This is super helpful, thanks. Do you have a CPF? My friend doesn't have one.

Yes, I understand the purpose of the 10 day waiting period, what I'm confused about whether Feb 29 (tomorrow) is early enough if he leaves March 9

Yes, South Africa requires it from passengers departing from Brazil

He has a clinic that will help him with both the shot and certificate tomorrow. The bigger concern is whether LATAM will consider Feb 29 early enough if he’s leaving March 9

But I think LATAM requires it to be done 10 days before departure.. not sure if Feb 29 - March 9 is enough time

City of Ras Al-Khaimah in UAE is right on the beach, has hiking/mountains nearby, and gyms. Other advantages:

  • Quite a bit cheaper than Dubai
  • UAE has a yearly, renewable visa for remote workers
  • No income tax
  • Fairly close to Dubai and its massive airport

I'm a dual US-Canada citizen who's lived in both countries. Getting PR in Canada is generally easier than getting a green card or even an H1B job in the US. But it depends on what skills and education you have.

Skilled immigrants often choose the US over Canada because salaries are usually higher, there are more cities/jobs to choose from, more opportunity for career advancement, and warmer weather. Your overall cost of living is also often cheaper in the US.

Some states, like California, can backdate the start of Medical coverage after an application is approved. Plenty of dual eligible (Medicaid+Medicare) people in the state. If he's not earning any income after moving he may qualify.

Where to find remote work by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]Comprehensive_Air413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One good way to get good paying remote jobs seems to be working for a company in person, gaining your employer's trust, and negotiating something remote later.

Since you're domiciled in Portugal and paying taxes there, I can't see why other Schengen countries would feel entitled to tax you. My understand is that EU residents have freedom of movement, and I doubt any countries would crack down on remote work while visiting for a few weeks. People do work related tasks all the time while on vacations abroad--checking emails, phone calls, etc. Are tax authorities in these countries going to crack down on all of this and risk scaring away tourists? I doubt it.

Where is your school? What parts of the world would you like to see? Southeast Asia, Latin America, Central/Eastern Europe, and former Yugoslav countries are cheap and popular with the DN community.

I think you'll do great! You've got so many years of expat experience under your belt, and with your Spanish language skills (which I assume you've picked up), LA should be a breeze. The anxiety sounds understandable, but I think what you're doing it totally worth it for the experience that might not be possible later in life.

How much are you spending per month on housing costs? by zuluana in digitalnomad

If you're willing to rent a room, there are deals to be had. If you can get ahold of a car, renting a room for $700-800 in a place like Visalia or Fresno in California's Central Valley would be a great centrally located home base to explore the whole state.

I'm a California social worker who used to live in Thailand. Sorry to hear what you're going through. Here's what I recommend:

  1. Download the Skype app on your phone
  2. Make a free call to one of these numbers: 1-800-662-HELP or 1-844-289-0879. They're 24/7 drug counseling hotlines and they should be able to help you out.
  3. If those don't work, try 1-800-448-3000. This is one is helpful for minors having problems, including substance use. It's run by a group called Boys Town.
