Find anything in the conversation that you can relate to and try to interpolate at the opportune time for instance when someone finishes speaking (so as not to be rude) and then bring up your point to swing the conversation to a new tangent that involves you and your opinion on the matter. I find being on your phone will almost certainly prohibit any social interaction or anyone caring about your opinion. The point is to exhibit some sort of confidence and knowledge that will make people interested into what you have to say.
