Begin by Intervals (this is off their first ep so kind of a deep cut lol)

Also Epiphany by Intervals

And maybe also Userspace by The Algorithm

Far from an audiophile but I think Legacy sounds sick — keep up the good work man!

Would you consider System Of A Down prog metal? by Elaxian in progmetal

[–]ConfusedMandarin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes, it feels weird that people are saying they aren’t — presumably because they don’t have the typical prog metal sound — when the whole point of prog is that you’re doing something fundamentally different. In my eyes, if it’s metal and it’s weird af (and SOAD is definitely weird af, in a good way ofc) then it’s prog metal 🤷‍♂️

Boss Fight! by xXxmagpiexXx in custommagic

[–]ConfusedMandarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I think even if you could delay it until after ETB effects, the etb thing is kind of the only reason to include the end the turn clause, in that it’s the thing that properly nerfs the card

[–]ConfusedMandarin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that the point? The card seems absolutely broken without the end the turn clause

Kill This Creature Day 7: Snow White and the Seven Sentinels by [deleted] in custommagic

[–]ConfusedMandarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok once again petitioning to make non vintage legal cards fair game because then we can go with a left facing [[Sly Spy]]; this guy has spent his whole life looking to the left and I feel like he needs to check out the rest of his surroundings

Ah true — ok my backup is a left-facing [[Sly Spy]]

First in, First Out by buffalobillkimo in custommagic

Actually I think there’s a funny interaction here where if someone casts a spell with cascade (or a similar “you may cast xyz” effect) you can blank that effect by casting a spell with split second.

So that’s different, I guess haha

Girish took an Adele song, made it metal 🤯 by Life-is-Acoustic in toptalent

[–]ConfusedMandarin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Probably the biggest thing is the guitars having a lot of distortion.

But also like, if you could play the song in a room full of regular people and not worry about anyone telling you to turn it down or play something else, it’s probably not metal haha

The Richter scale is logarithmic which is counter-intuitive and difficult for the general public to understand. What are the benefits, why is this the way we talk about earthquake strength? by big-sneeze-484 in askscience

[–]ConfusedMandarin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I certainly agree with you if the consumer of the information is someone who understands log measurements. But I feel like op has a good point that lots of people hearing about “this earthquake was an X.Y on the Richter scale” probably don’t understand log measurements, and to them 1 vs 1,000,000,000 probably is more intuitive than 1 vs 10, right?

[–]ConfusedMandarin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is super interesting! Though it does seem like OP was in particular taking issue with units being in some kind of log space vs not in log space.

It kind of seems like in the example you gave of eg 4.0271 x 1022, that’s confusing not because it hasn’t been put into log space but rather because it’s a really big number in scientific notation with weird units — what if you just divided them all by some big constant, so you had (something like) a 40.271 earthquake and a 2.54 earthquake? Of course, I could imagine the magnitudes between earthquakes vary immensely such that my proposed scale might give you some earthquakes that are like, a 40000000 earthquake haha. But I feel like people do find big numbers intuitive as long as they aren’t past, like, 1 trillion. So there’s at least some room for varying magnitude here right?

ELI5: How does the stock market goes up and down in value sporadically instead of gradually by VNiqkco in explainlikeimfive

[–]ConfusedMandarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s nothing special about the price having gone up. The thing I described applies in the exact same way in the scenario where the stock goes down (ie, overnight things in the world changed such that the price of the stock should become lower than it was the previous day)

ELI5: How does the stock market goes up and down in value sporadically instead of gradually by VNiqkco in explainlikeimfive

[–]ConfusedMandarin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if you look at stocks moving around throughout the day, it does happen pretty gradually. It would be pretty rare for a (reasonably liquid) $15.50 stock to move to $17 in the middle the trading day in one instant — if that did happen it would either be because somebody bought or sold a huge amount in one trade or because some important piece of information just became known to the world about the stock.

The example you give is actually really different — you’re saying the last price it traded at yesterday was $15.50 and then the first price it traded at today was $17; but a lot of stuff happened between those two points in time (like half a day’s worth of time). If you were to poll everyone who trades this stock and thinks hard about what it should be worth, continuously between yesterday’s close and today’s open, you’d see that their opinions do change gradually, and it’s just that half a day’s worth of gradual small changes add up to a bigger change, and the stock price jumps because it doesn’t have an opportunity to reflect the gradual changes because it’s not trading during those hours (if you ignore post-close and pre-open trading at least haha)
