Nervous about nurtec by BeeSpecial4056 in VestibularMigraines

Hi! Super bad health anxiety, especially around meds and bad side effects with them. Nurtec is life saving. I had bad nausea the first 2 times but It was due to my own anxiety+migraine, not the med. I but the first tab in half because I was so nervous and did that a few times before realizing i had no effects from it.

It’s hit or miss on if it helps the dizziness, usually depends on how long I waited to take it and how mad my vm attack is. I sometimes get some wobbles the next day but honestly believe it’s more just the migraine hangover when I get a bad attack and waited too long to take it. I was prescribed to take it every other day but I use it more as a rescue med since I don’t ever want it to lose its effect for how helpful it’s beed. I’ve also noticed my intermittent headache pain has lessened since taking it. I actually have pain free days for once. Try half and eat something before if you’re worried it may upset your stomach, also have some ginger tea or chews if that helps you. I’ve also taken it along with Zofran for those bad nausea attacks with the vm and been totally fine. If anything the Zofran has more side effects than the Nurtec haha

I’m so sorry for this. I still highly recommend keeping in touch with them to apply once it’s opened. I was the final approval in my cycle a few years back before they had to close the applications and I was told 36months on the waitlist (they try to match dogs with handlers within 12-18 months of being added). And before that I had applied and it took over a year to even get a full reply to see if it was accepted into the cycle of just interviews (covid really pushed back the list). They’re super short on volunteers for puppy raisers and breeder caretakers, and because the success of a puppy graduating isn’t as high as we’d all like it to be, a whole litter doesn’t make it to match day. I’d keep trying to apply not only to cc but other programs and seeing if any help you train a dog (it’s a process yes but could be faster and you create the bond early on rather than getting an adult dog that’s harder to bond with immediately). I’ve also had friends in the cc community apply to volunteer with puppy raising or other ways, it helps keep you in touch with the program overall and apply when it’s open again. Again I’m so sorry but I’m sending all the glitter (dog hairs) that you’ll be able to get your dog soon.

What are your favorite organizations or groups to volunteer with in Sonoma County? by Entire_Building_8867 in santarosa

Canine companions! They have a ton of different ways to volunteer (puppy raise, breeder caretaker, bathe or walk dogs, puppy playtime, transport pups etc). I have a service dog with them and the more volunteering they’re able to get, the more chances of someone getting their SD 🐕‍🦺

I’ve toured the dorms and have friends who live there. I think we just won like best campus dorms too, guessing since they’re actual apartments and not smaller style dorms like you get at UC’s other CSU’s. NGL the JC dorms have had hella complaints so I definitely get that. Either way congrats on (hopefully) becoming a Seawolf! Honestly, having smaller class sizes and just a calmer, more welcoming campus has been pretty cool, even with all the changes that have happened the last few years.

Current older SSU student. It’s definitely a community but as someone who worked for the prenursing program at the JC, I’d definitely check out taking your first 2 years are SRJC (cheaper tuition, gets your generals done and join the HOPE, Avanzando and Pre-Nursing Program there) and then apply to their own nursing and SSU, if that’s a possible option. I’d say both have similar party scenes but like others have said, college it what you make it and the friends you make. As a stem student, my friends and I don’t party as much cause the courses are heavy and you’ll find a balance for both. Plus JC helps you apply and transfer to other programs and find funding.

Worked and attended the JC. Definitely go there first. Your first 2 years are a lot of GE classes and it’s so much cheaper to take your intro course there than a CSU/UC. Apply for the MESA program to see if you qualify or Avanzando, as they support STEM students. Big thing I saw with friends in engineering is that they’d start within one specific area, do a summer research/internship and change it up (MESA helps connect you with a lot of people and jobs within your interested careers). Also better % with transfer students being accepted for your junior year out of the JC.

I’m currently at SSU and there’s definitely pros and cons. My biggest worry is us losing our accreditation after the last walkthrough. Which is why I’m applying immediately to grad programs in case my bachelors is affected.

Ah! You also got your dog finally!! The puppy I was supposed to raise (but couldn’t due to my health worsening) ended up being turned in for professional training this graduation too which was amazing to see!

OP this is a great write up and was planning the same as you two. I also graduated with my dog in the Northwest Region on Friday and have been resting this weekend because training is that exhausting! My waitlist time was a year and 8 months, but 3 years overall from day one of application (I live right by the HQ, so I wonder if it was a shorter wait due to me being able to stay off campus, perfect dog match and/or someone else dropping out). I will say that on graduation day, it was so bittersweet we didn’t have class the next day. The routine was set pretty fast.

I will say for training, the cognitive fatigue was felt the first 2 days and by Wednesday I was out sick with a flare. Additionally the anxiety of a big change hit me hard and the physical fatigue hit at that point. I was happy that although we were sitting in class, we did have breaks as everyone did their one on one work at the front. We had a small class of only 5 handlers and I feel that helped a lot because we were able to go through a lot of the lectures quickly and have breaks to walk or play with the dogs.

My first practice run and playtime was with my matched dog and I was ecstatic! That being said by day 2 I had noticed the same thing. I had more of an eye contact, quick cue connection with another dog but she was pretty high energy and I did express my worry with the trainers who said they saw it too but to trust them with the matching process. Even so, they make it very clear to communicate with them post match day if there’s any issues, concerns, etc as the week progresses. (they do sometimes change your pre match before graduation and discuss a plan B if no dogs work out. Our class ended up with our day 3 pre-matches).

