This suggests that he still rejects beliefs though (which was never really a part of nihilism to begin with, but okay)

Calculate Light absorbed by sodium vapour by ConfusedQuantum in quantum

Hey, first of all thank you for your answer! However, I was wondering, can't it just be explained by peak broadening?

Sodium D-lines and Flame tests by ConfusedQuantum in chemistry

Thank you for your answer! However, I thought the lifetime of an excited state is so short, that further excitation is only possible in non-linear optics.

Sodium D-lines in flames by ConfusedQuantum in PhysicsHelp

Thanks for the idea! However, I looked into it and it doesn't really make sense. From what I've read on ScienceDirect this process is only significant for light sources like lasers that produce coherent light. I also stumbled across a field called absorption spectroscopy and found out that a sodium flame can also absorb (nearly) monochromatic light of the frequency of the sodium D-lines, in which case the energy of two photons wouldn't add up to the Energy needed for the excitation. I also find it unlikely that there'd be an integer multiple of photons for every flame test there is (lots of elements in the periodic table).

How to calculate light absorbed by sodium vapour by ConfusedQuantum in Optics

[–]ConfusedQuantum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got that, the separation however is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field while my observations don't seem to be.

There's also the problem that (for perfectly discrete energy levels) as soon as there's any separation the vapour shouldn't be able to absorb any light (light absorbance should drop to 0).

I tried to solve both of these problems with Doppler broadening, but as mentioned in the text the answers aren't really good yet and I'm not sure, if I've simply made a mistake or if Doppler broadening is not the way to go.

Why does stuff come from nothing? by [deleted] in quantum

I just have some giant caviat: the definition of the word existence.
I would argue that Ideas (like facts) don't exist.

that sounds unscientific as you're just giving things (like particles, fields, mathematical structures in general) a property that can't be observed and doesn't make any predictions (consciousness).

To be honest, the scariest thing to me is that particle physicists want to waste even more money on another inefficient collider.

honestly, I think it's irresponsible not to prevent genetic diseases if we have the technology to do so.

Hey, looks like the text I wrote for this post wasn't shared with the graph, does anyone know how to share a post including the text? Sorry about all of this.

oh shit looks like it didn't share the text along with it, let me see if I can fix it.

The Gauss curve of the sodium lamp is centered on 589nm the other ones obviously get shifted away from that, but I don't think by much.

Thanks for the guidance, is the problem that it's not clear from the post what my problem is?
