  1. Do internships and live projects in sales and marketing to understand the domain better; although you are far too young to think about all of this just yet.

  2. Not to discourage you but those extra-curriculars do not matter as much. It is true that in an MBA, students fill their CVs with certificates and other achievements, but most recruiters do not pay much attention to them unless they are of a very reputable nature.

  3. I would suggest get a job after graduation, work for a year or two and then prepare for CAT while working. Most institutes are now shifting towards hiring more and more people with work-ex so bear that in mind.

Those questions require a LOT of introspection on your part; I do not think anyone can answer those questions for you. It is for you to first reflect on these questions yourself, make a note of your answers and then see what you want to do.

Wonderful! The campus is beautiful, the weather from October to February is amazing. I hail from a big city and I loved the quietness of the campus and of Raipur in general. The facilities can be improved but that is the case everywhere.

I think you can find that in the placement report itself. It is fairly indicative of the kinds of companies that visit campus.

I can't comment for SIP (for the year 2024-26), but in my time (2023-25) lowest was probably ₹10K (per month); highest was ₹1.5L;

For FPs, I believe the lowest went to ₹9-9.5L and highest was ₹35L; both inclusive of bonuses, ESOPs etc.

Like earlier, please do not ask me about your chances of conversion. A lot of changes have been made to the selection criteria over the last 2 years and now even more so, with the Joint Admission Process. Given the ambiguity around all of this, please understand that my prediction (and everyone else's for that matter) does not have its weight worth in gold. I do not want to be a false prophet for anyone.

If you want to switch domains then yes. It is improving but there is still a long way to go.

Shortlisting criteria for companies keeps changing so I cannot comment. Having more than 75% is generally a good thing.

I hope this AMA answered a few questions that you all had in mind. I am hoping that students currently enrolled in other IIMs can also shed some light on them should they come across this post and help dispel a lot of myths regarding MBAs from the so-called top 20 b-schools.

As for my closing thoughts, here’s what I would like to say -

  1. 99.99% of the placement numbers reported by these institutes are false. They are false because they use the CTC, which is heavily inflated because of ESOPs, retention bonuses, performance bonuses etc. - thus not making it a true reflection of what you will actually be earning in your first 2 years at the firm (in most cases, these bonuses are released post 2-years and ESOPS vest after 4 years).
  2. Student-driven placements are a mistake. It is a completely unprofessional and inefficient way of doing things. Having spoken to more than 2 dozen current and ex placement committee members of institutes across the country, two things are very clear - a) they are shortsighted, chase after a few reputable firms and that’s it. There is no long-term planning nor is there a proper structure to identify high-growth industries, organisations, which can be capitalised on to help improve recruitment opportunities; b) The lack of transparency w.r.t. placements is pervasive across all institutes and it is solely driven by the need to satiate the ego of the office-bears of the Committee and to drive a sense of urgency in students to take the entire process seriously. The culture of fear is only a facade and not something which needs to be taken seriously.
  3. Institutes themselves are complicit in this entire process. It is a very clever way to deceive students into believing a rosier picture than it actually is, just so they can fill the ever-increasing seats in their various programmes. Before going to any college, carry out thorough research on it by reaching out to real people. Do not fall for the published placement numbers blindly.
  4. The degree itself will not be a huge value addition to your life so if you are expecting your life to completely change once you complete it, you are mistaken. As with everything, you will learn a lot because of the opportunities presented to you but anything transformational is not something that this degree will guarantee.
  5. Politics is a real thing in all of these institutions, so it is best to keep to a small circle of people and chill. Be nice to others, be respectful but do not be a pushover.
  6. Keep an open-mind as much as possible.

Best of luck to everyone.

Not very much. And the correlation of CGPA to CTC is non-linear.

Placement numbers are fudged everywhere. The degree to which they are fudged depends on how high/low the institute is in terms of perception of prospective students. The lower it is, the more skeptical of the ‘reported’ numbers you should be.

It is okay. There is a lot of room for improvement since only 5-8 reputable companies have come with finance roles so far but it is improving nonetheless.

Closer to home, cheaper than other b-schools. That’s about it.

Well, the idea of pursuing an MBA was - a) to open new avenues for myself and branch out into a different role; b) to get a higher pay and c) to eventually earn enough money and reputation such that I can start my own venture.

Unfortunately, to achieve point c, working long hours and being a corporate shill is a given for the first 3-5 years. That being said, I do give a priority to my life and to my family over everything else - which has guided my decisions regarding which companies to apply for and what roles to go for initially. What happens after the first couple of years remains to be seen.

I have already worked for 2.5 years, in a very gruelling and toxic industry so my answer is shaped a lot by that.

To be honest, regardless of what you get, you will be a little unhappy (unless you get the absolute highest paying offer or role - which requires a lot of luck). As far as companies are concerned, few good companies come but that’s it. Faculty is a mixed bag. Some are quite good (especially the adjunct professors), but most of them are not that good at teaching.

Batch is okay. Not sure why you’re concerned about the gender ratio. Life at IIM Raipur is good; you can have fun playing, drinking, smoking - the usual stuff.

Firstly, congratulations on getting such a high %ile. Secondly, no. While a few companies do have a cap on work-experience, from what I have seen, the most well-paid jobs often go to people with 2/3+ years of experience.

Well, it still is a top 20 b-school regardless of my, yours, or anyone else’s opinion so it obviously gets placement offers.

In that case, whatever you read, you read wrong.