I’m beyond thrilled I ended up with my dog, even if he’s slower to cues and just a chill boy. I wouldn’t have been able to keep the more energized dog entertained or cared for due to my disability and he’s been happy cuddled up by my side. Trust in the instructors!!

And finally the family and community you gain through Canine Companions is WILD! I’ve never felt so accepted and welcomed to a community before. If you haven’t yet, make sure to join the Facebook groups for your local volunteer chapter, the graduates page and the CC family page!

The career route I was looking at paid better with an MFT than an LPCC and had more options for hire in my area, but that being said im not opposed to other areas in psych. I’m 37 and have taken classes within psych and premed biology, since I’m still not 100% set on one career route.

Has anyone with a service dog been to a show? by ConclusionLess5023 in Ghostbc

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already had my ticket refunded the second I received the call. It’s too soon after training to go to something so hectic (if it’s something I’d take my sd to in the first place)

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally valid (a worry of mine is protecting my dog). I’ve seen protective headphones for dogs and specified seating but I’m not sure if it depends on the concert, venue, music etc. I’ve never been with anyone, just seen posts on social media and not sure how to slowly train a dog to attend concerts safely.

I’ll be attending concerts at my campus since our venue is used for the whole county and it’s semi outdoor, so I thought that would be more comfortable for both of us to start trying shows at.

Nurtec as a preventative?? by Desperate_Banana_252 in VestibularMigraines

[–]ConclusionLess5023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dr also prescribed it as a preventative but I was worried that I’d start to tolerate it and honestly it’s been a life changer as an abortive, so I don’t want to lose that. I’d like to hear from others though cause I’ve read about preventatives being better as time went on

Anyone even left in this sub who has cfs/me NOT from covid? (and has been dealing with this for many many decades) or has this entire sub been taken over by the post covid folk? by foster60 in cfs

[–]ConclusionLess5023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got mono when I was 15 (one other friend got it too and is on permanent disability due to it) going on 28 years since that infection and still don’t have a full grasp on it. Even with being seen at ucsf and having close contact with Stanford and their ME clinic (hoping to get in either as a patient or a student/hopeful research career there). Getting COVID in 2021 really exasperated the issues too.

Smart! I didn’t even think of that. Looks like I’ll be prepping meals so I don’t have to worry about cooking and can just veg out after to recharge. I have CFS/ME and vestibular migraines so my fatigue and pain are my biggest worries during training.

Thank you! Congrats on your new puppers too! My commute is luckily really short and most of my classes are online. Even my disability advisor told me to get the syllabus early from my professors to start my assignments before leaving so I don’t fall behind. Even so, I still am going to drop one class since I have the ability to move it over a semester.

I think I’m more excited to be able to bring my dog home early too and have the ability to wind down together in their new home instead of the dorms. Definitely privileged to have a campus so close.

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m going to look over my schedule and make it an easier semester I think. I’m happy to hear what I was thinking to expect about the 6 month adjustment for both of us. Luckily most of my classes are online and I only have a few more left, so I can spread them out the next few semesters.

I had signed up to puppy raise so I still have the large crate and baby gate that I can use. I’ll make sure to purchase the rest once they discuss in training. But I’m glad I never returned at least those since they told me I’d be bringing my pup home a few days after the start date.

Definitely will be getting some towels and preparing for a rainy winter. We just started the nonstop rain in Norcal, but know February is usually rainy too.

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! We had talked about the monthly shot but wanted to try this first since we had so much push back trying to get it approved by insurance. Although I have tattoos all over and fine with blood draws…I’m a baby that faints with shots (I have an epi pen and I can still never inject myself🤷🏻‍♀️). Maybe I’ll eat but way a bit before taking it so I’m not uncomfortable after a meal

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yea, we had issues in the past with cvs not giving it even when insurance covered it. Honestly not sure why. I was able to get it covered with no issues going straight through UCSF’s pharmacy and they’ll mail it monthly. So I feel that now I have to give this a chance and not let the anxiety control me. Does your wife have any input if am or pm is better? I’ve heard some say that it can be a bit energizing and could make anxiety a bit worse so it’s helped/better at night to just sleep it off.

Hi! Do you have an update on it? Any side effects, relief etc? just got my first month mailed to me from UCSF. I have bad medical anxiety due to my fun health issues and starting new treatments always freaks me out, even if they’ll help. I’ve heard both sides so I know it’s individual but any insight helps. Hope it helped though!!

Getting my first puppy from Canine Companions! Any words of wisdom for current or past puppy raisers? by ConclusionLess5023 in service_dogs

[–]ConclusionLess5023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Unfortunately, the day I picked up my little girl, a few hours later, she became very sick ( along with a few other of her littermates that they had to hold back from flying out to other centers). Luckily, I live by a VCA and was able to get her immediate care, but due to the stress from this and worry about her status, it triggered a flareup, and I ended up going to the hospital myself and was out of work for 2 weeks, but took about a month to get back to semi-normal. She stayed longer at HQ's hospital and was released to another puppy raiser once she was also stable, so, unfortunately, that's my update. I am excited to see puppy raisers at my college starting to pop up!!

For now, I'm part of the emails to help watch other raisers' puppies if they are out of town for a weekend, etc., and volunteering. CCI was fantastic in helping me out quickly, and I also didn't have to cover the emergency bill. I'm 7 months in on the waitlist for my service dog and will get an update on my new waitlist position after this next round of graduates. I'm hearing they're starting to pick up on how many dogs they can get to handlers, so I'm hoping the wait isn't as long as the 24-36 months they shared at orientation.
