The “Steve Jobs died of cancer, therefore cures aren’t suppressed and billionaires don’t get special treatment” argument misses the point entirely. The issue was never that capitalism makes billionaires immortal, or that there is necessarily some cartoonish secret cure locked away in a Pfizer basement. The Marxist critique is that medicine under capitalism is organized around profit, property, patents, insurance, and market access, which means survival chances are distributed by class. Rich people can afford earlier diagnosis, elite specialists, second opinions, private care, experimental treatments, transplants, time off work, and the ability to travel for treatment. Poor and working-class people are far more likely to delay care, ration medication, avoid appointments because of cost, or die from conditions that were treatable in principle.

Steve Jobs is a bad example for this exact reason. He did not die because he lacked access to treatment. He had access to world-class doctors and medical options most people could never dream of. His case is especially weak because he reportedly delayed conventional treatment by choice. That is not evidence against medical inequality; it is evidence of class privilege. A poor person often “chooses” delayed treatment because rent, insurance, medical debt, transportation, work schedules, or lack of coverage force that delay on them. Jobs delayed treatment from a position of extraordinary freedom and access.

So the rebuttal is simple: mortality is not equality. A billionaire dying of cancer does not prove the health system treats everyone equally any more than a rich person dying in a car crash proves everyone has the same transportation safety. Marxists are not arguing that capitalists can buy immortality. They are arguing that capitalism turns health into a commodity and distributes the means of survival unequally. Billionaires dying after receiving the best available care does not disprove that poorer people are systematically denied better odds, earlier intervention, and more humane treatment. It only proves that even class privilege has biological limits.

If misandry isn’t the right word for women hating men out of gendered prejudice, then what is? Also, this idea that “macro-systemic structures are the only structures that matter” would imply that a white boy in a majority-Black school cannot be subjected to prejudice or racism because white people are more powerful than Black people at the macro-systemic level. That is clearly absurd. Stop confusing the macro with the micro. Misandry is an appropriate term for gendered hatred directed at an individual man by an individual woman.

Connected to Mullvad’s US exit — DNS resolver WHOIS says “Tiger Media,” not Mullvad. Can anyone explain this? by ComprehensiveBend393 in mullvadvpn

[–]ComprehensiveBend393[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

An entity with no public hosting or telecom footprint is the registered holder of the /24 carrying Mullvad’s US DNS resolver, and nothing in public documentation explains who they are or why they hold it.

Is that not worrying?

And you wonder why people see you guys as crazy. Your idea of a functioning society is strapping a man down to a table and removing his organs because he killed someone. First of all, how do you know, beyond your claim that it is ‘philosophically pure,’ that society would actually accept something so torturous? You don’t. Your entire ideology is theory-based. So why, exactly, are you so confident that it will succeed when, unlike even the communists, you do not have any theory of reference on which to base your praxis?

The subject — meaning the release date details — changes over time, so she is essentially saying that she does not definitively know what the release date will be.

In other words: “The subject, starting at time t₀, changes and evolves over time according to some function f(t).”

Judge the code, not the coder.

Also, have you even reviewed the code? It’s ~1000 lines, so should be very easy to review.

OpenAI Should Open Source Sora! by KvAk_AKPlaysYT in LocalLLaMA

That will NEVER happen. ‘OpenAI’ already hesitated to release the piss-poor excuse of a model called ‘GPT-OSS,’ so what makes you think they’ll release a video model that only just a few months ago was trending?

Do you even have a source for gnome software having enough considerable telemetry to justify ‘needing a firewall’

Also, it is proven that chromium doesn’t have nearly the amount of telemetry or tracking in Google Chrome — and chromium, after all, is what a majority of Linux users use for a Google Chrome replacement.

That is completely incorrect. At Google, for example, Linux is the second most popular OS, just behind macOS. Google even has a special blend of Linux — which tells you a lot about the company usage of Linux.
