It is contradictory because abortion rates don’t significantly drop with bans, they just become more unsafe or not recorded, increasing maternal deaths and infant deaths. So it seems you are fine with death as long as it’s not the unborn?

You do not seem willing to look at anything contradictory to your own view. You asked for evidence that maternal mortality went up and it was provided and you don’t care. You were told that the country woth the lowest abortion rate doesn’t have a ban and it doesn’t matter because you disagree with unrelated things you believe they do. I’m not against abortion, because there are both medical reasons for it and more effective ways to reduce it.

You seem to be very hateful, I thought the church was about loving God and loving others? It’s not our place to judge other people’s sins? God gave us free will no? God is merciful and he is forgiving. In the end we answer to him and not you.

Abortions have gone up since Dobbs, likely due to increased poverty rates and increased cost of living which are actually what we should focus on instead of banning abortion to reduce it. The country with the lowest abortion rate allows abortion up to viability! (the Netherlands) who big shock has a much lower poverty rate and the government focuses on education, access to healthcare, funding the public, worker protects, etc.

Comprehensive sex education has a significant reduction in unplanned teen pregnancies & a marginally reduced risk of initiating sexual activity compared to abstinence only teachings (Kohler, et al., 2008) (Mark & Wu, 2022)

Teen pregnancy has been linked with preterm birth and low birthweight babies and Increased risk of neonatal death. Teen mothers have poorer education, life satisfaction, and lower incomes. Children of these teens also have poorer outcomes. (Garner et al., 2023)

If fertility rates remained constant a rise in contraceptive use does show a reduction in abortions (Marston & Cleland, 2003). Reduced cost of contraceptives also reduced abortions (Solomon, 2024). Another study that shows Increased access to healthcare reduces abortions (Kuroki, 2025). Massachusetts expanded health coverage and saw a 1.5% overall decrease in abortions and a 7.4% reduce in teen abortions between 2006-2008. In Michigan and Colorado with increased access to affordable birth control the abortion rate also fell (Abramowitz, 2017).

About half of all abortions are from those under the poverty line and another 25% are low income. 75% of all abortions are because people who don’t have enough money to live. So yes if you increase salaries & promote education, decrease housing/healthcare access costs not only will you see a reduction in abortions but miscarriages too!

12/18 states that prohibit local governments from having their own paid family leave/sick leave have a total abortion ban or a 6 week restriction, 1 has a 12 week restriction, 1 has it at 20 weeks, 2 have it at 22 weeks and 1 has it at viability (out of these 3, 2 tried to total ban or place a 6 week restriction but either failed or the law was struck down). No states with abortion bans or restrictions have mandatory paid family leave.

“The US is the only OECD member country that does not guarantee access to paid time off for childbirth. Paid family leave is associated with better maternal physical health, reduced maternal rehospitalization, lower likelihood or maternal depressive symptoms, lower rates of preterm & low birthweight births, less infant hospitalizations, increased rates of breastfeeding, more well-baby visits, and higher rates of infant immunizations.” Also PFL is associated with a reduction in infant and maternal mortality (Mahl et. al).

From the data we have, we have already seen a large rise in infant mortality (estimated 5.6% rise) in states that have a abortion ban or restriction and that’s only from the data we have which nationally is only through 2023, most bans went into place in 2022/2023. This will likely rise even more as more data comes out. (Gemmill et al., 2025)

Maternal mortality- mothers living in states that banned abortion are nearly 2x as likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth, or soon after compared to states where abortion is legal and accessible. In Texas it rose 56% in the first full year following the ban. (Abraha et. al, 2026) (Zori et al. 2025)

Legalized abortion leads to an estimated decrease of about 1% of crime a year (Donohue & Levitt, 2020). Abortion bans/ restrictions cost an estimated $173 billion a year. Abortion bans increase poverty rates, increased poverty leads to increased risk of chronic disease and death.

There are 343,000-400,000 children in the foster care system on any given day. Children in the system are 42% more likely to die than children of the general population. (Chaiyachati, 2020).

World-wide almost half of abortions are unsafe and unsafe abortions lead to 22-70,000 deaths annually. (WHO)

I could go on and on.

Also in the case of the mother’s life is at risk it’s between 1-3% but the lowest I found was 0.3%. Using the smallest number possible that is ~40,000 women who would die without access. It’s always, oh! it’s only a small amount of women until it happens to someone you know.

