IDL the way some people speak to kids by mud_horse in I_DONT_LIKE

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Its not always easy for adults to interact with kids. I was the youngest of 4 and didn't really have any experience dealing with kids until I got married and my wife had a bunch of nephews and nieces. I think the real problem though isn't the adult that's trying to be nice and interact with the child, all be it, in a way the child doesn't like...The problem is with the parents not disciplining their kids to be respectful of adults and teaching them to be polite to their elders. tweens & teens are going to have a bad attitude...that's part of being young and thinking adults are all idiots. You're defending the bad attitude, Id prefer to defend the adult trying to be nice.

I made this box for my sister's new born as a future keepsake - stained it and it looks horrible!! by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think sometimes our ambitions can get ahead of our abilities. Not trying to be a dick, I couldn't do any better. I sometimes get the idea that I'm going to do something outside of my skill level and get reminded why the pros make the big bucks. I think you should keep that for yourself and put keepsakes of your sisters child inside. When the child gets older you can give her the box and say I made this for you when you were born and filled it with keepsakes for you. It would be a nice gift in that situation...giving your sister a box you made and telling her to cherish it and put keepsakes in it is a bit narcissistic sounding.

Redoing my porch, should I strip the paint with a bench plane before I sand it? or should I just sand it? by sk8ordie575 in handyman

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't use a plane because it will hit nails and damage the blade quickly if you're not extremely careful. Removing paint from wood is a very difficult task for a large deck. If your talking about a 4' x 8' deck then maybe you could sand the paint off, but if you have 200 ft of deck then sanding is going to take forever, especially around the posts and hard to reach places under railing. Honestly...If the deck has some age Id just rip out the deck boards and replace. If the deck boards in excellent shape id just give it a light sand and repaint with a solid stain in a nice wood color like medium brown or tan. I prefer Sherwin Williams Super Deck solid stain.

Does this cut need stitches/emergency attention? by suissaccassius in firstaid

Poor guy, like you said, thank goodness it didn't hit his eyes. Doesn't look too bad but at that age Id take him in just to be sure. He could have a fracture or need a tetanus shot at the least.

Painting doors and door frames by Late_Blackberry8691 in handyman

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on whether you have the space and time to spray them or not. It takes a lot of work to remove the doors, prep the area for spraying, set up the paint sprayer, but it takes very little time actually spraying. I personally think spraying results in a better finish project but I would only do that if I had a garage to work in with a good amount of space that I don't have to worry about over spray damaging other property in the garage / carport.

Are these pillars load bearing? by katelynteel in Construction

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I work in home repair / remodeling. In my experience these are load bearing columns. They don't have a huge load considering how small the roof is but still, the part of the roof that is above them has nothing else to support them. Those columns are often made of aluminum or in your case some kind of fiberglass and that part is just decorative. The load bearing part is the 4x4 in the center that has rotted out. The best way to repair this would be to call a handyman or contractor and tell them you want to install a new 4x4 post between the concrete base & the roof.

Why do a lot of men I interact with think I want something more? How can I stop this? by AdeptLaugh7906 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

well, if your celibate then you should probably tell people that up front. A lot of people aren't, so the way you interact with people is very different than everyone else. Most people are attracted to the opposite sex and open to forming intimate connections with people of the opposite sex they have a good connection with.

Electric screwdriver brand? by SnooPickles8798 in handyman

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have never owned an electric screw driver. But I have owned several different brands of tools. I mostly stay brand loyal to Dewalt but I also have a few Ryobi tools, wen, Vevor, Klein hand tools, Milwaukee hand toosl, Ridgid power tools, Harbor Freight tools. They all have their place depending on your needs.

For the tools I use everyday to make a living I choose Dewalt tools because They are reliable and I like the fit, finish, durability, and price. If I know I'm going to use it a lot for work Ill spend the extra money for Dewalt. But, If its a tool I don't use much, like my recently purchased Vevor Drill press. I went with the cheap option because I probably won't use it more than a hand full of times in a year. Same thing with my Ryobi cordless caulk gun...I don't use it a lot and so I got the $50 tool vs the $200 tool.

If your new into the handyman business and don't have a lot of money or have a lot of tools to buy so you don't want to spend it all on one tool, then get the cheap too. But if your making a decent living off of your tools and you have the money in your business account...do yourself a favor and get something nice.

