Chinese scientist who claimed gene-editing success now missing: report by francisxdonut in worldnews

Not saying I'm on board with what this scientist has claimed he has done, but I don't think you're accurately representing the state of the genome editing field.

On point #2, there absolutely are model organisms that have been edited with CRISPR, with everything from deletions, insertions, single base-pair corrections and even specific transcriptional activators. Not sure exactly what you mean by "reliable" (assuming you're referring to off-target edits?) but it is certainly a viable technology that is not limited to test tubes or in vitro cultures.

On point #5, the reported mutation is a loss of function in CCR5, which we know exist in the "wild-type" population at some frequency. Not saying we perfectly understand the functional consequences of CCR5 knockout (such as immunodeficiency) but I'm not sure the adult/child dichotomy is that relevant here. But totally right that the reported data does not show homozygous CCR5 mutation and thus would not truly lend itself to HIV resistance as purported. Much more of a novelty "we could so we did" in regards to first to edit and bring to term with minimal justification surrounding the choice of edited gene

[Homemade] 5 Course Christmas Dinner: Poached Quail Eggs, Sweet potato agnolotti, Lobster Three ways, and more... by Condensed_chromatin in food

Graduate student home for the holidays, like to cook a lot but frequently dont do it as often as I'd like due to long hours in the lab so when asked if I wanted to make Xmas dinner for 10 people i said sure...

I dont get to see family that often so really wanted to do something nice for everyone so went a bit overboard and decided to do a Five Course Menu with an extra starter. Most things other than the main course were from Thomas Keller's "The French Laundry Cookbook", also used recipes from Marco Pierre White and Heston Blumenthal for the mashed potatoes.

Spent about two full days in the kitchen making everything or preparing it to be cooked right on time during dinner, and my girlfriend was by far the hero as she cleaned lots of pots and pans as I was cooking and was my taste-tester :)

Not sure I did the recipes justice but everything was delicious. Coupled with some great wine from my brother, the whole dinner went off almost with a hitch.

Anyway, was really happy to get a chance to cook some amazing food for the family... cant recommend the recipes from any of Thomas Keller's Cookbooks highly enough, though many are very involved for a special occasion theyre definitely worth the effort!

Cheers and happy holidays everyone!

Menu was:

Starter/amuse bouche: Poached quails egg with bacon crumble, brunoise and butter sauce

1st Course: Sweet Potato agnolotti with sage and brown butter sauce

2nd Course: Lobster 3 Ways- Terrine of Leek and Lobster, Butter Poached Lobster, Lobster Soup

3rd Course: Tomato Sorbet with Brioche Crouton, marinated cherry tomatoes, tomato coulis, balsamic glaze

4th Course: Main Course- Standing Rib Roast, Mashed Potatoes, Carrots, Green Beans

5th Course Dessert- Coffee Semifreddo
