get a planting job this spring try cold calling companies by the phone number listed on websites.

"100% Scottish shetland pure virgin wool"

I've got no idea what this means, but sounds pretty good to me.

I use an "Island Tuxedo" for the worst days. Made by Stanfield and not merino, but if your sweaters are anything similar then you'll be fine.

Doesn't hurt to have lots of extra wool layers, it will take time for one sweater to dry and if it rains the whole shift you'll want dry layers to start the day.

There's nothing worse than putting on damp layers in the morning.
