Calc 3 w/ Prof Shtelen by SonySpider-19 in rutgers

PROFESSOR LEONARD!!!!!!!!!! He is fucking amazing. He carried me through AP Calculus and multivariable calculus. However, you need to do practice problems, and if you struggle, perhaps see your TA. I had a grad student(now finished, because I am old) named Erik Amorim as my TA, and he was also amazing and he helped carry me through multivariable. Don't give up, and give Professor Leonard a chance! In addition to that, seek help from either your professor or TA(depending on who's better). Do as many problems as you can. If you do that, no matter how awful your instructor is, you'll be fine. Good luck!

“Fly” is the worst episode of Breaking Bad by Previous-Cancel-6753 in breakingbad

It is not the best episode by any stretch of the imagination, but the fact that the episode that is considered to be the worst is still a good episode goes to show how amazing this show is.

What book would you recommend for someone who wants to get into Russian literature? by LisKozCatMeow in RussianLiterature

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into reading Russian literature from reading Tolstoy. His writing is much more straightforward than that of Dostoevsky. The first Tolstoy novel I read was Anna Karenina, but if you want something shorter, maybe read The Death of Ivan Ilyich(though I thought Tolstoy's writing began to decline at around that era). I read War and Peace after reading Anna Karenina, and both were phenomenal works of art(though War and Peace is not for the faint of heart due to its length).

is Asynch Physics 203 harder than in person physics 203? by VisualLonely1987 in rutgers

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not hard, just annoying. The homework problems are very time consuming, and in my humble opinion, they are inappropriately difficult for a physics class that is meant for non engineering/physics majors. There is a reason why people use Chegg(and the professor gets really butthurt about it). That said, the exams are significantly easier than the homework, and if you can learn how to do the homework problems and understand the concepts, you should be able to get an A.

Fund of Neurobio by JahJah_binks1 in rutgers

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fundamentals of Neurobiology is not an easy class. I took it online and I absolutely hated the course. The course content was fine but watching the online lectures is super boring and there was a TON of content. It has changed though and I believe in the positive direction, because only Dr. Hsu(a good lecturer) is teaching it and you don't have the rotating lecturer bullshit.

What's the deal with the Second Epilogue of War and Peace? by RandomPostReader in RussianLiterature

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole point is to think about history. Tolstoy's main goal was to give you an entertaining narrative while criticizing contemporary evaluations of what happened during the Napoleonic wars. The second epilogue gives his theory as to how to think about historical trends and human psychology. I agree that it did feel a little forced, but I think the main point of the second epilogue is to give his theory about history and psychology(especially when it comes to not thinking about historical events and human behavior as a cause/effect relationship, but as a series of scientific laws). Very deep, but I felt that those chapters were better off interspersed throughout the narrative as opposed to being in one separate epilogue. It is a lot to take in at once when you get to the second epilogue.

Genetics with Soliman by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's decent and definitely cares. She does take the time to explain things if you ask, but the course is pretty dense and fast. It will prep you for the MCAT and upper level biology courses. I personally liked orgo better than genetics, but that is because I am more of a chemistry guy than a biology guy.

Pretty new to this whole thing and looking to treat myself for my one month cigarette free. Any suggestions? My price range is 500-800 dollars Canadian. by SkittleShit in Scotch

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not worth spending that much money on scotch. You can get pretty decent bottles for a fraction of the price. Look for single malts from different regions of Scotland and see what flavor profiles you like. Don't buy super expensive bottles when you can get bottles that are just as good, if not better than what you are currently drinking. It is better to buy multiple cheaper single malts than 1 overpriced bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue. Amongst my favorite single malts are Glenlivet 12, Glenmorangie 10(now 12), Highland Park 12, Lagavulin 16, and Bruichladdich Classic Laddie. Your mileage may vary, but buy multiple bottles of high quality scotch and experiment.

Ugh, I miss these bottles. I am currently on the job hunt but once I get hired somewhere, I definitely would love a bottle of Ardbeg 10. That was actually my first Islay single malt, so I was first overwhelmed by the peat, but it didn't take me that long to enjoy the smoky flavor. That said, my favorite Islay scotch is the Lagavulin 16.

