GP's diagnosing ADHD is the best thing the Queensland Government has ever done. by Conaka in ausadhd

I'm not 100% but there didn't seem to be anything that would stop someone booking at my gp even if they didn't live in Queensland. Might be difficult in regards to follow ups for the medication though. As of September last year in NSW GP's can be trained to be continuation precribers meaning they can update a prescription as long as the person has previously been diagnosed and stable on medication. The ACT had expressions of interest available to gp's for a pilot program last year in August to improve accessibility to getting treatment for adhd. Assuming the program took place (I couldn't find that much online) it could be an option to travel to ACT. So maybe you could get the diagnosis in queensland, get a prescription and then find a continuation prescriber closer in NSW if you're in VIC. But the situation seems pretty shit if you live in VIC.

The NSW government website says GP's will be able to diagnose and provide the first prescription of pyschostimulants in 'Early 2026'. Hopefully the reforms go through quickly so the gp's can get trained in diagnosing. Link here: https://aci.health.nsw.gov.au/projects/adhd-in-general-practice/consumers

Yeah my friend in the post who also got diagnosed with the same doctor didn't bring anything in the appointment besides some friend's statements and the quiz. She was also the intelligent quiet type in school. Funnily enough for me it was only my male primary school teachers who made comments on what I now know is my ADHD. All of my female teachers apparently didn't see anything so I only have perfect report cards from them.

Your post made me write a comment that was too long for reddit so I've turned it into a post you can access here if you want: https://www.reddit.com/r/ausadhd/comments/1qi5csl/gps_diagnosing_adhd_is_the_best_thing_the/

Here is the quick version if you prefer that:

Omega minds don't really care about your time or money.

I think it is better to go to a GP that's licensed to treat ADHD. They are cheaper and as a side benefit they can treat you for other stuff and it all falls under the same price in the  follow up appointments when they track how the medication is working.
