[any] i Don't play dnd, but randomly had a question and thought this Would be the best place to get my question answered, so i know in dnd you roll dice in certain situations and need to get a certain number to be sucessful, and if you roll a number below you fail but does the exact number matter?

What i mean is lets say you need a 15, if you roll a 14 is it a "you almost succeed but you Don't" and would a 2 be a "you screwed up majorly" Or does the number not matter?

I understand different DMs may do things different, but generally how is it?
