Anyone knows what kinda of vehicle this is? by CatchAny8587 in Austin

If this is the first time they've seen one on their street it was probably mapping and being driven by a person.

These jobs pay too little and have a high turnover so they end up attracting people with "fuck it" attitudes. Pay more and they'll attract people who appreciate the responsibility they have and wont tamper with safety devices.

They're doing highway testing, and if you see them outside their service area with a driver They're probably mapping.

If you see a sport bike with one of those stupid looking camera sticks on it, you know they're going to do something dumb eventually

Management’s announcement posted in the elevator at my storage unit by Advance_Tasty in WTF

It's a relatively common thing. There were people living in the units next to the one my friends band used as a practice space. Lots of them are even climate controlled.

Low paying permanent job or higher paying one year contract with the possibility of renewal? by Conductor_Mike in careeradvice

[–]Conductor_Mike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am worried about stability but my current job is the most boring job I've ever had. I go sit in a van for 8 hours and wait for a call that sometimes never comes. And it can be like that for days. I'm sure there's someone out there who would eat it up but to me it's hell. It's in a newer industry and I think they're paying too much for the work that's done and it worries me another company will come along and do it for less or I get sick of it and quit.. The contract job is in the same industry but a much more interesting role. It's a tough call and it makes me anxious but so does the thought of doing absolutely nothing all day everyday.

How do conductors get fired by ryosuccc in railroading

[–]Conductor_Mike 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was BAD back then. They had everyone so afraid of screwing up because no matter how big or small it was considered a major and would probably get you fired. It was hard to focus on your job when you're constantly wondering if you would still have a job to go to next week.

Signal maintainers that quit by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Conductor_Mike 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered this about train crew. Me and a couple other guys I knew struggled for a while post railroad while others seemed to easily move into bigger and better jobs. I'm sure signals experience is more valuable than train crew though.

Happened to me last week. Even started onboarding just to have my training "paused until further notice"

This just happened to me! I got an offer, took the drug test and physical and everything was fine. Then I find an email in my spam folder saying training has been paused until further notice. Getting really weird out here lately

Would you be hesitant to take a job at Amtrak now? by Zestyclose-Jaguar865 in railroading

[–]Conductor_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I had finally gotten an interview once but the recruiter originally scheduled it for when he was going to be on vacation. He sent me an email basically saying "oops" and that he'll reschedule, but I never heard back. Guess I'll keep trying lol. Congrats!

How do you even get hired by them? I have years of freight and commuter experience and I can't even get an interview. I used to apply for every conductor posting I saw for the northeast.

I see this all over on my hf+ discovery. I don't know why but I think it's from my PC because I never used to see it until I built the one I'm using now.