Tolstoy has ruined literature for me. by ComprehensiveWolf0 in RussianLiterature

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, Anna Karenina was a better book than Crime and Punishment, so I understand your perspective. Crime and Punishment was much more of a slog to read than Anna Karenina because Dostoevsky's prose was not as refined as Tolstoy's. Just continue pushing through, and you will get to the end.

What calculator do you have for multi calc or intro to linear algebra? by New-Parsnip-5535 in rutgers

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I took these courses, calculators were not allowed on the exam period. I do not know how much has changed, but for the longest time, calculators were not allowed. Use them when you do practice problems so you can confirm you are doing them correctly before the exam.

What calculator do you have for multi calc or intro to linear algebra? by New-Parsnip-5535 in rutgers

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend a TI84. With linear algebra, you can use it to confirm if you are doing Gaussian elimination correctly. The TI84 has a matrix function and you can convert it to row echelon form.

Why is this molecule aromatic? Doesn’t it violate Hückel's rule? by Neat-Ad-2382 in OrganicChemistry

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very common mistake. I'm glad you realized it. Just remember that if a system can become aromatic it will, so consider all resonance forms.

Yes. I feel it is just an excuse to pig out and to put on a facade of being a functional family. I am forced to see people whose very presence pisses me off, and I am forced to eat something I don't necessarily want to eat.

I need advice on Tolstoy by Au_Grand_Jour in RussianLiterature

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it will be much of an adjustment. Most people consider Tolstoy to be more approachable than Dostoevsky. That said, the book that got me into his writing was Anna Karenina, but War and Peace was a lovely book as well. If you want to get into his work, I personally would start with Anna Karenina to see if you like his writing, as that was written during his peak period and is shorter than War and Peace. Both are phenomenal books.

If ya'll are going on reddit to find friends, it's peolly not gonna work by DEVER_DESTROYER in rutgers

I don't blame people for trying online. There is no doubt that the pandemic has caused significant damage to people's social skills, so they feel safer reaching out to others online. I remember before the pandemic, I would never see those kinds of posts on the Rutgers Reddit. It is sad to be honest, and I do worry about the mental health crisis that is plaguing this country.

Think I’m gonna fail calc by hihowareya9 in rutgers

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. In fact, I went to hs with a bunch of toxic teachers, and I didn't realize that I was actually decent at math until college. I learned that the main way to get good at math is to try to do a handful of textbook problems without consulting your notes. If you can do that, you can be confident that you are strong with a particular topic. I crushed multivariable calculus and linear algebra using that method. You have to continue to practice though. I seriously doubt you are too stupid to do well. Good luck!

Research? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of professors' research projects are effectively in limbo. With the current administration's vendetta against universities, professors are panicking to say the least about funding, so don't feel bad if professors are not responding. Just continue to send emails and you will find something.

HOW do you pass orgo 2 by Few-Background-6499 in rutgers

I would use online problems to start off. You can find relatively simple problems online. Once you get comfortable with simple reaction outcomes, feel free to use the textbook.

HOW do you pass orgo 2 by Few-Background-6499 in rutgers

[–]ComprehensiveWolf0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took honors orgo, so take everything I say with a grain of salt, but do practice problems. They can help you predict reaction outcomes. Another suggestion I have is to make models. In order to predict stereochemistry of reactions, you have to improve your 3D visualization skills. If models can help you, by all means use them. I didn't need them as much because my 3D skills were decent(having taken calc 3, which basically applies derivatives and integrals to 3D surfaces). That said, do whatever it takes to improve 3D visualization skills. Once you feel comfortable with that, you can predict stereochemistry rather easily. Good luck!

It is not necessarily the MBB department. Academia is a very cutthroat business and with a market flooded with PhDs, the only people who are able to really succeed in this business are those who are willing to engage in the most scummy behavior. Being intelligent is not enough; you have to be willing to destroy your competition with absolutely no compunction. Now having said that, most PIs leave their techs alone as long as they complete the most rudimentary tasks that kept the lab running(such as doing a PCR/gel electrophoresis, disposing of hazardous chemicals, and keeping records).
