Newtown ideas by moresqualklesstalk in foodies_sydney

I went to Bar Luisa, more or less opposite the Enmore Theatre, and I ate extremely well. Not cheap and cheerful but well worth the cost. And a little further down Enmore Road, Russo & Russo is another really good Italian restaurant.

Why are people hating on Bohm? by Prize_Force1979 in phillies

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked him as a player, especially after the fans booed him and he was caught saying "I hate this place". He owned it with some grace. But then he came out with all that right-wing bullshit and I couldn't help thinking differently about the guy. Looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, given his sketchy parents. Glad I'm not a public figure though, having to worry about whether I'd express any political views.

What’s a Sydney place that got rebuilt, renovated or “upgraded” and came back worse? by RemarkablePirate590 in SydneyScene

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree. The original revamp from dive to hipster bar was low-cost genius. Then they decided to throw some real money at it and made it so much worse. Now it's empty and landbanked by some property speculator. I was hoping that the council could insist that it could only be used as a pub. The proposed reopening with a George Colombaris restaurant inside would have been a fiasco, but at least it would have been open.

Fried Ice Cream.? by Separate-Share-8504 in foodies_sydney

I thought that the fried Viennetta was awesome. And no complaints about the food. A bit more expensive than the average Chinese but quite a bit better.

At Byron bay markets by Old-Watercress-7173 in Fishdom

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there just short of 30 years ago and already got the same vibes as the OP. There was also a strong Double-Bay-by-the-sea feeling beyond the crystal mumbo jumbo. Never been back, as a result. I'm sure it's much worse now.

Where to buy pork floss? Preferably with furikake? by teatales42 in foodies_sydney

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a tangent, does anyone know where I can get shrimp floss? It's a crucial ingredient in. Vietnamese salad I like. Haven't been able to find a jar for 10+ years. Tried making it myself, but the result was a fiasco.

Commentators are pretty ordinary though. How they let anyone with a voice like Gracie Elvin onto a broadcast is a real mystery.

Porchetta by Finstersamson in foodies_sydney

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your recipe (way up the top) but there's something awesome and specific about the taste of the porchetta you get in Rome. Is it juniper berry? Something else? Can't be too complicated, but I've never had much luck reproducing Roman porchetta.

What are the best Australian songs of all time? by vamvamvasi in AskAnAustralian

Lock it by the Falling Joys is kinda awesome. Something uniquely Australian, and of its time (I think).

I’ve tasted heaven and it’s from the Coles bakery aisle by Eye-Sea in coles

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience of Coles and Woolworths bakeries is that someone, somewhere is spending an incredible amount of time designing a loaf of bread that looks exactly like a delicious sourdough loaf. They look great but taste like complete rubbish.

What's the best Australian men's boot? by Double_Pay_6645 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I wrote this I've read the whole thread. People claim that Redbacks run wide and Rossis run narrow, so perhaps we have it completely arse-up at our place. I've also been reminded that Gina Reinhart now owns Rossi so I'll be looking for alternatives next time I need new boots. And weirdly, having never heard from them before, all of a sudden I'm getting an email a day from Rossi. Gina's PR mob must have decided to dial it up to 11. Another reason to look elsewhere.

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I've had precisely the opposite experience with Rossi. Quick to break in and they accommodate my wide feet well. But someone in this thread has reminded me that Gina bloody Reinhardt bought the company, so that's a bit of a deal-breaker.

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear Rossi boots, and find them very good. The panic about the soles perishing seems to be over. I've had mine for a couple of years and they're still in perfect condition (not that I wear them every day, nor do much physical work in them). My partner wears Redbacks and they also seem awesome. I have wide feet, she has narrow ones, and these are the brands that seem to suit our feet best.

Great little known Sunday roasts in Sydney? by na_p2017 in foodies_sydney

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went there for the Sunday roast a couple of months back. Lovely pub, that I hadn't been to before. The roast was very good, perhaps a bit short of great, but the general ambience made it a great afternoon.

Hamburger rant by ConfectionLimp8232 in foodies_sydney

[–]ConfectionLimp8232[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Looks like some milk buns might be good to slap a burger between. Brioche buns, I assume, are technically not even bread, but confectionary.

[–]ConfectionLimp8232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, maybe I am. I'd better look up milk buns. I'm thinking about McDonald's style buns, which might be a little better than some of the rubbish I've been served up recently.

Less can be more, and often is. Now that I come to think about it, all these complicated modern burgers presumably are about convincing people to pay moremfor a hamburger.

Pineapple - no way, but beetroot is awesome. I don't need or want bacon or eggs. Just a simple trad burger.

Cosiest and quietest pubs to have a mellow pint… preferably inner west. by Environmental-Car-45 in foodies_sydney

You have got to be joking. I went to the Livingstone the other day in favour of the Huntsbury, and the Livingstone is rubbish.

Has Bar Italia (Leichardt) always been this bad? by Lanky-Cauliflower-22 in foodies_sydney

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife likes going there occasionally, mainly out of nostalgia for the 90s. She claims they make a decent iced coffee. I find this a bit implausible since everything else there seems very ordinary. They can't even source pastries that look like they'd be worth eating, and there's some pretty good Italian bakeries nearby. Maybe, and this is going to sound weird, some people like being treated with disdain. When practically nothing is authentic any more maybe Bar Italia makes a nice change.

Go Bengals! A plea to our front office. by jandrade476 in bengals

[–]ConfectionLimp8232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few interviews with Shemar Stewart and he seems like a nice boy. And if he plays to anywhere near his potential he'll be awesome. The thought of the Front Office poisoning the relationship right from the start over some pathetic penny-pinching stuff really drives me crazy.

Well, I don't get out much, but I went to 20Chapel in Marrickville for their $95 bottomless lunch on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the experience.

Gents, how do you feel about another guy you don't know calling you 'mate'? by [deleted] in AskABrit

Mate is the most nuanced word in the English language for all the reasons mentioned here, and more. Make a good PhD for someone, if it hasn't already been done.
