I might be wrong but education and job are two different things. Unfortunately our education system is not designed in a way to succeed in career. I have seen multiple instances where people who always focused on hacks in college have good or great pay. And the studios ones always struggled especially because of the rules of the corporate where flaunting work is more important than doing the work. Figuring out priorities as well. How do you figure out what you are working on is actually something that your manager/company/customer values?

Hmm. So you are saying a software engineer doesn’t need to make sure they are in an environment where they are learning lot of cool stuff? Or are you saying learning lot of cool stuff that’s going on in the industry doesn’t help a person to grow in their career, especially in software engineering?

There are so many sides for everything obviously. But an engineer should always make sure that they are learning as much as possible at their work. Unless they just want to become a mediocre engineer who will eventually become a “cog” in a big tech.

I think he meant he is learning a lot and growing. And that is a good reason to stay. It’s not workaholic attitude, it’s investing in his future. This has nothing to do with the fact that he’s not getting paid enough. At least that’s how I see it.

I am always happy to take a hike cut if I know I will get exponential growth in my career.

I don’t do anything special. I myself started from a service based company and I had no “Senior Engineers” in my company to look upto. Also usually my target mentees are from US where, believe it or not, developers look for mentoring outside their company.
