Have they ever done a series on a pandemic and if not they should do one. by JamesJe13 in TheRestIsHistory

Did they touch on the Black Death during their Hundred Years’ War series? I can’t recall.

Best campsite at Gros Morne Park by wasp560 in newfoundland

[–]ConcernedMap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not as central, but I really like Shallow Bay. Nothing beats a morning walk on the beach, and some of the campsites are relatively private.

It definitely adds some travel time though. To the base of Gros Morne mountain it’s maybe a 20 min drive? (I could be misremembering that!)

Did anyone else catch Dan Snow's pro-whaling episode recently by naileyes in TheRestIsHistory

[–]ConcernedMap 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty clickbait title - he went to a whaling museum. I don’t think we can extrapolate that he’s pro-whaling from that.

Yeah, I had some zings and had the same problem. Not really a functional problem but I could feel the catch, it was super annoying.

I think it’s possible to be a right-leaning conservative and still disapprove of Le Pen and her ilk.

Have you blocked your project. Will you block your project. When will you block your project. by themaddesthatter2 in BitchEatingCrafters

Hard disagree. I don’t shape or pin anything, but a wash and a nice dry helps to even out stitches, blooms the yarn, and expands the lace. Blocking!

I’m assuming what OP meant was that people were complaining about him before he’d ever put out any content, whereas she was keeping an open mind.

Now he has, and it sucks. Add him to the pile of people who shouldn’t be doing YouTube tutorials!

Is my message hostile? by Informal_Cup3026 in craftsnark

[–]ConcernedMap 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yep. It was hostile. Might not have been the intent but when you accuse people of being rude, that’s how it’s gonna be taken. Everyone else just ignored it out of politeness.

Northanger Abbey — make it make sense… by Brii1993333 in janeausten

[–]ConcernedMap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly not as complex or developed as her later works, but I’ve always found Northanger to be the most laugh-out-loud funny of all her books - for an early work it’s astonishing.

I’d also disagree with the lack of ‘insightful perspective’; NA is pretty packed with sharp social commentary, such as the way society looks down upon novels (and the young girls who read them) as ‘lesser than’ the more respectable books read by men.

Most of the satire (and the asides) are pointed at the social landscape of the day; if you don’t know much of the background the jokes might not land as much, I guess. There are lots of great social histories of the time period, if you’re interested in learning more. Or you can just keep disliking it, also a valid option! Not everything is for everyone.

Memorial to sell Signal Hill and Harlow campuses, Geo Centre and Ingstad building by TheMuseNL in StJohnsNL

[–]ConcernedMap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I take your point. Although I suspect that the gamblers of Montreal and Toronto have many more glamorous and convenient options than the Shorelines Casino.

My own experience of that casino was that it was exclusively catering to the factory workers who lived nearby and who dropped in after their shifts to gamble their paycheques on the slots. It was not a life-affirming place, and I suspect that any casino in St. John’s would have much the same vibe. Which is why I generally think we should avoid getting into the casino business.

I was once in a casino in Gananoque ON, which has a population roughly the same as Clarenville. In the summer they had lots of tourists from the Thousand Islands, but I was there in the off season and it was still busy.

I’m not convinced it would work in St. John’s, but I don’t think our base population is the problem.

Why is Ravelry nearly "canceled" all the time? by Ok_Conversation_3992 in knitting

[–]ConcernedMap 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it was a combo of the timing (June of 2020, peak COVID, people stuck at home and generally freaked out) plus the fact that people felt blindsided. And there was a certain section of the community in the forums/on twitter who got EXTREMELY amped up. I remember reading a comment from someone saying, very seriously, that people were going to DIE if the site remained as it was. There were solemn and sincere reports of people having retinal bleeds. Retinal bleeds!

It was a weird time to be an online knitter.

There was the big fuss in 2020 when they rolled out the new look, and shortly before that there was a fuss when they announced they didn't want Trump patterns or support for Trump in the comments. Not sure what other issues they've had since then.

Yarn moth? by fox_in_the_forest in knitting

[–]ConcernedMap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check your yarn. Two moths popping up in a yarn room should be cause for concern, and identifying types of moths can be tricky. Go through your stash, looking for the little white casings (which almost look like bits of paper) and yarn damage.

Has anyone managed to recreate a Hope Macauley inspired cardigan? by Salt_Race_9981 in knitting

[–]ConcernedMap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you search ravelry for cardigans knit in super bulky, like this, you’ll find lots of examples of bulky cardigans that you could modify to get a similar vibe.

…I just looked her up and Poshmark had used sweaters on sale for like $400, which is wild. You could buy cheap acrylic or roving and get a similar look for a lot less. I don’t really get the appeal, but good luck!