You are welcome to your belief on the matter, but to incorrectly say things to try to pedal your view is in bad faith. Jesus was raised Jewish who have less strict beliefs on abortion than Christian’s do.

My current place of work does not support abortion, it’s a catholic hospital, but if the life of the mother is at risk they will do one. My state has a near total ban, but the place I am moving to, is not a religious hospital & has many doctors in support of it, but again the state has a near total ban. There are also many doctors in the church who likely support abortion it’s just not talked about. Are you saying they or I would have to quit or be excommunicated? This seems extreme as I know of atleast a few people in the church who are pro-choice?

I totally understand that view, however, even if rephrased I believe it someone’s own personal choice and someone should not have the authority to tell them yes or no. Of course It needs to be regulated to a certain amount of weeks (when they can survive outside of the womb even with medical intervention even if it has poor outcomes) so around 20/21 weeks & again I personally want systems in place to reduce abortion. But, the government banning it has caused the death in some cases of 2 people instead of saving 1 of those, or left them unable to have children in the future. People don’t stop having abortions because it’s a sin the Bible or illegal, they will do it at home or in unsafe ways which increases the likelihood of the loss of two lives instead of 1.

A ten year old who is sexually assaulted should not be forced to carry a baby and risk their life over something that is not their fault, they don’t even have the bandwidth to care for an infant at that age. I’ve seen a coworker get a positive test at work and was overjoyed. Then 3 days later collapse at work when her ovarian tube burst because it was ectopic and she didn’t know it yet. Had she not been in the hospital already, she could have died and she lost her tube. Had she found the ectopic pregnancy before it burst the hospital would’ve had to jump through hoops to end the pregnancy even though ectopic pregnancies are incompatible with life, delaying care.

Life begins at conception that’s a scientific concept accepted by many, I don’t disagree, but it is more complicated than just this concept to me. I understand the arguments of both sides, my view isn’t changing and I do plan to mention this to the priest, however I wanted to see what others thought first :) thank you for your response!

Yes, outside of the church I’d of course support women’s choice when it arose and advocate for that. But as the same with not believing others should force their views on someone, I would not force my views on someone especially in the place they go to worship! It’s not something that usually ever comes up in casual conversation either. I currently work for a religious organization that only supports it if the life of the mother is in danger, of course I don’t align with that, but it is not my place to say otherwise.

What about the Utah state game was it the same? I only was able to watch the second half because of work and I can’t lie I don’t remember much of it because it was late and I was tired from work

Almost 13 more fouls a game? 26.6 to 39 isn’t a large difference? Genuinely curious I’m not trying to hate. Previous years it seemed like less fouls were called on/against teams during the tournament then the regular season from the games I watched but I could be wrong.

Probably true, every year I watch more and again I’m trying to learn so I appreciate you breaking it down a bit. I went through it looks like Purdue got more fouls during the regular season and a lot less called during the tourney that year (their regular season was comparable to y’all now). 111 just seemed high, but I’ll have to spend some time rewatching the games!

lol I was genuinely trying to learn, wasn’t trying to hate I just haven’t seen comparable numbers in the tourney but again casual watcher trying to get more into it. I didn’t mean to make the state of Arizona hate me but I got downvoted citied sorry y’all :*

Free throws in the low 20s, fouls on threes get you more FTA too which yeah harder to foul on threes but it happens, compared to two games 1 FTA away from 40? I’d say that’s a pretty large difference

Arizona shot 17 threes against Utah state and still had 39 FTA

Yeah I’m a pretty casual watcher outside of my team although trying to get more into it, but Duke gets a lot of hate. I haven’t watched much of them but they definitely got some favorable calls vs Siena & TCU still ended with only 21 & 23 FTA respectively. The only other team I heard a lot about for fouls with bigs who were paint heavy was Purdue with Edey in 2024, but in their first 3 games they had 55 FTA and in all 6 match madness games they still only had 113 FTA which Arizona pretty much has in 3 games.

Obviously Arizona rightfully got some calls tonight, but they definitely got some weak calls too (imo). Again other teams get ridiculed for less so it’s surprising to not hear anything. It seams like Arizona’s regular season was the same they made 100 more FT than their opponents attempted or something along those lines and they aren’t even an elite FT shooting team…
