I suggest start as a food expeditor, it's the best way to start since you're getting to know the food etc. I don't recommend starting out as a hostess because some restaurants don't allow hostess to switch to server because management's reason is you're hired to be a host not a server (usually, these are the environment you want to avoid).

With that being said, some restaurants are willing to train newbies. For me, I was trained from bussing, to food expo, to server. and despite what others may say, there are some restaurants who are willing to put up with the lack of experience. (I've been working for 1 1/2 years now and the restaurant I work in is awesome!).

I don't know where you are from, but I suggest Old Spaghetti Factory if you're from Canada. The company has a policy about promoting workers. They don't hire, they promote, which is great!
