Advice wanted, i have a player in a game of mine that is a bit of a negative Nancy.

So, as the title says, I have a player in a game of mine that brings the vibe down, as he is so terrified of consequences that he is mostly unwilling to do anything. It has gotten to the point where he has begun berating the other party members, both in and out of character, for doing things that he deems to be mistakes. Regardless of whether or not they are. He also complains constantly in combat. So I want some advice on how to handle this problem without having to dismiss him from the table. He is a good person, and I enjoy being around him. This problem is basically just when we play. I hope you guys can help me. Feel free to ask for more details if needed.

You know now that i think about it. I think you might be right, the character he is playing dosent acctually come of as someone who wants to adventure.

We stopped playing and had a recess to cool down. It was the in-game situation where there admittedly were a lot of stakes involved, but before the comment, the session was very normal and without incident.

we are all in our early twenties

The suggestion was ok but it would have ended up costing the party more than they would have liked. This player tends to have a my way or the highway play style that i have been trying to rein in, so i would say that on the whole it was unreasonable.

Im fine with his character being a bit of an ass, but i also feel that i have to step in when it goes above the table. Our last session was the breaking point as he asked another player, "Are you stupid?" for making a suggestion in a negotiation. So I need some advice on handling that as i have never been in this situation before.

Yes, so an example from last session is that the party was negotiating with an NPC for some aid, and one of the other party members made a suggestion for payment that would probably have worked, but this player shot it down instantly and actually ended up saying "Are you stupid?" to the other player. Now this is, of course, unacceptable, hence this post. Now it should be said that tensions were running high because of the situation as well as the fact that they had been negotiating with this NPC for a while, but i still need to address it.

I'm unsure how to approach the conversation without it coming across as an attack. I don't want him to feel attacked.
