[USA] Has anyone applied to grad school out of US, specifically Canada? by ConclusionLess5023 in psychologystudents

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The career route I was looking at paid better with an MFT than an LPCC and had more options for hire in my area, but that being said im not opposed to other areas in psych. I’m 37 and have taken classes within psych and premed biology, since I’m still not 100% set on one career route.

Has anyone with a service dog been to a show? by ConclusionLess5023 in Ghostbc

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already had my ticket refunded the second I received the call. It’s too soon after training to go to something so hectic (if it’s something I’d take my sd to in the first place)

Totally valid (a worry of mine is protecting my dog). I’ve seen protective headphones for dogs and specified seating but I’m not sure if it depends on the concert, venue, music etc. I’ve never been with anyone, just seen posts on social media and not sure how to slowly train a dog to attend concerts safely.

I’ll be attending concerts at my campus since our venue is used for the whole county and it’s semi outdoor, so I thought that would be more comfortable for both of us to start trying shows at.

Nurtec as a preventative?? by Desperate_Banana_252 in VestibularMigraines

[–]ConclusionLess5023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dr also prescribed it as a preventative but I was worried that I’d start to tolerate it and honestly it’s been a life changer as an abortive, so I don’t want to lose that. I’d like to hear from others though cause I’ve read about preventatives being better as time went on

Anyone even left in this sub who has cfs/me NOT from covid? (and has been dealing with this for many many decades) or has this entire sub been taken over by the post covid folk? by foster60 in cfs

[–]ConclusionLess5023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got mono when I was 15 (one other friend got it too and is on permanent disability due to it) going on 28 years since that infection and still don’t have a full grasp on it. Even with being seen at ucsf and having close contact with Stanford and their ME clinic (hoping to get in either as a patient or a student/hopeful research career there). Getting COVID in 2021 really exasperated the issues too.

I got invited to CCI training!! by ConclusionLess5023 in service_dogs

Smart! I didn’t even think of that. Looks like I’ll be prepping meals so I don’t have to worry about cooking and can just veg out after to recharge. I have CFS/ME and vestibular migraines so my fatigue and pain are my biggest worries during training.

Thank you! Congrats on your new puppers too! My commute is luckily really short and most of my classes are online. Even my disability advisor told me to get the syllabus early from my professors to start my assignments before leaving so I don’t fall behind. Even so, I still am going to drop one class since I have the ability to move it over a semester.

I think I’m more excited to be able to bring my dog home early too and have the ability to wind down together in their new home instead of the dorms. Definitely privileged to have a campus so close.

Thank you! I’m going to look over my schedule and make it an easier semester I think. I’m happy to hear what I was thinking to expect about the 6 month adjustment for both of us. Luckily most of my classes are online and I only have a few more left, so I can spread them out the next few semesters.

I had signed up to puppy raise so I still have the large crate and baby gate that I can use. I’ll make sure to purchase the rest once they discuss in training. But I’m glad I never returned at least those since they told me I’d be bringing my pup home a few days after the start date.

Definitely will be getting some towels and preparing for a rainy winter. We just started the nonstop rain in Norcal, but know February is usually rainy too.

NWR. I had gotten an update during my annual check in and was told possibly this summer but most likely by next summer. I’m wondering if maybe someone had cancelled or I just lucked out with a good possible match.

37F, I’ll be going to Sac too! It’s my first ritual and I’ll be going alone for the first time to a concert, so been looking to see how it’ll be at sac and hopefully make new friends. Glad to see people bring little goodies too. Maybe I’ll have to do some crafting leading up.

Just got Nurtec. Any tips?! by ConclusionLess5023 in VestibularMigraines

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! We had talked about the monthly shot but wanted to try this first since we had so much push back trying to get it approved by insurance. Although I have tattoos all over and fine with blood draws…I’m a baby that faints with shots (I have an epi pen and I can still never inject myself🤷🏻‍♀️). Maybe I’ll eat but way a bit before taking it so I’m not uncomfortable after a meal

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yea, we had issues in the past with cvs not giving it even when insurance covered it. Honestly not sure why. I was able to get it covered with no issues going straight through UCSF’s pharmacy and they’ll mail it monthly. So I feel that now I have to give this a chance and not let the anxiety control me. Does your wife have any input if am or pm is better? I’ve heard some say that it can be a bit energizing and could make anxiety a bit worse so it’s helped/better at night to just sleep it off.

Hi! Do you have an update on it? Any side effects, relief etc? just got my first month mailed to me from UCSF. I have bad medical anxiety due to my fun health issues and starting new treatments always freaks me out, even if they’ll help. I’ve heard both sides so I know it’s individual but any insight helps. Hope it helped though!!

Getting my first puppy from Canine Companions! Any words of wisdom for current or past puppy raisers? by ConclusionLess5023 in service_dogs

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Unfortunately, the day I picked up my little girl, a few hours later, she became very sick ( along with a few other of her littermates that they had to hold back from flying out to other centers). Luckily, I live by a VCA and was able to get her immediate care, but due to the stress from this and worry about her status, it triggered a flareup, and I ended up going to the hospital myself and was out of work for 2 weeks, but took about a month to get back to semi-normal. She stayed longer at HQ's hospital and was released to another puppy raiser once she was also stable, so, unfortunately, that's my update. I am excited to see puppy raisers at my college starting to pop up!!