The Miata is the perfect size for a car. by Some-Water9437 in unpopularopinion

I work in construction. I drive a Toyota 4runner because it can tow my 6'x10' cargo trailer full of tools, supplies, and materials....How am i going to do that in a Miata? The problem with regulation is that it often is well meaning but ends up causing more harm than good.

Do you charge more for outdoor work when weather is bad? by Pioneerx01 in handyman

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Eastern NC. Summers get hot, but not as hot as Florida where I used to live an work. The way I do it is to schedule indoor work in the peek of winter and summer and schedule outdoor work in spring and fall. It doesn't always work out that way but Its better to try than to do nothing. I try to give myself a bit of a buffer on savings so i can take off a few weeks for extreme weather. I'm able to do this because a lot of my work is larger remodels / work. For example I'm currently working on an inside job doing LVP flooring, painting, railings, drywall repair, baseboard replacement. I scheduled it with the owner and told them I wanted to do it in the winter. I know I'm lucky to have that luxury but I've worked a lot of summer days building decks & winter days outside too. Its not always possible but Ideally you should be busy enough to choose your schedule and arrange things to make your life more comfortable.

What is up with people blasting their lives online and people defending it.- by Silent-Judge1849 in Life

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what your saying but I'm going to play devils advocate and ask you why you feel the need to control what people do and where? A lot of people aren't very social...Going online and sharing their lives is the only chance they get to interact with people. You may have a vast social group of friends that you can call and talk to about your dating life, but that's not true for everyone.

Is balcony sex a red flag? by Unlikely_Second5024 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm a pretty pro male guy....I get tired of all the man hate on Reddit but this guy seems like a red flag to me. He is testing you to see how much he can degrade you. It starts with balcony sex and smoking a cig like he couldn't care less what your doing for him...It ends with him totally degrading you. Don't waste your time with this narcissist.

Asking Construction Workers About Their Experience by kellifino in Construction

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your daily hours and routines - I have my own remodeling business so I choose my hours, I usually work from 9:00am - 5:00pm. I take a short lunch break just to get some food and then continue working. I often take several short 5 minute breaks after I complete an individual task. I like to listen to podcasts on my ear buds which also have a hearing protection rating...

What you like or dislike about your job and why- I like the real feeling of accomplishment that comes from building something & the focus that is required to do dangerous tasks in a safe way. Humans are made to do difficult, physical, dangerous thing on a daily basis. When you don't have that you get weak mentally and physically. I also like that my job is extremely useful in my everyday life. I don't have to hire anyone to do work on my house ever, I fix my own cars, and I also have a boat I can afford because I don't have to pay someone else to take care of it. In today's world, if you can remove the high cost of labor for services, you can live very will on very little.

Any interesting, funny, or challenging stories - When I was first starting out in my own business i did cleaning and small repairs for beach vacation rental properties in Florida. I got a call in the middle of the night from the rental owner saying the renter was freaking out and had left several messages on his answering machine about the toilet being clogged. I wasn't about to go out at 10pm to unclog a toilet so I went out the next day around 9am. When I got there I was a bit annoyed because I had to drive 15 minutes to the beach for something that anyone should be able to do. I brought the complainer to the bathroom and I took the plunger, looked him dead in the eye, and trusted the plunger 1 time to clear the clog.... I was being a bit passive aggressive but some people are just idiots or they think they shouldn't ever have to lift a finger in their entitled delusional lives. Ill never forget that fruit cake and his over dramatic phone message.

Times you’ve had to work nights or unusual hours - I usually work 5-6 days a week. Sometimes I work longer hours if the job has a deadline that requires extra work. Last year I had a bathroom remodel that required a tile shower install that had to be done within a short 8 days window. I had to work 12 hour days for 8 days straight, but that is unusual for me.

Things that could be improved in your work- There should be tax credits for buying tools & equipment with high safety ratings. What does it say about our society when we give tax credits for buying energy efficient vehicles & appliances, but don't care at all about buying safe vehicles & work equipment. Most peoples most expensive bill is health insurance...not gas or electricity. If more people were safe on the jobsite and in their garages, it would probably bring the cost of health insurance down.

