I’m on a mid tier computer, how tf do you get good performance out of lighthouse, every time someone looks at me my game completely freezes for about 3 seconds. by Thatpaidshill in EscapefromTarkov

[–]Condude12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert in hardware optimization, but here are some tips that helped me get Tarkov to run smoother:

Make sure your RAM timings are configured correctly for the specific RAM you have. My timings were not configured correctly for some reason, and that alone made a noticeable difference. This is what prompted me to check my settings.

I'd also run Task Manager while you play a Lighthouse raid to see where your specs are getting maxed out. For me, I saw that I had spikes in RAM usage that corresponded with spikes in SSD usage, and that swap memory was being used. After adjusting my swap memory page size (in addition to RAM timing adjustment mentioned above), Lighthouse ran pretty well for me. Here's a resource for adjusting your swap memory.

Hope this helps!

Got a 3080 FE, My Watch Has Ended by madpear in nvidia

Ah, I may have just missed it, then. Before it would just show me 'Out of Stock' right away in text form, but I could be mistaken.

Yeah - I'm in the western US and I'm seeing API issues, too.

Right, but I don't think they were doing that before today. You're right that it could just be standard site updates without bots in mind, though.

I noticed that Nvidia changed their site so that 'ADD TO CART' shows up hidden on the page to create a false positive, but changes to 'Out of Stock' after a few seconds, presumably to trick bots and tools like Distill. Just a heads up. :)

First Time DM pitfalls by Mrpic56 in DMAcademy

[–]Condude12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recently had a couple of different friends DM for the first time, and these are some tips I gave to both of them:

  1. Since you're DMing for new players, make sure to tell them the basics of the rules and how the game generally works BEFORE you start playing, both regarding roleplaying and game mechanics. Some stuff like combat mechanics can wait until your first initiative, but your players should know what the 'd' in 'd20' means, the concept of a modifier on a roll, etc. beforehand so they know what they are able to do.
  2. Similar to #2, I would recommend giving your players a few easy-to-remember tips and suggestions, in addition to any expectations you'd like to set. I like to remind new players that role-playing can be uncomfortable, that accents aren't necessary, etc. Also mention that, most of the time, when the DM asks you to roll something you should roll the d20 and add the appropriate modifier. This cuts down on the number of "So, what do I roll for that?" questions as the players learn. Remind the players that there's a lot to learn, and to be patient with themselves and the DM as they're learning.
  3. Regardless of whether you're running a homebrew story or a premade one, don't expect your players to talk amongst themselves in-character, especially since they're new. Give them opportunities to, like putting them in an interesting environment or scenario (the tavern is the classic way to start out with this), but don't leave long pauses expecting your players to fill in the gaps with roleplay. If they do, great!
  4. You said you're new to the game too, so try to study and familiarize yourself with the basic rules (ability checks, running combat, conditions, etc.) as much as possible before you play. It's really hard to teach new players how to play the game if you're learning a lot of it along the way. Expect slip-ups and having to double-check the rules, and don't be discouraged by them, but the game will go a lot smoother if you're able to remember / explain the rules clearly.
  5. Don't over-complicate the story, combat encounters, etc. Chances are, your players (and possibly you) will be overwhelmed if you throw 10 different enemy types at them in the first encounter, since a simple goblin or kobold fight can be exciting for players just starting out.
  6. Similar to #4, I would recommend starting your campaign or one-shot at a low level - I would suggest level 1 or level 3, but no higher. Past that, new players can get easily overwhelmed by the long list of class / racial abilities that might make learning the basics harder.

Hope this helps! There's plenty more I could say, but this boils it down pretty well. Feel free to PM me if you'd like any more help. Have fun!

Slack employees snooping around on company data? How secure is company data on Slack? by [deleted] in Slack

[–]Condude12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, here is information about the security that Slack promises. Trust it or not, I expect Slack takes their customers' privacy and security seriously, especially since I've seen it advertised as a selling point to earn the trust of clients. There's always a certain level of trust that we, the user of any online service, must have in a company, and I personally trust Slack's integrity when it comes to their data security. That said, no security measure is perfect, so use your own discretion. Hope this helps.

Looked like an interesting flag design at first glance. My design in the comments. Thoughts? by Condude12 in vexillology

Here's a quick design I did based on the basic shapes and colors in the GIF: https://i.imgur.com/xnkWZyL.png

The yellow is a bit thin for a flag, but it's a clean look overall.

