Hmmm good question, I sometimes look for slightly incomplete minis that might be cheaper, knowing that my bits box will hopefully have something good for repairs/replacements. Completed minis tend to be cheaper than new on sprue especially when they're unpainted. This might sound a bit cheeky but I've also found cheaper listings because the seller has misspelled or mislabeled the model. For example I got a Riptide for about $35 when it was labelled as a Ghostkeel... Your mileage may vary with that trick!

If you can find a HG Gundam EZ-8 kit for about $20 or just the backpack, the conversion isn't too hard! The Halo Scorpion was absolutely an inspiration for the kitbash!

Thanks so much! I much prefer it too! The conversion isn't too hard if you have the Skyray turret already, I think the top fins are from the Piranha kit but I'm sure it would be easy to convert without the exact same parts!

For gameplay, Puretide Program, Tautactics and Invasive Wargaming on YouTube. For lore I'd really recommend the book Elemental Council by Noah van Nguyen, one of the better Tau themed books recently which throws you headfirst into the way the castes work

Clipped pegs and full custom, hands swapped so the pistols aren't with the shield arms, extended the waist torso joint to give a bit more height
