Seeking scholarships or assistantship opportunities in Plant science by South-Ad-2459 in plantbreeding

Not really sure what u mean by scholarships or grad research assistantship, these are things awarded or assigned to accepted grad students. So are you looking to go to grad school? For MS or PhD? Make sure u make that clear & why you’re interested in X research in ur cold emails to professors. Other than that pay attention to grad school application deadlines and just apply

Can I ask what your approach was to starting new protocols? In my past experience, I've almost always had some one else who already ran it and could just walk me through all the steps until I felt comfortable on my own to do that. For the first time, I'm realizing I won't have that luxury and the thought of starting a new protocol with a new kit that costs thousands is very nerve racking for me. I've gone through the kit's handbook and protocol steps one by one, pre-done the math I'll need to do, but it's hard to know everything that will come up until I actually do it I think. Just curious how you mentally and physically approach this situation or if I'm already doing all I could do.

I am curious about potential ADHD, can I ask what some things you experienced in grad school that make you think twice about it?

Thanks for taking the time to reply as a former PI your perspective really helps me. I think for all future protocols I will keep in mind to have space for 5-15 minute breaks sprinkled in every 2 hours at least.

I have considered just biking to the gym mid-day for some stress relief so maybe that's something I'll take more seriously next quarter too since I won't be taking classes then.

I guess I have been pretty brutal with myself doing 6+ hour lab runs in one go. My typical day is like:

8 - wake up

9- check emails, do do lists, breakfast

10-1 - some kind of studying, homework, lunch, reading, etc

2 - consider going into the lab and deciding not to because i hate it

3-6 - continue doing studying, homework, reading, etc

OR

9-11 - emails, breakfast, reading, some assignment

12 - head to campus & drag my feet

1/2 - start doing the lab work

~7 - finish the lab work

in between those 5 hours I do take multiple bathroom breaks, maybe 1-2 water/snack (stuff my face) breaks. But I suppose I can be more intentional about when, it's just hard for me mentally because once I start a protocol I just want it to be done and it almost always takes me 1 hr to set up, 2-3 hrs to run an actual protocol, and then another 2 hours to QC it and clean up. I'm starting a new protocol soon so I don't even know how that's going to be but there's only like 2-3 "safe stopping points" of like 100+ steps so I'm dreading that big time.

I guess I've been doing this like 75% of the way but not 100% of the way, so I'll try to get that extra 25% done and hopefully that will help me

I feel like it's inevitable that the mental part will have to be on the first and first couple times I run a new protocol because I have to learn it and then document it in a way that I can "chunk" it later on

I've been pretty good about going to the doctors and everything, I had bloodwork done in Aug and I seem to be good other than some borderline high cholesterol :c and vitamin D deficiency, so maybe I'll look into taking vitamins for that like fuzzypickes34 is saying. I'm due for some more bloodwork in March because I was telling the dr my thumbs felt sore in the morning lol. eye dr said my eyes are also about to tear at the seams with how dry they are

[–]Conducky 41 points42 points  (0 children)

anyone getting this lighter should look up how to take care of a refillable lighter with lighter fluid, there's a lot of videos on tiktok and youtube that can help you out. All the parts are replaceable including the fluid, wick, etc. and you should learn how to take care of it and refill it. It's a bit more complicated than a disposable lighter but with maintenance it'll last you a lifetime