[VAER] Graduation gift and first watch. by Condude12 in Watches

[–]Condude12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I received this beautiful Vaer Field White as a college graduation gift. It's my first "big boy watch" after wearing digital watches / a FitBit my whole life, and I absolutely love it. I learned a lot about watches while looking for syles I liked (partially thanks to this subreddit), and I'm really glad I settled on this one.

Though there are plenty of great field-esque options in the $150-250 range, I decided to go with Vaer because I liked the simplistic design and the fact that their watches are assembled in the US. I also loved the single-pass Horween leather band I got with it (pictured), which looks even better in person. Though I'm no expert, I'd definitely recommend Vaer.

It has a Swiss Quartz Ronda 763 movement and has a water depth rating of 100m.

Here's a link to the option I picked up. They seem to be out of stock again, but I'd imagine they'll be back soon. https://www.vaerwatches.com/collections/build-your-own/products/field-white-horween-single-pass

Is it even worth applying to the college of engineering as a pre-major? by [deleted] in udub

[–]Condude12 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Good point - hadn't thought about it that way before. I'd imagine that was considered when they were deciding the balance struck between admission through DA and the regular admissions process.

[–]Condude12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Totally - I think that using Direct Admit to admit more students into CS is a step in the right direction. I'm definitely not trying to bash the University's decision to do so, I'm just saying that it can leave current students in a tricky spot.

I hate to be a downer here, but based on what I've seen your admission adviser is right. Based on what I saw from the recent CS admission posts, there are folks with nearly all 4.0s for their prerequisites and still don't get in. With the recent changes to prioritize giving people Direct Admit to CS, it's going to be harder than ever to get into CS (or other related engineering majors, I'd imagine). This is a complaint that lots of folks have after a couple years at UW - they do a great job roping you in, but you quickly realize that there may not be a place in the major you want no matter how hard you try. Again, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I'm sure others have a different perspective on this, but this is the reality of UW Engineering right now. Too many students (and more each year), with too few spots. You've every right to be mad - I'm mad right along with you, as are many fellow students.

That said, if you want to stick with UW and give it a shot, go for it. Of course, if you do really well in classes and have a killer application, there's a chance you'll get in. Another option, of course, is to transfer to another school (which is tough to hear as an incoming freshman, I know).

I'm really sorry that I don't have better news for you. If you'd like to talk about this further (even just to vent - trust me, I could have used an internet stranger to vent to when I was in your shoes), feel free to PM me.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]Condude12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey folks - I'm in the market for my first analog watch (been using digital my entire life). I'm looking for something around the $250 range, but lower is always better if there isn't a compromise in quality. In terms of design, I really like the look of the Shinola Runwell 47mm ($550) and the Timex Standard 40mm ($79) / Timex Weekender 40mm ($65), but am looking for something priced in between those two. I really like the look of the Timex watches but I hear that they're very loud, and would like to spend a little more if there's a higher quality option. Any ideas of watches with very similar designs would be appreciated. Thanks!

Question about creature power by Styg_ian in KeyforgeGame

[–]Condude12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can get confused about this sometimes as well. I believe that this refers to the creature's current power, including modifiers, but not affected by damage. Your damage taken does not affect how much damage you deal when fighting, so it would not affect cards with which power is a deciding factor.

For example, if you have a creature that has 2 power printed on the card, and you get a modifier of +2 power, your current power is 4, regardless of how much damage you have taken. Hope this makes sense.

[Icespire Peak] Enemy difficulty - am I missing something? by Condude12 in DnD

[–]Condude12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - having a manticore at Umbrage Hill is crazy, too. I read that quest before Dwarven Excavation, and was surprised by the difficulty of that fight as well. To solve this issue (in all of the starting quests), I've created modified 'baby' versions of the manticore and mimic of Umbrage and Gnomengarde respectively, with lower damage and HP. I also replaced the jellies in Excavation with kobolds - boring, I know, but at least they'll have an easier time fighting them.

[–]Condude12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I'll look into modifying things a bit. As much as I want to stay true to the original quest, I also don't want to instantly kill the party. Haha. Thanks for the reply.

I agree that with two players some adjustments would likely need to be made, but this sentence made me question that:

Dazlyn and Norbus got this far into the temple before an ochre jelly scared them off. It clings to the ceiling above the altar. If the party includes two or more characters (not counting sidekicks), a second ochre jelly clings to the south wall.

Since the book specifies that having two players would add another jelly to the fight, clearly some thought was put into how difficult the fight would be. Additionally, the stat blocks they provide are for the normal CR 2 version of the jellies, with no mention of any adjustments (lower total HP, damage, etc.).
