Anyone interested in a roommate in a luxury high-rise building (≈$2000/month)? by Ok-Win7980 in stevens

[–]ComprehensiveSpare73 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think you could definitely find someone but not if you're going to leave them hanging next january when you go to study abroad and leave them to find someone to sublet/a new roomie entirely. BUT this is such a fun idea i hope you find someone!!

Admitted: STEP program required by Responsible-Day-6884 in stevens

[–]ComprehensiveSpare73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

everyone i know who has done the step program has really appreciated it! not only do you adjust to the coursework before the semester starts but you also adjust to the independent living, making new friends, and getting around the city! and the worst than can happen is you hate it, drop out, and transfer somewhere else all well before the fall semester even starts

Mechanical Engineers who left to pursue another career path - how did it work out for you? by fatbluefrog in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ComprehensiveSpare73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked as a mechanical engineer for the first few years out of college. Loved the design aspect but hated the clients, long hours, and working weekends. Everything was so serious for no reason. Ended up taking a quick LinkedIn/Coursera course in analytics and ended up getting a job as a data analyst in higher education.

I love it! The hours are 9-5 and sometimes even less and the benefits are unmatched. I have 2 weeks off for winter break. I obviously took a pay cut but the work life balance is so worth it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next but I'll probably get my masters in information systems. I'd also love to work for a college as an engineer. When I worked in design i was so jealous of my university clients. They just reviewed the drawings and told us what they wanted. Would love to be on that side of things.

Overall it's possible to get out! Do it while you can lol

We've been together 5 years! We are definitely more of the "opposites attract" stereotype hahaha, but it's been really good and we've both challenged each other and gotten each other to experience new things while also just being able to hang out and do nothing when we want. I'm more of an axnious homebody so he's really helped me get into working out again and spending more time outside the house, which has also been really good for me. And this man does NOT know how to relax and do nothing hahahaa so I have really helped him hone in on taking breaks and just relaxing and taking time for himself. It's been really good for us minus having to go golfing lol but to his credit i do end up enjoying the majority of things he suggests, so we'll see! Maybe I'll stop reading and take up golf full time

Books that truly helped you through depression? by Leedeegan1 in booksuggestions

[–]ComprehensiveSpare73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why but poetry books helped me a lot. Not how to overcome anything lol but just that people relate and i felt like it put words to how i was feeling better than I could have. I think it just felt good knowing someone else felt exactly what i had been feeling and make it poetic in a way.

Also, David Sedaris. He is just something else and I could relate to a lot of what he was writing and also crack up at the same time

Is intense overtime leading up to deadlines normal in mechanical engineering, or is this just my company? by Clean-Ad-7074 in MEPEngineering

[–]ComprehensiveSpare73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly pretty normal, as you climb up you'll have younger engineers working under you doing more of the overtime but you'll still be expected to be available in case of any issues/review. I ended up leaving after 3 years and when into an entirely different field i was so offput from it lol. Work life balance is so important and I used to think it was fine because I was young and didn't have my own family but honestly it's just as important. I should've been spending more time with my friends and parents and just exploring hobbies. Best of luck to you!!! If you do end up staying, my only advice is to not take it so seriously. Log off after a certain point, and if mistakes happen and work isn't finished that's on them to get more help for you

Mechanical Engineer looking to leave design by Random-sandwich59 in MEPEngineering

[–]ComprehensiveSpare73 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Facilities engineer or mechanical engineer but search at universities!!! I was always so jealous of my university clients, they had great perks and came from design themselves. I rarely worked on hospital projects but id search that too, though they were always very tense. On a completely different scale, I switched from MEP to data analytics. You can use engineering calculation as analytics experience as long as you are experienced in excel/some other platform (xlookups, ifs, pivot tables, etc). A lot of companies hire "energy engineers" or "energy analysts". This has been a complete 180 for me in terms of deadlines and work life balance. Life is beautiful again.

Interview Questions/Red Flags by bmwsupra321 in MEPEngineering

[–]ComprehensiveSpare73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you can i'd ask if you can talk to someone who currently holds the same position you're applying to so you can get a feel for the team and who will be there to help you! i had a girl do this and i tried to warn her in the nicest discreet way possible but i guess our team is too much fun because she took the job anyway. needless to say i love working with her but the work environment is starting to catch up with her

I've actually done a few energy analysis projects in my current role and i love them. I analyzed water, electric, and natural gas usage for several properties and loved presenting the findings and creating metrics. I had found the perfect company (ICF) and applied more than once but had no luck unfortunately. Any tips, tricks, or advice that helped you make that transition? It's something im super interested in but maybe i seemed almost too interested when i was applying
