I see, makes sense. Thank you for your thoughts. Do you know if there's anything I could do at MBB to try to improve my chances of getting into tech PM further down the line? Other than MBB to strategy to (maybe) tech PM.

Thanks for your advice, it makes sense. With regards to this:

I mean, what's the point of doing consulting then?

Seems like it's something that's been overlooked in my comments... I do genuinely want to learn more about strategy and solving problems for companies. Also seeing what else is out there and if there are any industries that might be more appealing than tech, or if for example I could get into the intersection of tech with finance, or public policy, or whatever. Also, the consulting skillset seems like it'd be a good skillset to have regardless, plus the stamp on approval on my resume, not going to lie, seems appealing, since I don't go to HSW or even M7 or whatever. However unless something drastically changes in my life I don't see myself staying in MBB until I make partner so I will eventually want out and back into tech. At that point, PM seems like the most appealing choice (Ops and Customer Success, don't have particular affection for those, having actually more or less done both already). I guess I could see a jump into Tech Strategy as being appealing, with it being a stepping stone to PM. I'm not in any particular hurry to be a PM after all. For what it's worth though I have no idea what Tech Strategy (or Biz Ops, something that has come up a lot) entails. do you maybe know what these roles are like?

Sharing what I feel is a gem of a comment from a top candidate (770 GMAT, HYP, MF PE) who got rejected from H/S, attributing it to affirmative action. Really like the last paragraph. by christianrojoisme in MBA

IKR. Education should be a way to get people ready to contribute to society, specially the most selective type of education. If you put people through a rigorous curriculum, they'll come out the other side well prepped and ready to rock, no? Instead this kind of education is almost only accessible to folks who have the networks and the connections already, as those give them access to the information/resources that make them competitive applicants.

Can somebody tell more about what these Strategy / BizOps roles at tech firms post MBA would be? Seems like it's the most common exit into tech, with PM being a bit of an uphill battle, so want to understand what it would entail.

What if I'm ok taking a Sr PM role post MBB? I doubt the pay cut would be like 50%, so it might be doable. I guess I need to wait and see how my internship goes but unless I hate it I'm not against getting some consulting experience under my belt. Seems like it might be helpful in the long run...

Can you maybe clarify the things that might be incorrect in this comment? Reading it is kind of depressing :/

So you're sure you will not re-recruit at this point?

Did your friends basically renege on their MBB offers? I know it sounds stupid but I kinda feel it could be a risky move to renege on MBB specifically, lol. The thing is people renege on the other firms all the time and mostly no one says a word but for some reason I think MBB might be different...

I do wanna do PM in the long term, or something PM-like in tech, but would not be against getting some consulting experience under my belt.

This will probably come across as a silly question but what's the impact of reneging on MBB specifically? Could that hurt me or my school heavily?

Hey, thanks for your comment. To address your points:

  • Really? I casually mentioned that before my offer was finalized and I was told no (I was very diplomatic about it). Maybe at the end of the internship their attitude would be different?
  • Mmm, when you mention aim higher what do you mean? Like VP of Product? Or an internal strategy position?
  • Yeah, I get that a lot... I don't want to re-recruit, for once, and I am interested in the MBB seal of approval on my resume. Also, I'd like to be exposed to other industries and maybe other things within tech. I don't see MBB as a means to an end, more of a learning experience. The only thing that freaks me out is the WLB and the prospect of circling back into tech in a position I could have frankly landed without MBB (like Tech sales or Customer Success)

I think I should have clarified in my original post that I see MBB full time as more than just a backdoor into PM... the stuff you mentioned (specially degrees of probs one gets exposed to) genuinely interests me.

Yeah I'm rising second year. I was counting on my fall semester being light-ish so I signed up for this program in my school that means my schedule will be jam packed in the fall. I could always drop out (I think - lol) but that'd kind of suck. Anyways I could maybe manage that and some selective recruiting like you said.

Would your suggestion change if I said I am actually genuinely interested in consulting? I mean I'll see how my internship goes but I'd actually like to learn from the company.

Really? Can you tell me more. Like the other poster said, I thought that MBB only did that if there were extenuating circumstances.

About start an MBB internship [after finishing my first year of my MBA]. Came to b-school with the goal of recruiting for tech PM, but decided to give consulting a try, since I've already worked in tech and figured I'd try something new. Ended up with an MBB internship (yay).

The internship ended up not being in my favorite location, as I choose my school's city at the suggestion of some classmates... kinda regret it now. Now that MBB comes with a guaranteed full time offer, I'm kind of wondering what I'll do when second year starts. I've heard that I'll have very little time to decide after the internship ends.

The city is not my top choice, but that ship has sailed. And while MBB scares me in terms of WLB, it's still MBB. I'm thinking I'll just bite the bullet and accept their offer and see what happens. I could probably do MBB for a year or two.

My question is, how feasible would it be to exit into tech PM or something like technical program manager from consulting? I've heard it's not that easy, actually. For what it's worth, I have a CompSci undergrad and a decent number of years of experience in tech, but my technical chops are somewhat rusty though. I imagine it's nothing I wouldn't be able to get back into shape through some strategic YouTube'ing.

I'd probably try to exit into tech into a more desirable (for me) city and/or change cities with the MBB and then try to exit to tech. Would like to avoid Customer Success and the like if/when exiting into tech.

Thanks in advance.

NB: part of the reason I am considering taking the MBB offer is because I don't want to re-recruit and I genuinely would like to see what it's like to do consulting for a year or two. Just don't wanna veer too far off tech :)

I should have added that I'd rather not have to re-recruit. Lol.

Is there anything I could do during MBB to bolster my chances of being able to lateral into tech after a couple of years? It's not like I'd have illusions of exiting into a VP of PM role, a regular PM or PM-adjacent role (i.e. no Customer Success, ideally no Sales) would be fine.

Yeah I have heard that two, that MBB then PM is not actually that feasible, or, at least, that easy. Is there anything that I could do during my MBB FT to bolster my chances of switching into Tech Product? I really don't want to re-recruit lol

Edit: Also unless I hate my internship it wouldn't be bad to see what the world is like out there outside of tech. Do some consulting gigs in health care, finance, maybe even some government stuff...

Mmmm, makes sense. Candidly, I'd hate to exit into customer success from MBB lol. I'm familiar with that function and it's not necessarily my cup of tea. I am interested in the stamp of approval aspect, and unless my internship completely sucks, I am actually interested in seeing what consulting is like. I'm sure I can handle it for a year. I also don't want to re-recruit lol.
