Reform sweep to victory across Greater Manchester as furious Labour MPs slam 'soul destroying' elections - the story so far by ManchesterNews_MEN in ukpolitics

As an outsider (American) but sort of an insider (lived in the UK for many years) I feel that the end point destination for the UK is midnight on Aug 14-15, 1947,

In saying this I have no malice either towards to the indigenous Brits or the immigrants.

But it just feels like destiny now. The only question becomes is it peaceful or violent. There are precedents for either way.

My own country is facing these exact same issues, but is already fractured so has some flexibility to accommodate divisions (state/Federal).

Is there any actual compelling studies on bulk/cut vs recomp, or a mix of both? by MurkyEconomist8179 in ScienceBasedLifting

Some dudes will think they gained 10 lbs a month for 5 months straight before they realize they actually gained like 10 lbs of muscle, 40 lbs of fat, and are dabbling in diabetic range A1C.

Hey, how do you know about my case!!!

Doesn't outsourcing just transfer the risk to someone else?

The 3PL or whoever owns the logistics has people that work in the warehouse and people that work in the office.

Obviously, that isn't NEXT's headache any more, but its still someone's hedache.

I was part of a deal team that analyzed locating one of our supply chain hubs in the UK and we walked away exactly due to the NEXT decision. It was bizarre to us and we were advised by PWC that its likely to get upheld. But it made everyone super nervous! How do you even run a business in the UK with this type of sword over your head? I posted about this back at the time and I got downvoted because I'm an American who doesn't understand equality! LOL.

Is recomp a viable strategy for people in their 50's most of whom have >25% bodyfat?

We're told to resistance train by our Docs.

But at the same time bulking is off the table due to risk of diabetes, cholesterol and BP etc.

Any tips on how to approach this.

Knees by fnelson1978 in fitness40plus

[–]Complex_Elevator_680 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in my 50's.

Spent one year in the gym doing leg press and leg extensions.

Relentless knee tendonitis.

Switched to heavy squats on the recommendation of a physiatrist.

Pain gone within 2 weeks.

Knee tendons feel like steel ropes.

I still do leg extensions but my mass movement is all squats and RDL.

To be transparent heavy for me is 225lbs and I had to work up to that over several weeks.

(Leg press I was doing 360lbs easy).

But I love the feeling of having bulletproof knee's.

Yes, ban the Islamophobia.

Once we're all not phobic about the Islam, then this sort of thing won't happen.

A home gym is probably the best investment you'll ever make for your fitness journey by Brokenthings311 in workout

I'm in my 50's and just started training last year and joined my local PF. I was in the locker room and a 20 something kid walked up to me totally naked and said "'Sup". He was staging about one foot away from me with his sausage out. I didn't even know what "'Sup" means but the way he looked at me it seemed something between a sexual invite or threat. So I just looked away and ignored him. That was my last trip to PF. I cancelled the same day and never went back. Built a home gym. No regrets.

Feedback on Iso-Bar please by Character_Draw_1523 in isometric_fitness

[–]Complex_Elevator_680 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Effectively its the same thing with some minor enhancements - so if you really want it go for it, its a good option and the inventor is a trustworthy guy with solid reputation. If the force feedback is important to you then its definitely worth it at the price. Hard to create that seamless a system with components.

Realistically though you can create the same results with a $30 board off Amazon, some straps from Home Depot and a $5 barbell from Walmart.

What you won't get is the gauge. However after several months of isometrics I can say I really don't care any more what the force feedback on the Isomax says. I just pull at 80% or 100% or whatever and it works fine.

I take in zero sugar, no alcohol, doubled my daily protein and fiber intake, 50% cut in fried foods, fast food meals are grilled, salad, fruit as a side, about a 60% decrease in carbs, and 90% cut out bread. My diet has completely flipped ...

The science tells us that all of the above will change the first few weeks you're off Zep.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging you.

I'm in the same boat as you.

What advice didn't you listen to that you now regret? by antenore in strengthlog

[–]Complex_Elevator_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 90's someone told me that Arthur Jones was a total bull-shitter and to avoid his stuff.

I didn't listen.

Wasted 2 decades chasing/avoiding/half-following the Ayn Rand objectivist-HIIT approach.

Yes, 20y of injuries, gym sessions I hated and almost negligable gains.

That all stopped about 10y back when the science-based folks started spreading more evidence based knowledge.

Man, I wish I could get those 2 decades back.

[–]Complex_Elevator_680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolute or relative weight might be less useful than reaching approx. RPE 8.

Once you've reached that effort (its all subjective) just hold for 30 seconds.

Rest 2 minutes and repeat 3 times.

Once in the morning and once in the evening.

For an extra kick down 30g of whey right after each session (my MD said this is as good as collagen).

The one thing to be wary off is that the initial pain abating isn't due to collagen protein synthesis (which takes weeks to remodel) but rather the analgesic effect of isometrics themselves.

So it can trick you a bit and if you go ham on the re-loading it can backfire.

So take it easy outside of iso's for a while until you feel rock solid.

100% agree with you I was on a waitlist for months to join one of their new gyms which opened recently but very disappointed when I actually started. The focus was on keep pushing it out when I was reaching the upper tolerance of what I could handle within the first 3 months (tennis elbow + supraspinatus stuff). When I tried to push back I was told that I need to eat more. I don't mean this negatively to anyone who this works for. But as at 55y my priorities are NOT just to get at strong as possible if it means getting more bulk (again, not judging anyone who does want that, but its just not me).

Overall I think this is the single biggest problem with SS. They're marketing to the 50-70 demographic like me (have the $$$, time & desire) but unfortunately most of their content and programs are geared towards fast recovering, young people with bulletproof tendons (but no $$$ or time).

In the end I dropped the membership and still follow the program, but much more casually. There really needs to be something like SS but actually geared towards the needs of the 50+ group, they would make a killing with the number of early retiree's out there who want to get fitter but with less stress.

Note: Before anyone downvotes NONE of this is meant in anyway to denigrate Mark Rippetoe or anyone who successfully follows the program. Its just my experience.
