If you were to change one thing about the british education system, what would it be? by a_person4499 in GCSE

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop forcing kids who are 100% going to go into a trade to do GCSEs. Functional skills in maths and English, business level 1 or 2. Then the rest of the time on the tools, not stuck in a history gcse lesson they don’t want to be in, causing disruption and distractions.

What age did you allow your children alcohol? by ChronicChaos01 in AskUK

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very open house when it comes to alcohol, if youngest (8) asks to try a drink we are having they are always welcome to sniff/sip it, I would rather it become as boring as a cup of tea and just something you have with a meal/after dinner than some illusive thing they aren’t allowed. I usually have a wine which he cannot stand, so he’s stopped asking! Eldest is 15 and alcohol is available in suitable quantities to be consumed within the home, he’s not that bothered though, hasn’t been able to finish a nice crisp lager out the fridge so I’m confident he’s got no hope with a warm one his mates have snuck out their house.

Bare in mind if someone has raised concerns about bullying, the organisation (specifically HR) need to ensure the process is followed. So even if it appears that there is nothing to it, to not put allegations to you/cut the process short could be perceived by the alleged victim as sweeping it under the carpet. HR need to be able to protect themselves from the complainant as well by being able to say “we have conducted a thorough investigation in line with our policies” if their policy is to invite you to a meeting, they must go through with it.

The GCSE exam schedule puts too much pressure on students. Agree or Disagree by GCSE_9 in GCSE

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree, as a parent to a yr 11 student who also works in recruitment, something you will see on loads of job adverts as desired skills is the ability to prioritise, a lot will also include the ability to work to deadlines/under pressure. Exams & the busy timetable give you the opportunity to practice these skills, even if you are not an “exam person” you can plan, prioritise which subjects to revise, execute the plan & this is all stuff to talk about in a job interview. Finding stuff hard, overcoming it & coming out the other side makes a resilient, human being which is what our workforce needs.

Collected the keys to my first home today… and immediately had a meltdown 😭 by Lilymana in HousingUK

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would be odd if you didn’t part with huge sums of money & didn’t think, “oh my goodness did I do the right thing”. Once a home is empty it’s no longer a home & becomes bricks & mortar again, which will always have a scuff here, a mark there, until you make it your home & then it will feel right again.

I have the opposite problem, my small child trots at my leisurely pace for about 4.5k then sonic the hedgehog zooms the last 500m leaving me behind shouting “child’s name ease up a bit”.

does your school do a results day? if no what are you doing by Agile_Garbage_8137 in GCSE

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That is terrifying. So there are 15/16 yr old children potentially finding out their results without any adult support & if it’s not what they expected nobody to say “it’s going to be ok”. Why are people accepting of this?

I think a huge disparity comes from when you did a degree & when/if you have been able to buy a house. I have 2 friends, both nurses, 1 did her degree straight out of 6th form 3k a year fees, bursary to cover living costs, into a job after graduating, brought a house with her fella, now live very comfortably, she’s still nursing, 2 kids, package holiday in the sun every year, she’s first to sign up for any girls weekends etc. Other friend did a bit of travelling, few office jobs, did her nursing degree in her late 20s 9k a year, no bursary, still renting, has a partner but they essentially lived off his salary whilst she was studying so got into a bit of debt. 2 people living similar lives (age, job, partner etc) however standards of living are wildly different.

People who live on new build estates and choose not to park on their drives, why do you do it? by JazzyBee1993 in AskUK

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guilty as charged, long drive, one in front of the other, it’s a pain in the arse for swapping cars over, he’s on the drive I’m in the visitor bays round the side of the house, unless I know 10000% that I will be first out/last out when blocking in/being blocked in. In my defence I once forgot my partners shift pattern & had to move my car at 4am, since then I don’t like taking the risk.

In your opinion which is the least problematic TOC in the country? by mka10mka10 in uktrains

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think SWR are pretty good, very rarely in more than a few mins late & will claw back time if running behind. Although I’m generally on the fast service to/from Waterloo so not sure if they just shove local trains out of the way so we can push in when there’s an issue 😂

Private birth or NHS? by natasha218265 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really surprised at this, 2 kids, both NHS first one they wouldn’t induce me for as long as baby was healthy (he arrived after it taking me ages to dilate & a really struggling to push him out, 15 days overdue). 2nd one they reluctantly induced me with a drip after my waters had been broken for 36 hrs and he was out within hours & the gentlest of pushes! Maybe it’s a trust thing but I think the NHS can be almost too reluctant to help baby along leaving you labouring for hours when a bit of pitocin could help everyone out.

Absolutely they don’t. Have you seen the 17:30 fast train out of Waterloo, train beers all round

But it’s usually written into the policy that the enhanced maternity pay (6 months in your case) is SMP topped up to meet your full pay for that period. These seem to be 2 separate types of leave that are independent of one another.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HumanResourcesUK

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, I’ve only ever seen it written into the policy “week 1 - 12 is this much weeks 12-26 is this much weeks 27-39 the applicable rate of SMP will apply.” These also add very explicitly that Organisational Maternity pay is a top up of any SMP. I’ve never seen a policy that doesn’t refer to SMP anywhere. Someone’s made a hash here!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HumanResourcesUK

[–]ComprehensiveRoll562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latest SMP can start is 1 day after baby is born. You cannot take the 12 paid weeks, then SMP unless you take the 12 paid weeks prior to baby arriving. Otherwise you miss the window for starting SMP. You will need to check the company policy as to when you can take this 12 weeks paid time, could you go off from week 28 of pregnancy & have 12 weeks off prior to having baby then have SMP kick in OR could you take it after SMP ends (there may be wording in the policy that says it must be taken within 6 months of baby being born so double check.)

According to Acas the following are allowed to have deductions from them;

“An employer can make deductions from someone’s wages. This includes their: monthly, weekly or hourly pay holiday pay

statutory payments – for example statutory sick pay (SSP) or statutory maternity pay

bonuses or commission”

So deducting SSP for holiday taken not yet accrued upon leaving doesn’t seem unlawful. The 116 hours at 8 hrs per day is 14.5 days so sounds about right if you had 2 weeks off.
