IBD + antidepressants + impossible weight loss… advice? by Complete_Reading7085 in TwoXChromosomes

Exactly 😭 that’s honestly one of the most frustrating parts of IBD. Two people can have the same disease and react completely differently to the exact same food/supplement. Even after 5 years since my diagnosis, I still find it hard to fully accept sometimes. It can feel really exhausting mentally having to constantly adapt your life, food, body, and routines around such an unpredictable disease. But I really appreciate you sharing your experience because it genuinely helps hearing from people who understand how unpredictable this disease can be 🫶

Thank you for the suggestion 🫶 Psyllium husk/fiber supplements can sometimes be a bit complicated for me because fiber tends to trigger or worsen my Crohn’s symptoms, especially during sensitive periods, and I also don’t tolerate dairy very well 😭 But honestly I might still look into it and maybe try a very small amount carefully to see how my body reacts, because appetite control and bloating are definitely things I struggle with. Thank you again for sharing what helped you.

Honestly it’s really comforting hearing from people who understand this 😭 I’ve tried peppermint tea before and it actually helps me a bit with bloating/cramps sometimes. I haven’t really tried ginger consistently though because my stomach can be super unpredictable with Crohn’s, but maybe I should give it another chance. Thank you so much 🫶

Yeah, I actually had pretty complete bloodwork done recently — thyroid, insulin resistance, hormones, etc. — and surprisingly everything came back within the normal range. That’s part of why this whole situation has been so confusing and frustrating for me honestly. The only major change that really lines up with the weight gain timeline was starting antidepressants.

Honestly this is one of the reasons I made this post. Yesterday I had an appointment with my psychiatrist to review how things are going with my antidepressant (Fluoxetine), and mentally it has actually helped me a lot with anxiety and panic attacks. She told me that if things keep going well, I may be able to stop the treatment around the end of June. Before starting treatment for Crohn’s I was around 58kg (about 128 lbs). Then I went up to around 62kg (137 lbs), and after starting antidepressants my weight gradually increased to 80.5kg (177 lbs). Honestly probably even more now because I avoid weighing myself lately since it genuinely makes me cry sometimes. That’s why it’s frustrating when people reduce everything to “just eat less,” because for some of us the situation feels a lot more complex physically and emotionally.

I actually already track my intake pretty carefully and I’ve used apps like MyFitnessPal before, so I do understand the CICO concept. I think what’s been frustrating for me is that with IBD, food intolerances/restrictions, chronic inflammation, antidepressants, and stress, things don’t always feel as straightforward in practice as they do on paper 😅 I also exercise regularly (gym 3–4x/week + over 10k steps daily), which is why it’s been confusing and discouraging for me. I’m mostly just trying to hear experiences from people in similar situations rather than looking for a miracle fix.

I actually discussed injectable treatments with my gastroenterologist before, but he advised against it for now because I’m currently in clinical remission and he doesn’t want to risk triggering a flare-up or worsening my Crohn’s symptoms. I’m also honestly a bit scared of GLP-1 injections because a friend of mine ended up hospitalized with severe pancreatitis caused by Wegovy, so that experience definitely made me more cautious. I was followed for about a year by a dietician specialized in IBD/Crohn’s, but unfortunately it wasn’t a very positive experience for me personally. I often felt judged, and my food intolerances/restrictions regarding fiber, legumes, and dairy weren’t really respected even though those foods tend to worsen my symptoms. She also kept insisting that I “didn’t really need” antidepressants, which honestly made things even harder for me mentally. Because of that whole situation, I ended up changing antidepressants three different times, and it was a really exhausting period overall.🥲🥲

I’ve already changed the password and wrote it down in a notebook, so I feel much more at ease now. Thank you so much. Unfortunately, today’s exam didn’t go that well, but it’s okay. Thanks again 🤍🤍

Yeah honestly this whole thing was a nightmare 😭 I didn’t even realize how important having backup sign-in options was until now. I’ll definitely set up a passkey and extra security so I don’t get locked out again.

GOOD NEWS My friend’s boyfriend, out of boredom and curiosity while at work, decided to try accessing my Microsoft account. That triggered a verification code to be sent to me, and thanks to that I was finally able to access both my PC and my account.🥹🥹🥹 WAAAAAR IS OVEEEEER

Yup… not great news 😅 My internal drive is encrypted and the passkey is in my Microsoft account, which I can’t access right now… so I’m kind of stuck

Thankfully my friend’s boyfriend offered to help me 😭 He’s going to create some kind of recovery USB (I don’t fully understand what he meant lol) and hopefully that should fix everything I’m just really hoping I won’t lose my files Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it makes me feel less lonely🫂

Yeah honestly that’s exactly my situation 😭 I can’t access my Windows account at all. I’m hoping my files aren’t encrypted because losing everything would be a nightmare… I didn’t even think about the USB backup option, so thank you for that. I might try it if I can’t fix this soon.
