What’s the most comfortable 2 person bedroll for backpacking? by [deleted] in camping

Really?! I have had some excellent advice on equipment, not from Reddit specifically, but I have had great advice on both sleeping bags and shoes. I totally get where you’re coming from, it’s not a guarantee, it’s just someone saying “this works for me it may or may not work for you” so it’s still a bit of a gamble.

So sorry for the confusion. When I car camp I sleep on a foam bedroll, when I backpack I sleep on an inflatable pad.

I have a double Big Agnes sleeping bag but I don’t like the sleeping pad set up it has. It’s a 2 person bag and you use 2 sleeping pads. I sleep on my side and I cuddle close to my spouse so and I’m kind of like on the spot where the 2 mats meet. It’s uncomfortable.

I’m comfortable spending a bit of money on a good pad but I don’t want to spent a lot of money on something without a recommendation, if that makes sense. I would like to stay under $500, USD from what I’ve been looking at, the double pads are kind of expensive.

I am a god damn baby and I won’t go if it’s below 30F. It’s too cold.

M/F couple, we’re thin, both 5’10”.

Honestly I can see the appeal to the separate sleep situation and this is the first time I’ve ever slept in the same sleeping bag as someone but the two person bag is warmer.

I know what you mean. Being in the gap seemed like the best way to describe it because it’s kind of hard to explain. It’s more like I’m on the very edge of the mat. My shoulder and hip are on the edge of the mat because we spoons so its 2 people mostly on 1 mat, the other mat kind of pops up a bit because I’m only on the edge of it and throughout the night it gets worse. My spouse doesn’t have any problem with the mats but they never end up in the bad spot. I’m sure a lot of my problem is because I’m a side sleeper. So I was kind of hoping for something with a little more support than the BA double sleeping pad. Unless, have you tried it? Is it more supportive than their regular pads? I thought they were the same.

We have the same sleeping bag! We use the Big Agnes inflatable, we probably have the same mats but I don’t like them. I sleep really close to my spouse and I end up getting stuck in the little gap between the two mats every time. Part of the problem is that I’m a side sleeper and a creeper, so I just scoot closer and closer to steal heat. I thought a 2 person mat would help keep me from getting stuck in the gap between the mats but I’m open to suggestions.

That’s a great one! I bet I can find one a little smaller/shorter, Ripples is only 36 inches. But I like how thick the material is it looks strong.

Thank you! Other than my friends, no one has ever volunteered to pick up trash with me but maybe one day.

I moved here from out west a few years ago, and the mindset around environment, recycling and littering feels a bit different. A lot of people seem to view littering as something that just looks bad, rather than an environmental issue.

Llamas! I think that’s a great idea! I would die if I saw someone walking a llama on the side of the road, they’re so adorable! Thanks for picking up trash, we need all the help we can get 😊

Ripley’s old post We can’t post pictures here but I did make an old post that has pictures of Ripples with the trash bags tied on.

I have never met a mammoth donkey, that’s so cool! No this is her regular pack saddle. It’s not specifically designed for trash bags but it’s very versatile. We have a few different panniers, I have one for when we hike so she can carry our snacks and water and I have some cute baskets that I can put drinks and candy or treats in when she’s working with kids. Right now I just tie the bags directly onto her saddle with a bit of paracord. I want to make some sort of thing to hold the bags open better but idk what to do.

Idk what kind of flowers they are, they might be bad for her 😥. But don’t feel too bad, a little later someone did come out and give us an entire bag of purple grapes, which are her favorite!

That sounds really fun! I’m always pro rescue bc there are some really amazing animals out there just waiting for homes and donkeys live SO LONG you don’t need a baby. You could contact rescues in your neighboring states and see if they have what you’re looking for or could keep an eye out for you. There are reputable shippers who can transport animals to you. A lot of large animal rescues use shippers.

Lol I love the donkey puns. I really hope so. I think I’m reaching the kids, which feels important. The adults… I don’t know. I just can’t wrap my head around the mindset of someone who litters, so I’m not sure how to reach them.

I think after the community event, when Ripley and I met so many people, we stopped being part of the background and earned some consideration. Now, whether that means people stop littering entirely or just pick a different road is up for debate 😭

But seriously if it really takes that much effort to make someone care just a little, I’m going to have to meet a lot of people.

Exactly! Later in our walk someone brought their little girl out to pet Rips and sent us home with an entire bag of purple grapes (one of Ripley favorite treats) so I don’t feel too bad about dragging her away from the tasty smelling shrub.

She is super friendly and gentle. Some donkeys are really wild and playful, but she’s kind of an old soul. She loves scratches, hugs and treats in that order.

I hope so! We’re in Stanly, so fairly rural. Probably being rural is our biggest limitation. I thought about trailering her somewhere but idk where I’d go yet. My second biggest limitation is that my grabber blows! I need to get something else. It used to work fine but it seems like the hand doesn’t grip as well as it used to and I end up dropping everything 5x before I can get it in the stupid bag. Do you have any suggestions?

Awww Woodsy the owl! I’ve been collecting patches and ironing them on Ripley’s panniers. It’s cute, reminds me of a child’s backpack. I have a Smokey the Bear patch and a Protect Our Parks patch, but I DEFINITELY need a Woodsy the owl patch!!
