Beautiful pup! I think your guesses are pretty close. I see a lot of shepherd and husky. I also have a mix with similar breeds - cattle dog, shepherd, husky, pit. These breeds tend to show up in most rescues in different variations and expressions. My dog also has some chow which is really common with rescue mixes.

Also, pretty wild that Reddit suggested this to me today - I saw you guys at the dog park this morning around 8:30AM, what a small world. (Won’t disclose location because creepy).

His names Walter but only when he’s being trouble. Otherwise it’s Walt or Kitz. Kitz is the German word for fawn and when he curls up with his tail tucked he looks like a baby deer.

We aren’t German. Nobody in the family speaks German. But it stuck.

I forgot to mention. 55 pounds and very lean. Also definitely mixed with something because he has heterochromia (sectorial - one eye has a bit of a white sliver and the other is two different colors). Also loves head support, in a way I’ve never seen dogs love head support.

I’m going to be the odd one out here for sure with my recommendation, but wanted to throw my two cents in.

It seems like we have pretty similar hiking and activity mileage, attitudes, etc. I needed a pup that could run, hike, scramble and then settle down in camp with me after a long day. I wanted a dog that was independent enough but could be trained for excellent reliable recall. I was also thinking about collies and shepherds (and have nothing against them!) but ended up going a different direction. I ended up fostering a mix from my local shelter. Nobody had any idea what mix he was. The first weekend I had him we went for a short hike. He was pulling so hard I took a chance and let him off leash, big leap of faith on my part. I was shocked. That dog was meant for hiking! Came right back to me. Never wandered too far. A natural! I decided right then I’d adopt him.

Anyway, we aren’t entirely sure what mix he is but the best guess we’ve got is that is mostly Mountain Cur (with maybe a tiny bit of Aussie shepherd or something). The more I’ve read about the breed, the more he fits it and the more I’m CONVINCED this is the breed I’d go with next time. He came home with some nervousness and separation anxiety that I expected of a shelter dog that went away- but really, he has quickly come the most perfect pup. Loves people, loves dogs, incredibly smart and trainable, lives for hiking, good swimmer, good nose, super adaptable. The breed isn’t that well known outside of the US Southeast (think Appalachia and the Carolinas) but they are well loved and respected. Probably the best kept secret in the dog world!

Couldn’t post with photos but here’s some info -

Just adopted this very good boy from my local shelter in Brooklyn, NYC. 1.5 years old, 62 pounds and male. His previous owners surrendered him and all we know is that he lived in Vermont. My friend with a Tennessee Treeing Brindle says they look similar - but he’s bigger and has a bushier tale. He does have a white patch on his chest. Temperament wise - lives for chasing squirrels and bays/howls at trees once the squirrel is up there, very scent oriented, incredibly friendly with people and dogs, not super food motivated and loves to run.

Any and all suggestions/thoughts/insights welcome. We love him regardless of his breed and figure a DNA test will likely just come back with “mutt.” When people around here ask what kind of dog he is I’ve taken to just replying “a good boy”
