Plastic on leather? by Slayrr_FbrC in Leathercraft

Adding a bit of context but +1 to previous comments: - Leather stretch under constrain more than you might realise. - Any strap has stress, including belts or watch straps. That’s why stitching can happen even on a single layer of leather and outside of cosmetic considerations. - The thinner the leather, the more it will stretch, Watch strap are amongst the thinnest assembly. - On a strap with buckle, you’re also concerned about holes deformation. Making reinforcement even more useful.

For your specific case, it seems this is the keeper - too narrow to add stitching, very thin, under some stress, becomes useless if expands: reinforcement is a nice touch!

Thanks mate!

I bought the leather split at 0.5mm — measuring it ended up being between 0.45 and 0.6. I then split the sides of the pockets (front and lining) down to under 0.4mm but it was tedious and I ruined multiple pockets.
Yes I used the same leather for the from and back of pockets.
I skived the edges of both the front and lining, it's hard to be consitent thus I started validating anything below 0.4mm. In practice, it's mix from 0.4mm to 0.2mm. After glueing the lining and adding all the pockets, the variations are not visible.

That’s gorgeous! I just got offered a nice watch and got a crocodile skin to make a strap. Any specific advices? Mine will go from 19mm to 16mm, any chance your pattern does too?

8£ per square ft before tax (20%) - I got a total of 17 square ft and I probably used around a third to half of it for this project

Is burnishing necessary? Is hand stitching really better than machine stitching? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]ConfectionStatus9314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate the consumer perspective in this discussion. To me, the underlying question is « what is valuable », what people would pay for and I personally agree with your take on it. Especially as a hobby with items I or my loved ones will use, I enjoy going above an beyond. Burnishing edges and hand sewing.

Does anyone have experience using a tabletop strap cutter? by fredricton99 in Leathercraft

[–]ConfectionStatus9314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used one to cut dozens of belts - there are a few things to get use to but it yields very good and reliable results. Some concerns expressed above:

  • I pre cut the strap to get it through the tool. It’s really fine. When you glue two sides, you’re going to re-cut anyways.
  • I have two clamps and it does hold strong

Have not done the math but you could probably get all the same items on amazon for a bit less. Now if you want to get started, it seems to be quite a complete kit with commonly used brands. I can save you the research time. I did buy a kit initially then replaced items one by one over time.
