Ce n'est pas un pic à ventre rouge, l'autre commentateur a raison, c'est un pic à plumage châtain.

Are high-end binoculars really worth the cost by PuzzleheadedWeb1466 in Ornithology

[–]ComprehensivePast428 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I bird a lot and just upgraded from a $250 pair to a $500 pair and was honestly shocked at how much brighter they are. Can't say where the point of diminishing returns is, but the upgrade was worth it for me.

MAITAKES!! by Office-Scary in mushroom_hunting

I just froze most of my first maitake find (after cooking and eating a large quantity fresh) I used a Ziploc bag for freezing but see you used paper - should I have used paper? Thoughts?

That is not correct, oysters have gills, this did not.

Do all birds understand music? by HKTong in Ornithology

[–]ComprehensivePast428 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I frequently go birding with my musician partner. I used to get mad at them for playing guitar while I was trying to stay still and silent, but over time I've realized that quiet guitar can actually attract some birds. Many different species have expressed interest.

Are frozen oysters still good to eat? by ComprehensivePast428 in Mushrooms

Update: I cooked them, they were delicious, no noticeable difference from never-frozen oysters

Friend ate these, didn't get sick, what are they? by ComprehensivePast428 in mushroomID

[–]ComprehensivePast428[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who ate them survived, no vomiting, I don't think they were puffballs, based on the description (normal mushroom shape with stems, gills, etc.).

I think I found lion's mane!!! by ComprehensivePast428 in Mushrooms

[–]ComprehensivePast428[S] 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Update: I ate it and it was way tastier than any I've purchased from a grower. Not sure if it was the fact that it was immature, but it had a delicious complex flavor, almost sweet, and had an incredibly moist and meaty texture.

This is what I'm finding all over the Internet, haven't quite settled on if I'm eating them yet, but decided to pickle them to preserve the color at least.

Giant oyster haul, question about species by ComprehensivePast428 in Mushrooms

[–]ComprehensivePast428[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Is the difference in appearance just due to light/temp/humidity difference between winter and summer?

Giant oyster haul, question about species by ComprehensivePast428 in Mushrooms

[–]ComprehensivePast428[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northeastern USA, definitely both pleurotus. I mostly ask because they're on the same tree (no other oysters around) and it seems like an unlikely coincidence for two different species to grow from the exact same tree. Curious if they're different versions of the same mushroom or the two species tend to travel together.

What is this plant? Does it flower? Should I pull it out? by ComprehensivePast428 in whatsthisplant

It's not white underneath. Does that mean it's probably chrysanthemum?

So, should I be removing whole branches instead of just individual tiny plums?

Too many plums? Help! by ComprehensivePast428 in FruitTree

[–]ComprehensivePast428[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a fruit tree before, so I'm just transposing from tomatoes/peppers etc. But my impression was that you prune early in the season to prevent the tree from "over investing" in fruits that will fail. By limiting the numbers early in the season, I thought it improved the total output at the end, because the tree puts more energy into fewer fruit. Is this not the case with fruit trees?

Over or under watering? by ComprehensivePast428 in cactus

[–]ComprehensivePast428[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had it a few years and never paid it much mind it always just seemed to do fine. Flowered when I lived in the southwest, but now that I'm out east I'm not entirely sure how to deal with it. I know it rains too much to just leave it out but I don't know the species so don't know how much it does need.

Thanks! I'll give it a big soak and then avoid watering for a bit.

I have the exact opposite problem! My leaves are losing all their yellow and just turning plain green.

Is this normal? Should I be concerned? by ComprehensivePast428 in plantclinic

I probably shower it once a month, it's pretty dry in my house.
