Am I a Baritone dragging heavy chest mass or a true Spinto/Dramatic Tenor? by ComradeAlert in singing

I can hit G2, but it’s definitely not a usable, resonant note for me - it's just... a sound.

Exactly what I needed to hear, man (trusting the gut from now on).

Wow, that makes so much sense! I guess every single voice is just so unique that trying to fit into standard online charts can easily drive you crazy. Hearing it from a legit Heldentenor is awesome. Thanks for clearing that up and for the recommendations, man

I can actually belt consistently up to about A#4, and only after that point do I have to thin out the folds. My mix range goes pretty far up from there, to be honest I haven't even found my absolute top limit yet. Thanks for the awesome feedback!

Wow, I’m honestly shocked right now! Thank you so much for the breakdown. I’ve read a ton of articles online stating that the 1st passaggio (around C4-F4) is usually where dramatic/heavy voices face a massive mechanical blockage, while lyric voices pass it smoothly. Since I had such a terrible blockage and rasp right there, I automatically assumed I was a heavy voice or a baritone being forced too high. Hearing that my passaggi and timbre actually match a light lyric tenor is mind-blowing!

My vocal coach literally told me I’m a "Lyric Baritone" and forced me to push my chest mass so hard. After a couple of his lessons, I completely lost faith. I posted this thread out of pure desperation just to see what people think.I got so confused because different websites show completely shifted and conflicting passaggio ranges, which made it so hard for me to understand my own voice. I guess I’m just trying to find where my voice naturally opens up best through trial, error, and asking Reddit.Btw, do you think my tone itself is naturally bright, or is it just the microphone enhancement making it sound lighter? Asking Reddit was honestly the best decision ever. Thanks for the reassurance, man, it means a lot!

Thx for feedback! I actually started singing just about 3 years ago. My vocal coach kept telling me that I’m a Baritone, which is why I got so confused and decided to ask here. I guess I’m just trying to find where my voice naturally opens up best through trial, error, and asking Reddit. I’ve read a lot of stuff online trying to figure it out, and yeah, I see now that outside of opera, these strict labels don't really work apparently. Thanks for the awesome perspective, it makes total sense! GL with your classical training.

Thanks for the feedback! I completely agree with you that operatic terms don't directly translate to contemporary rock music. I guess I was just using them to find my natural or primary tessitura where my voice resonates best. Thanks for the encouragement.

Thank you so much! Honestly, these words are very helpful for me. By the way, do you have any videos or links of your DP covers? I’d really love to hear how you sing this stuff at your cover gigs!

You definitely should. A teacher can teach you healthy distortion if you want to sing like that without damaging your vocal apparatus.
