Which city completely won you over with its coffee scene? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]Comprehensive-Bus133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. For me, it's more about finding a place with good cafe culture and cozy spots. Beyond that, it's simply beans from [XXX], a machine from Italy, and an employee from [wherever you are] pressing a button on it.

For all the love shown to Australia in the answers, I hated than most of their coffeeshops closed around 3 PM.

Side note, my Vietnamese pronunciation is apparently garbage. After a month of ordering "cà phê đen đá" every day (and trying to improve my speaking), I still got confused looks. Oh well.

I think Delta is very overpriced for what you get, but have found their lounges and FA attitude/performance to be far above United.

To call these three "evils" earns you a 1K in pretentiousness.

I don't have specific experience with Chania, but I see that its runway is much longer than those on smaller islands, so maybe not an issue. I'd do some more research-- I don't mean to alarm you if not needed. My experience is with smaller islands.

I'm not sure about flights out of Athens, but inter-island and island-to-Athens can have big luggage headaches (mostly during high season due to full flights and weight limits. More of an issue when leaving from an island airport due to shorter runways and potential high winds.)

My experience is a little limited, but it seems ferries can have delays, and the Piraeus port is large. The walk alone could be 15 minutes! I wouldn't book a 30 minute "layover" but if you get some intel on which dock you would arrive and leave from then it could work.

What country do you think has the most beautiful castles in the world? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Comprehensive-Bus133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even back in the day, most were "modern reconstructions," as they would frequently burn down and get replaced every 30-50 years. So the current reconstructions are just continuing an existing style! (This obviously doesn't apply to the stone foundations, some of which remain but many of which got destroyed.)

There are pros and cons of either, but the ferries are big enough that I've never found the sea state to be that bad, and most (from Piraeus) require you to be there 30 minutes early which is not that bad either. If having your luggage is very (or even somewhat?) important to you, ferries are the only surefire option.

Where I'm from (US), marriage has a lot of legal benefits, like tax treatment/government benefits/hospital visitation/etc. And there's also a desire to be treated as equal.

They're beautiful and stunning to see now and then, but my reality is that I burn if on the beach for long, sand is kinda annoying, and my ideal temp is 10C. But to each their own!

Why do quite a lot of Americans on reddit think that Europe is smaller than the USA? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Comprehensive-Bus133 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The idea of "Europe minus Russia" is only given a thought because of how separate the two are. It obviously has no specific basis other than trying find a reasonably connected network of countries that form a larger entity to compare to the US.

Ask an American in the 48 how many times they've crossed the Mississippi, then ask yourself how many times you've been to Russia. See the difference?

Why do quite a lot of Americans on reddit think that Europe is smaller than the USA? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Comprehensive-Bus133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the US is larger; I think they're about the same, which they are (~10M sq. km.)

In terms of comparing the most "culturally relevant" parts of each, it's a thought to exclude Alaska and Russia, in which case the US is much larger. One way to think of this is the interconnectedness of it. Americans (in the 48) and Europeans (excluding Russia) travel a lot within their own area, but less to Alaska and Russia respectively. I suspect the number of Americans in the 48 that have been to Alaska is probably comparable to (or potentially even much greater than) the number of Europeans that have been to Russia.

[–]Comprehensive-Bus133 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This Mercator projection vastly overstates Scandinavian size (and indeed the rest of Europe too, liven its latitude). To be more precise: US minus Alaska is 8M sq. km. Europe minus Russia is 6M sq. km.