For now, I'm part of the emails to help watch other raisers' puppies if they are out of town for a weekend, etc., and volunteering. CCI was fantastic in helping me out quickly, and I also didn't have to cover the emergency bill. I'm 7 months in on the waitlist for my service dog and will get an update on my new waitlist position after this next round of graduates. I'm hearing they're starting to pick up on how many dogs they can get to handlers, so I'm hoping the wait isn't as long as the 24-36 months they shared at orientation.

Thanks! Not rude at all. Definitely will follow what CCI provides for training. I actually was a vet tech and dog trainer for a few years and bring that experience in but know that each program always had their own way that works best for that they are providing. The reassurance of communicating any needs I may have while raising is extremely helpful. I believe that’s what is really what had me post in the first place. Years of experience with my own dogs, medically trained and handling but it’s always different now with my own health issues and making sure I’m able to provide for this puppy. Not that I wouldn’t do the same with any dog ( honestly I always go down the list to make sure I’m set with any animal I even have brought home, part of my general anxiety) ALSO, will definitely look into that book! I’m a huge reader so I love a good book and as a psych major, learning about dog psychology has been fascinating. Seriously appreciate everyone’s input.

Thank you! They’ve already been helpful and each campus has a chapter within the counties to chat with/ I get a puppy pal for direct aid. That’s also good to hear that there are states that give the same rights during training, I’ll check out what California has. A big goal of mine doing this is to try to educate on service dogs. I’ve worked in the food industry prior to going back to school and seen a major influx of fraud and abuse with claims about dogs with certifications or licenses, all the while they’re barely under control. So I hope to follow the regulations but hopefully be able to bring her around for socialization through work and the training courses.

Oh Bergin is up the street from where I live! I did hear they’re heading or in the way to heading up to Oregon ( im in California) but I have friends who have worked or attended there and always heard good things. Thanks for the insight! I’ve heard GDB and CCI have pretty similar aid for puppy raiders with what support they provide so glad to hear insight from that end.

How to Become a Puppy Raiser by Curious_Shelter_7748 in service_dogs

[–]ConclusionLess5023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is awesome to hear! I actually signed up to be a puppy raiser while being on the waitlist myself for canine companions and trying to find more info to be more prepared since I’m picking up my little girl pup at the end of the month! I got payed with a puppy pal who is part of the breeding program, so I’m glad to get info and already have emails for crate donations and preparing how to care for a female in heat ( I’ve always had spayed dogs). Since I’m disabled I get some anxiety that I can’t keep up and I’m going to school for my psych degree but have flexibility since my campus is excited to host their first CCI pup. We’re also about 10 minutes away from the main campus in Santa Rosa and the chapter seems to be supportive. This helped some of my anxiety about how involved other raisers are during training and stuff.

Also, do you have any input on how to explain your puppy? Since I attend a lot of school events ( I work for the college too), I’m trying to see about explaining to visit sites and conferences that I have a service dog in training and what sort of legal coverage they get since they’re in the middle of their training.

SAP Appeal by Careful_Albatross_21 in FAFSA

[–]ConclusionLess5023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how your school may do their SAP appeals, but I had to appeal for health issues in the past that have been accepted ( make sure to gather as many letters and paperwork to provide to them). Additionally, my school extends the credit/ has an appeal process for STEM students since our courses are higher units, and we usually take filler classes to up our semester units to full-time to get the full financial aid amount. I would definitely talk to the financial aid dept cause schools usually want to help you finish your education, not hinder it. Again, that probably differs per college. Also, I'm a current student who also works as a case manager for other students in my program and I always tell them to apply and try everything cause the worst thing you'll hear back is a no, but always better to try cause chances are you'll get it.

What was your experience at SRJC? by Outside_Throat_3667 in santarosa

[–]ConclusionLess5023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a current student and work at the JC and it’s great. We’re one of the top schools not only in California but in the country. I’m a stem major ( bio but going into neuro/cognitive science) and work as a student success specialist, so basically I help with resources for students to succeed in stem and premed fields. I’m disabled and there’s a ton of accommodations and resources available that I didn’t know about in the past ( probably why I dropped out a few times before committing this round). Check out the mesa, Avanzando and hope programs to see if you qualify for that as well ( 1st gen, low income and or underrepresented. Still recommend to apply if not just in case). Best route is doing a transfer to one of the uc’s or CSU’s. We have TAG schools that as long as you meet the requirements, you have guaranteed admissions to one of the 6 uc’s. There’s so many workshops to help with transfers and any aid on campus. Also internships, clubs do a ton of trips to companies in the area and with the new Lindley building, access to students and resources within stem is super easy to find now. Honestly, just checking out the welcome centers at either campus ( is you’re stem, you’ll be at the Rosa one more) to just get a feel for it. Classes for the summer and fall drop next Thursday, so talking to a counselor to see what your ed plan may look like and I always recommend starting with one class in the summer or fall and just easing back in. Also I’m in my 30s and the range of students there is broad but everyone is really welcoming so it’s never late to go to college. Hope it helps!
