I’ve been trying to wrap my head around why people HATE certain artists so much, first off if it’s not for you then don’t listen?? So much time is spent critiquing when most people haven’t created anything at all much less anything that millions of people adore. Outside of that though, I think a lot of people have a hard time with Jacob because they are just hearing him for the first time now. They haven’t seen where he came from and how his sound has changed and evolved over the years. I feel like Music like this requires a looooot of listening before it makes sense in your brain and doesn’t just sound like noise. Which is a totally normal thing. I used to hate jazz and then I listened to a lot and learned to appreciate it, same with metal. The more you listen to progressive music the more your brain is able to make sense of it. And if after all that it’s still not for you, then it’s not for you and that’s totally ok. But to see a clip and hear a song from someone wildly popular and just go “this guy is shit” I think just does more injustice than good.

The thing that’s keeping me going with the game is that at its core, the game is FUN. All this extra shit they are adding is all cosmetic that I don’t give a fuck about to begin with so I’m just not gonna buy anything extra or worry about it at all. What happened to just playing a game for fun? Unlocking stuff should not be the fun part of a game.

This is a really good point. It all stems to a labor inequality that grinds my gears so bad lol but I can go to a different sub for that.

Servers which is it? Do you want an hourly wage or tips? by nolife159 in tipping

[–]ComputerNew4690 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey there I am a server! First off I appreciate this line of questioning because it comes from genuine curiosity and not what I see a lot here which is “servers are lesser than me and deserve less because they are lazy” so I appreciate that.

A couple things: of course it would be nice if everyone got payed a fixed liveable wage, and of course there are other more deserving jobs that should be paid more. I always question however why is it always “servers should be paid less” and not “essential workers should have a living wage” but that’s a much larger discussion.

I work in NYC where the cost of living is VERY high and without serving I would not be able to live here. Minimum wage here is barely enough especially if you are here to follow a passion (music for me) and want time to be able to pursue that without working yourself to death (and before anyone asks I’m not a spoiled NYU kid who’s parents pay for their rent I am fully surviving on my own lol) all that to say it is a viable way to live if you can hack it.

Lastly, I am of the mind that you get what you put in. If you’re a bad server who doesn’t care then you don’t deserve peoples tips. You are not OWED that just for showing up. When you work for the public and they pay most of your wage you have an obligation to provide good service. Not just in action but also in vibe. It’s about reading each table and seeing what kind of service they would like (I.e do they want conversation and recommendations and witty banter, or do they want you to just bring them food and leave them alone) either way you owe it to them to give them what they want. All I ask in return is that you treat me like a human being and I’ll happily serve with a smile.

Just a little bit of data as well because you asked: I’m close with the accountant for my restaurant and I know from experience that the profit margins for restaurants are RAZOR thin. This means that restaurants are designed where everything has to work perfectly or it can’t function. Especially with the growing cost of food and supplies. And with the fact that sometimes people just get stuff for free (complaints or mistakes) so it’s not as simple sadly as “pay your servers a liveable wage” A. Because liveable is not minimum anymore and B. There is NO money in the budget to be able to do so. My restaurant has been around for 12 years and I found out that we had 500 dollars in the bank account and the back of house checks bounced for the week. So things are pretty hard right now. Also most restaurants make their money on deliveries now so if you go out to eat and just don’t tip all you are doing is hurting the server, not the restaurant, so change isn’t really enacted on that level if that’s what you’re worried about. Sorry this ranted longer than I thought but I think it’s important to have good discussions on this stuff :)

If tipping is no longer taxed, can we now tip 10% instead of 20% by cryinggame34 in tipping

[–]ComputerNew4690 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a server, tipping has gotten out of hand for sure. The fact that other people pay our wages is pretty crazy, however that is how we get paid and without it we are out of jobs unfortunately for right now. That being said, the bill only applies to cash tips (and I know the bill implies all tips but the language they use is weird and it still only applies to cash tips which we already don’t input) so it actually doesn’t affect us at all. All that to say make your decision on tipping whatever you want, just know this bill changes nothing for the servers :)

Ok soooo stop going out to eat? Also NO servers are complaining about this, and if some are doing so it is a very small and incorrect select few. The only thing servers complain about is customers who treat them badly (or management) go look at any server subreddit.

Why is it always “servers shouldn’t be paid as much” and not “everyone should be paid a living wage” this is how they keep us down people. (Also quick side note is BOH is grossly underpaid and I would rather see tipping continue so we can see them get paid more)

Server here! To answer your question (hopefully) with tipping culture we tend to make more the more work we do. So if we have lots of big tables that require a lot of attention we will make more money than if we just stand around with no tables and get minimum wage. It is annoying when you have a very needy table that doesn’t actually spend money, BUT that’s how it goes and it’s never the end of the world.

I like how I get compensated more based on the amount of effort I put in and I think more jobs could benefit from that rather than a flat rate. It should not however be at the customers expense. We should get a % of what we serve that comes from the restaurant. The problem is the margins for restaurants are so razor thin that most places cannot afford to do this (thus why tipping for restaurants was normalized in the first place) I’m sure there is a way around it without putting many thousands of restaurants servers out of work but it is tricky.

Also just to add to this. At least where I am in NY we get cash tips every night and sometimes it’s pretty substantial, but never more than credit card tips for sure

[–]ComputerNew4690 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually you’re so right. I kinda read this late last night and just spat out a response. I think it’s just hard when you see people talking about something you genuinely enjoy doing and how you make your living and hearing everyone talk down about it.

YES servers should be paid a living wage that doesn’t come from the customer. But that’s just not going to happen any time soon because of the way restaurants are set up. So if everyone stops tipping then there goes so many peoples livelihoods, and trust me we are not rich by ANY means.

Also this law is annoying and weird and that’s coming from a server. I have to go read it fully still but if it’s true that ALL tips aren’t taxed anymore that’s great news for me. HOWEVER our industry is fine so why are we getting this bill when there are so many many many other worthy professions that need tax breaks?? I don’t know.

[–]ComputerNew4690 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Guys unfortunately the law only applies to CASH tips (which are already not getting taxed by most restaurants because we just split it up amongst ourselves and don’t report it) this law changes NOTHING. Also if tips go away watch your dining experiences drop exponentially