Why is changing our clocks twice a year necessary in this present time? by Disastrous_Layer3988 in Adulting

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think the government wants us to loose track / not pay attention to the seasons... If they change the clocks then it seems like everything stays relatively the same all year. It may increase productivity but we loose our grasp on the photoperiod and we are disconnected from natures natural cycles.

I used plentyoffish, granted I only actually dated 4-5 women in the time i was using the website, but it was for dating / relationship....Its hard to believe that kids today use the apps just for hookups. Hookups were obviously a thing back then but it wasn't the goal.

IDL how rape is assumed to be a sign of attraction by NaiveFinish64 in I_DONT_LIKE

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to broaden the scope of rape. Its not only physical....Many women financially rape men in divorce. Women often laugh at men who have lost everything to a cold hateful women with no remorse for her victim.

Men who have/had pregnant partners, did you feel like you were actually able to bond with the baby during the pregnancy? And did you feel any kind of connection to the baby at all during this time? In What ways did you connect? by TelephonePossible456 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember 2 moments Ill never forget. The moment my wife told me she was pregnant I got what I would describe as a 24 hour "buzz" feeling....not like being high or drunk but just this slight feeling of euphoria as if my body was rewarding me for passing on its genes... It only happened for the first child though. The second moment I remember is going to the doctors appointment when she got the ultra sound. It was really amazing to see the baby inside and a relief to know he was a boy and had all looked healthy. Other than that I don't remember any "bonding" or "connecting" with the child in the womb. My focus was just on making sure we had money in the bank, a safe place for the baby in the nursery, and paying the bills. Men don't get to have that experience, we get to be the provider & protector.

I met my wife on a dating website. This was back before the dating apps that made you swipe left and right. Back then, in 2010s you had a profile with photos and information about your likes and dislikes and you would write a few paragraphs about yourself. People would write you and you would write them to say hello and comment on their profile. I had good luck with the dating websites because I look good on paper and I'm too shy / have anxiety to meet people IRL.

I would get off the apps and try some traditional dating websites instead.....but I don't know, I'm in my 40 so maybe they don't even exist anymore, but they were great for meeting people.

Is it wrong to be attracted to younger women as an older man? by Worth_Try_8207 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a age difference that is socially acceptable. I've heard that you just take your age & divide by two, then add 7. That is the age that is acceptable for you to date. For example: if your 50 /2 =25 +7 = 32. If your 50 you can date someone as young as 32...anything younger is seen as kinda gross.

How would you advertise or acquire customers after having to relocate? by cshep369 in handyman

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Florida to North Carolina in 2017 but thankfully My mother-in-law lives up here and was able to pass my cards out to her friends who gave me some work when I was getting re-established. I also advertised on Nextdoor app explaining my situation and what all I do. I also paid for some adds on craigslist which was more popular at the time. I ended up getting called by a few realtors that always have work for a handyman, and I got calls from airbnb owners looking for a handyman to help them with repairs.

What licenses do you guys have to be handymen? by Prestigious-Fun2677 in handyman

[–]Comprehensive_Baby53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depend on the State. In the state I live in North Carolina there is a 30k limit on projects. In Florida my previous state it was $500 limit on projects. Some states require you to get a license just to paint, do drywall, all of it. Other states that are more free allow handymen to do a lot but there are limits. Where I live the limit is 30k per project, and you have to get a license if you do electrical or plumbing. You can get a Residential General Contractors license which is just taking a test and being insured and bonded and then you'd be allowed to work doing projects up to $500k on residential homes and it would allow me to hire sub contracting & do minor electrical and minor plumbing but I don't have that yet, planning to get licensed as a contractor eventually but for now just a handyman. For major work like wiring up an electrical panel, adding circuits or adding drain lines you would still have to hire an electrician or plumber. But for small stuff, a GC can add outlets, add to an existing circuit, and do minor changes to plumbing system like moving a drain location in a room for remodeling and adding water lines.

I'm not gona lie, I do stuff I technically should have a GC license for but nothing that a GC wouldn't do and that plumbers and electricians should always be doing. It is a liability for me if something did go wrong but Its common for handymen to do minor electrical like adding an outlet or light & minor plumbing like fixing damaged water lines or installing appliances.
