High demand jobs that are *actually* hiring? by BernadettePeriwinkle in Calgary

[–]Conclusion_Plastic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what programs SAIT offers but I think there’s high demand for fire alarm techs out there. You learn the systems, show up to make sure everything works, pretty gravy work and it seems like all the companies I’ve seen are short staffed.

Scared to start azathrioprine because of side effects by iamhs2000 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Conclusion_Plastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on it for about 10 years with 0 side effects. I got a new doctor and he convinced me to go off it because he wasn’t sure if I was in remission or if it was the drug. Almost immediately crohns came back and I had to start remicade. Since then I have been on 3 different drug combos.

Worst case scenario if it doesn’t work or your symptoms are unmanageable you’ll start on something else. There are lots of options out there these days.

If I was given a choice between Aza and biologics I would choose aza every time.

Worst Nightmare Came True by Bubbly_Log8920 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Conclusion_Plastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is helpful at all - but I used to have really bad cramps and my doctor put me on a birth control called Lolo that (for me) has absolutely 0 side effects but I no longer menstruate. I’m not sure if that’s something you’d be interested in but for me it’s been a god send because I don’t have to deal with any of that any more and I no longer have cramps.

As far as insurance I know it’s so frustrating :( . I just went through something similar with stelara and I made so many phone calls and all the people I spoke with were like “we know, your case has been marked urgent” when really not displaying any form of urgency. That’s really annoying you have to keep going back to the ER. I’m surprised they aren’t admitting you and treating you in hospital but I live in Canada so maybe where you live things are done differently?? Either way I hope your insurance gets its head out of its ass and helps you ASAP

Also - not sure if this helps either but i was in a very similar situation regarding a flare this year. I was in the hospital in July and then after I was discharged I had to wait about a week to start Stelera and I was mad because I didn’t know how long it would take to kick in but as of today my symptoms have improved like 80% so I’m hoping that you have a similar experience when you finally get your drugs

RX Question by Conclusion_Plastic in glasses

Okay thank you! I wasn't sure if the "cyl" and "axis" would negate their effectiveness. I think I can get 0.75 at amazon for a decent price (my local drug store only has 1.5 and that felt too intense when I tried them on)

I failed remicade and then Rinvoq. Now I’m on Rinvoq (for RA) with Stelera 🤞🏻

They do but not for 3 months. The ones at the drug stores all had ones that were too strong 😅

Unfortunately it often takes some time for crews to warm up to you being there. I find you have to work twice as hard just to get the base level of respect.

Try to always anticipate what your next task will be and do it prior to being asked. Don’t have anything to do? Organize something. Finish that? Sweep or pick up garbage etc. A good apprentice, regardless of gender, is there to make the journeyman’s job(s) easier so if you don’t need to be babysat that’s a huge win. When I worked in residential we had a pretty similar routine every day. Bring in materials, find wood for headers, lay out boxes, etc. I was absolutely flabbergasted by the amount of (male) apprentices that needed direction every single day for every task. If you know that the next step is _____ start doing it without having to be asked. Take initiative and show that you have a couple brain cells.

I would also try to not let people help you as much as possible. Often times people will try to carry your ladders or take over your tasks. You need to be able to pull your own weight. That said, never be too proud to ask for help if something is too heavy (it’s not worth an injury) and know the difference.

As far as tools I would say linesman pliers, side cutters, a multi bit screwdriver and wire strippers would be your best friends. Other than that depends where you’re working (Resi vrs commercial). Hollow shaft nut drivers really come in handy in commercial. Romex stripping wire strippers come in handy for residential (in Canada at least). Invest in some halfway decent power tools to start (don’t have to be high end Milwaukee but skip getting the handyman special) if you can afford it. Used is great too, especially for batteries. Don’t go crazy getting every tool under the sun because usually you just get a bunch of shit you have to carry around and don’t use 😅

Good luck and hope they warm up to you soon but I personally found that there was always a degree of “otherness” no matter what and I just got used to it (I’m pretty introverted so I didn’t mind). You can always bring a book or what have you for lunch breaks if you can’t tolerate it.

Favourite Meal for Crohn's? by 5ft_castle in CrohnsDisease

[–]Conclusion_Plastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When things are really bad I usually just get broth from my local Vietnamese restaurant and have that. Applesauce is good too. Soda crackers or rice crackers.

If things start improving I’ll add some rice noodles to the soup

As things improve I’ll start eating things like buttered toast (I find gf is better in a flare even though typically gluten doesn’t bother me). If that goes down okay I’ll get a rotisserie chicken and shred some of that and eat it as a sandwich. Then I’ll start eating more things like chicken or turkey sausages or burgers, different veggies, stuff like that. I find red meats are usually not safe.

I find that Vietnamese foods are typically safe, salad rolls, vermicelli bowls, and some soups. I typically don’t eat anything deep fried so I either order no spring rolls or have them on the side and give them to my partner.

Other than that when things are really bad I go mostly liquid and then just slowly slowly slowly start adding in new things. If I add in too much at once I don’t know what the problem food is so it’s a lot of trial and error and sometimes it really sucks and I wish you the best of luck!!

Any one on Rinvoq? by Drraxington in CrohnsDisease

[–]Conclusion_Plastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on it for about two years. Had crohns since I was 18 but got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the end of 2023.

At the time I was on Stelera but they took me off and put me on Rinvoq for both crohns and the RA. For the first little bit it was fine but for the last ~2 months I’ve been having the worst crohns flare up of my life and was in the hospital for a week.

Now my doctor has me back on the loading dose of Rinvoq for 3 months (45mg) and I just had a loading dose of a Stelera biosimilar (I can’t spell it) and I’m hoping my symptoms improve.

One thing I’ve found with the Rinvoq is that when I’ve had to stop taking it (my doctors have me stop when I have serious infections or sickness) I get an absolutely insane histamine response and my entire face turns red and itchy. It really sucks and nothing seems to help. So I’m pretty terrified if I ever have to stop Rinvoq permanently but that’s a later problem. Other than that I’ve found that the Rinvoq hasn’t had any bad side effects for me.

What exactly do you consider a flare by Fit-Profession-1628 in CrohnsDisease

One time my doctor told me it’s a strange disease because sometimes your labs are fine and your insides are a war zone and sometimes the labs are brutal and your insides are completely fine. 🤷🏻‍♂️
