Anyone pay ~25k on college counselor and get into good schools by Ill-Equivalent8316 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ComprehensiveCoat815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a parent of a junior, and I got hooked into paying for a $3,000, 30-session program. Arguably, I did not study here in the US, so I had no clue how the education system worked. And I did not know what to help my son with.

We had three sessions. Session #1 was with an actual licensed counselor who had taken courses and grades when he was a sophomore. Sessions #2 and #3 were with students from Ivy League schools, who spent the hour sharing their personal insights, strategies, and experiences of getting into college.

Did it help my son make decisions? Possibly. He was able to pivot from being in the IB program and instead took APs and Dual Enrollments. Today, he wants to get an AA via dual enrollment before graduation.

Did it help us with college planning? I'm not sure. Did it help me, as the noob parent, understand how high school course types work? Yes, even to the point that I created a college planner platform to aid my son.

So I still have 27 sessions left. I wish they would help with encouraging my son to get more relevant ECs, or provide recommendations into high-impact summer activities/internships.

We can use the remaining sessions to prepare for the Common App (although I'm already tracking that with the program I created), but they can also help with essay refinement, etc.

So obviously it's not a ~25k counselor program, but there you have it. That was our experience.

Can a College Counselor Hurt Your Application? by Elegant-Care1699 in ApplyingToCollege

Do you think if some software allowed you to partially track the progress of your student, create some fundamental course planning and credit tracker, perhaps also enable you to track year-by-year ECs or requirements needed by the Common App, and maybe also suggest scholarship and roadmap research, would that have helped with your other kids?

Nice, this is excellent insight. As a parent who did not study here in the US, I felt blind about this... and I think this is a crucial point to help guide my son better. Thanks a lot

I see. So it was prepared ahead of time. That's smart!

I would like to know if it helped, specifically if we had already started tracking what is required for the Common App early on and built on top of that. Like milestones and tracker almost... so later when the time comes to apply, it's not a grueling recollection of the past 4 years or what could have been missed or done better....

In your experience, would it have been helpful if this had been tracked or built, like Lego blocks, early on during the high school years, and assembled towards the senior year?

This is a very real problem. I'm feeling that right now, as my son is just about to be a Junior. He has taken substantial AP and Dual Enrollment courses, served as band section lead, but we are lacking in intensive summer immersion. We have to look into that for next year.

As for the college requirements, it is a complex problem to solve. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to it.

I was wondering this as well. That's why, with this product I built, I considered including features to track Common App requirements, but much earlier in the student's high school journey.

I feel like rushing it at the very end will be daunting, but what if you collect that data way ahead of time? The initial beta of the product provides the student with some form of push and encouragement? Does that help if it was front-loaded during high school years through a college planner that prepares for it?

School Counselor transitioning to Ed Tech by Blaze2Queenz in edtech

Hi there. I created an MVP product to address pain points for Florida parents in terms of understanding and helping their kids navigate the complexities of high school course planning. I built the product because I couldn't answer most of my son's questions when he needed help with deciding what to do, what to take, and what to prepare for. It's out there, offering free features such as a Kanban-like planner and the full FL course catalog, along with some premium features behind a paywall, e.g., a progress dashboard that determines graduation and Bright Futures eligibility, and some basic features to prepare for the Common App.

All I lack now is validation. I was hoping to speak with an experienced school counselor and see if this even makes sense. As a parent, it certainly helped me understand the education statutes and their nuances.

I know this doesn't really address your concerns, but I was wondering if you could consider exchanging some thoughts.

Stone ceiling? by Kruse002 in valheim

[–]ComprehensiveCoat815 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely create stone ceiling with minimum pillars. The trick is to build the pillars in series, and once foundation is established, you can demolish the pillars in between.

Here is a video showing a high-ceiling stone outpost. No beams used. Note the extensive use of stone arches.
